A focus on slice of life would be a huge waste of all the fantasy elements introduced in the show, if you want your SoL so badly, go watch the EQG web series when it comes out

Slice of life and fantasy elements aren't mutually exclusive. That's like saying that a slice of life show that takes place in the future is wasting its Sci-fi elements. The show doesn't need to choose between being a down to earth slice of life or a fantastical fantasy adventure. It can have elements of both, but still be predominately SoL.

As an example, Boast Busters is a mostly slice of life episode that includes magic and ends with a giant space bear attack. Bats! is a slice of life episode where one of the characters turns into a vampire. Sleepless in Ponyville is chock full of fantasy elements. (But is arguably an adventure episode. It comes down to semantics.)

The show works best when the fantasy elements are used to highlight the characters and their reactions or set up unique scenarios, and suffers when they're used to expand the world or lore.
