I really don't get this meme. Sure, not every unicorn is a magical prodigy, but even the average Joe should be able to learn a new spell with a bit of effort. It's like the difference between a civilian, a soldier and a scientist. Why would someone with a profession in baking ever want or need to learn how to harness compacted energy for lethal purposes or start a fire with extreme heat control?

Even if I was unicorn with a talent for magic, my lazy ass would never commit to wizardry. Most I'd do is learn a dozen different spells just to fart in public without being singled out for it.

Well I'm sure there are tiers of spells that are easier or harder to learn than others, like with any subject. Aside from levitation, I'd assume illumination is the second most common - and if fantasy settings have taught me anything, those would be followed by first level elementalism. Again though, how often would a normal pony find themselves in need of a gust of wind or a spark of flame? They're anything but wilderness enthusiasts.

It seems kind of random, to be honest. Lemon, Twinkle and Colgate were all part of Celestia's school for talented unicorns and we don't really know their level of magical aptitude. Sunburst was a complete failure despite seemingly having a cutiemark leaning more towards magic. He instead incorporates this talent to study rather than practical use, similar to Moondancer.

Twilight has a talent in magic and decided to pursue it as a career so we know she has a hoof up over others, but while we know she's learned many spells, we don't know how many she's truly mastered. Trixie has a talent in it, but she stuck to flare and illusion. Glimmer is powerful but seems not to have had a higher education or quite as much variety.

I'm not saying any unicorn can just go out and learn complex spells with no prior education or training, but I'm certain getting a degree in "level 1" or "level 2" spells doesn't require excessive work. From there it's just guesswork as to what spells would go where, how easy it is to pick them up and what if any prerequisites they require.

Like the real world, each pony would have a different aptitude for it. Tens of millions of people can sing well, but professional artists are in the thousands. So while I'm sure some are hopeless, I wouldn't put it quite at the 90%+ range of magically-inept unicorns as the average pony more likely than not chooses not pursue greater prowess rather than is totally incapable.
