I accidentally watched a few mlp clips on YouTube and was instantly hooked. I was wondering from where should I start watching the show for the best experience? From the beginning or from a particular season.

Start at season 1 like everyone else, but prepare to be disappointed in seasons 3 and 6.

>>
>>30764789
just watch it from the beginning, almost every season finale/beginning there's something added to the series so you'll be unaware of a lot if you don't go in order.
>>
>>30764819
elucidate me on how season 3 is not a complete disappointment, anon. I'd like to hear your wonderful opinions.

watch it from the beginning.

If you'd know us well enough from YouTube videos, you'd know we're not the most sensible or reliable bunch.
>>
>>30764789
There are two ways you can do it. Starting from episode 1 (Called Friendship is Magic Part 1) or start by watching some of the best episodes from seasons 1+2 and then going in order afterwards (you don't want to watch anything season 3 and on wards until you watched the first two seasons as there will be major spoilers in each of them.) If you go with this method, I would recommend watching Lesson Zero, Hurricane Fluttershy, It's about time, and Sonic Rainboom First.

Most of the characters start out as likable, but you will have to be patient with the kid characters (besides Spike, the dragon) at first. Their episodes in seasons 1+2 are on average pretty weak but they do get a lot better starting in season 3. If you go with latter method, avoid watching their episodes too early on as they are not representative of the rest of the show quality wise.

The episodes are better than those in seasons 1 and 2 with the exception of Spike at Your Service and Games Ponies Play. Magical Mystery Cure is a better episode than Canterlot Wedding or Best Night Ever.

I haven't really watched much of anything. What really hooked me was the general atmosphere. MLP seems like the perfect remedy for all the depressing world news lately. That being said, my favorite pony is the one in the pic. Don't know much about the characters I'm afraid.
>>
>>30764789

From the beginning.

The first episode does a great job of introducing all the characters and the first two seasons are the best.
>>
>>30764934
>best
>not worst
The show only gets better after the first two seasons, but you still need to watch seasons one/two to be able to appreciate the others.

Bridle Gossip (S1 E09).

It was the fourth episode I watched and its still one of my favorites.

I watched the premiere because I'd seen ponies on 4chan posted for over a year and I wondered what was the deal with this meme anyway and why hasn't it died.

I found the premiere was a lot better than I was expecting; but I still hadn't gotten over the stigma of watching a little girl's cartoon. Still I liked it enough that I watched another episode a week later and the show continued to grow on me then a few days after that I watched Bridle Gossip and I was hooked.

Despite what the seeming majority of people here think, seasons 1-2 were pretty shit by comparison. If you're determined and don't mind slogging through a few seasons that aren't as good as the rest (I still love them, just not as good as the later ones), then just start from the beginning. If not, I'd recommend watching Saddle Row Review and No Second Prances. There are some parts that may not make complete sense if you haven't watched it from the beginning, but it's still pretty easy to figure out.
>>
>>30765002

Yeah, I skipped the opening and all the songs for quite a while. Now, I legitimately enjoy a lot of the songs.

S1: The Pilot, Bridle Gossip, Feeling Pinkie Keen.

S2: Return of Harmony, Lesson Zero, and It's About Time.

Those are 6 of the best episodes the show has ever done.

At this point I like all of the main 6.

Twilight in Season 1 and 2 was the best when she was still a socially awkward smart ass. She's too well adjusted now though and rarely gets the chance to be as funny as her character can be.

I tend to find Fluttershy's gags the funniest (cowardice amuses me) and her voice is like audible xanax; but her episodes generally aren't the best.

Rarity used to be my least favorite in the first few season; but out of all the characters she's improved the most and her episodes have been the most reliably good the past few seasons.

TLDR: I like them all, and I don't really know anymore.
>>
>>30765114
I know the feel, they all have their weak and strong points and are surprisingly deep, top tier waifu material that wasn't even intentional
>>
Avoid Equestria Girls.
>>
>>30765113

We seem to differ a lot on S4.

Now, I'm looking at the episode list and I did really like Castlemania, Maude Pie, Testing, Testing, 1,2,3, and Trade Ya.

Maybe I was a little harsh on S4.

I used to like Twilight but then she stopped being witty and sarcastic and I stopped caring, then I liked Pinkie Pie until the writers decided to flanderize her character into a walking meme machine. None of the other poners really caught my interest and I found myself not caring about Dash's wonderbolt episodes or Fluttershy's assertive episodes or tea parties with Discord. Applejack has pretty much always had okay episodes with none standing out as unlikable aside from somepony to watch over me. Same with Rarara except I don't care about her either.
I still like Ponka, though. Pinkie Pride renewed my faith in her. Now I tend to just ignore episodes I don't like and forget they even existed if they don't fit in with my personal views of what the show should be.

Yeah, I really miss Twilight's sarcasm.

I've actually enjoyed Glim Glam's addition to the show because she's basically S1 and S2 awkward cynical Twilight; but with more baggage. That and teaching her has actually given Twilight something interesting to do other than saving Equestria once or twice a season.

Nope, Glimmerfags such as myself can actually be this retarded. I get the problems people have with the Cutie Map episodes, but beyond that I think that starlight is actually a pretty well-portrayed character.
>>
>>30764879
The first half of Season 3 has some of the best material in the entire show. It's the second half that devolves into the mediocre to bad range. If the second half was like the first half I'd probably declare it among the best seasons in the show.

Post reformation Glimmer tries too hard to fit in, she is nothing like old Twilight who would wonder what the fuck is going on and just nope out of the room if she felt like it, any chance to turn her into an enjoyable character died with that god awful season finale where her entire personality was throw into the trash and she became balding mini Twilight with PTSD

At the end of the day the main 6 still maintained it to at the end of that one me, and even if they didn't I would argue that the next episode returned to the status quo and makes that conflict moot.

I still find her enjoyable. The episodes with her and Trixie in particular have all been pretty great.

That said, I don't disagree with you that they could have gotten much better material out of her reform if it had played out over a number of episodes instead of cramming so much of it into that lame montage at the end of her last evil episode.
>>
>>30765327
Lets see:
>Crystal Empire
Vastly Underrated two parter, having spike save the day instead of the villain losing to themselves was a nice touch.

>Too Many Pinkies
Pretty good episode

>One Bad Apple
One of the first episodes to write the CMC really well as a group, pretty good despite a shaky redemption.

>Magical Duel
Really good episode

>Sleepless in Ponyville
One of the best in the series, this episode made scootaloos character into something beyond a rainbow dash clone and helped to explain her inconsistent behavior in the prior seasons.

Second Half:

>Wonder Bolts episode:
Pretty good episode, the ending would have been stronger if she quit the wonderbolts for real.

>Apple Family Reunion
Boring, boring boring. Babs returns, but nothing interesting happens with her.

>Spikes at Your Service
I can't really hate this episode too much, its bad, but at least its bad in an entertaining way.

>Just for Sidekicks
An underrated spike episode, has spike being punished for the right reasons, pretty good episode.

>Games Ponies Play
Worst episode of the season. Everyone is an idiot and the episode is boring and predictable. This is one of the few episodes where it feels like a generic kids show.

>Mystery Cure
Another underrated episode, the songs were good, but the ascension is rushed. Not a great episode, but decent.

The second half isn't really that bad. Sure it has some boring and bad episodes, but I would say the second half is even compared to season 2.
>>
>>30765743
I consider Wonderbolts Academy to be part of the first half since it's up there in quality. Also, you forgot the one that destroys Discord as a good character.
