That said, I think there are reasons to be worried. Ratings are down on the new episodes, it's been 7 years, most of the fandom's big names have quit actively participating in the fandom or just outright disappeared, the biggest con struggled to break 6,000 people this year and apparently had a bunch of management issues.

The movie is really make-or-break. If it's Emoji Movie part II, we're dead after Season 8. If it lasts, we might get to Season 10 but I really wonder after that even with good-ish ratings because Hasbro would love to reboot the franchise and children's cartoons basically never go over 200 episodes, which would be S9E5 if all goes to plan.

Fairly Oddparents or SpongeBob went basically the same way. A show that started out great or at least okay that has gone on way too long. Spongebob pretty much died after the first movie and is unwatchable at this point and it's still only barely over 200 episodes after 18 years. They can show three episodes a day for two months and not repeat. That lets the show stay fresh without needing to pay the actors any more, which Hasbro/Discovery would LOVE.

The situation sucks, but can we really blame them? While i still love the show, iv'e come to realize that it was never the show itself driving the fandom on for so long, but the creations and content inspired by the show which made the fandom last this long. The average autist can analyze an episode down to the tiniest pixel in under a few hours, there just isn't enough to talk about to warrent endless discussion, that and the show took a hit and continues to take hits with lack of world building and the occasional fuck up. I'm hoping the movie will be good to where people want to watch the show again and discuss theories, possible future episodes and all the things we talked about in the old days. According to the "brony psychologist", the fandom has reached a stable position, although there is a decline due to more of what he considers the hipsters (essentially the people who were on board for attention back when the fandom was controversial) leaving than the genuine fans that are joining (more likely to be genuine because MLP is less controversial).

He also talked about declining show views and declining convention attendance. For show views, iirc he essentially said that we're getting to a point where being able to stream things whenever we want on places like youtube, dailymotion, itunes, etc... so that watching the episode the moment it premieres isn't a necessity. In terms of convention attendance, he said that for certain people, there's only so many different panels that you can attend or merch you can buy. He used the phrase "been there, done that".

He then later went on to say that the community is still in a position where it doesn't produce incredibly high amounts of content anymore (which he said marks the honeymoon phase), but it makes a satisfactory amount of content to keep the genuine fans interested.

Tl;Dr
According to the psychologist who studies ponies, the fandom is just trimming the fat of people who are not to into the show, and getting slowly replaced by fewer genuine fans. The con and show attendance/viewership is not indicative of fandom strength. We're making enough content to keep a stable fan interest.

That being said, it's still the biggest cartoon fandom and one of the largest fandoms in general that exist right now. I mean, look at the constant stream of art (and to a lesser extent fiction) that we're still getting.
I remember an anon saying this in a different thread, we're just not used to being a "normal" fandom. At the height of MLP's popularity we were so numerous we needed our own fucking 4chan board to be contained. That can't be said for other popular fandoms nowadays like SU.

Fair point. Once you go and soak up the convention atmosphere, get autographs and hear the VAs/writers, and buy merch, it gets a bit old the second time. People still went to Star Trek conventions for years after the show ended and before the movies started, so maybe all is not lost.

This board has only recently flatlined in activity after almost four straight years of decline (and it's too early to say if it's a concrete flatline).
Ponychan, what's meant to have been the notorious bane of this board since it's inception, and MLPchan had to merge due to such a drop in activity.
FIMfiction's stats are tailored to give a sense of continual growth (never lists the number of users that deactivate their accounts-if that's even allowed-or become near permanently inactive) and they've already made moves to bring traffic from fanfiction.net (more blue, removed RD's CM from the logo, shittier UI).
Everfree faded into obscurity after the Final Draft drama.
The YT scene has been delapidated either way more thanks to google with botting and terrible algorithms running rampant.

Is roundstable even still a thing?
EQD doesn't really have any tangible stats besides implications from setting up a patreon.
The only website that hasn't confirmed to experience decline is derpibooru, which has been flatlined almost permenantly through its existence. And even then the only chart seems to refer to images posted per day, and not the userbase.
Cons don't really tell the whole story since there's infinitely more people that simply discuss it online due to spaghetti.

But more to the point, when does it stop being a meme to you and become true? When FIM ends (HA!)? When /mlp/ becomes slower than /toy/ or /po/? When the websites all get taken down from lack of traffic? At what point do you look back and say "It's dead" if constant decline doesn't apparently mean it's dying?
