I am hearing some interest because of the movie from about 10 or so people I know that got off the ride. Whether or not that translates to becoming enough of a fan again to go to a con is to be seen.

I'm also curious, if more smaller cons close down, will that translate to more people going to Bronycon?
>>

Uh huh. Meanwhile NMND has already announced Larson, Faust, Confalone, and G. M. Berrow.

If smaller cons shrink enough that they have to shut down, then Bronycon will be shrinking as well. Probably more than enough to offset any increase.

>>
>>30721183
They've signed some deal with the BCC to be there until at least 2020.

It's a cheaper venue to rent and hotel rooms are cheaper there. I see why they moved out of NYC in the first place. NYC, Philly, and DC would all be way more expensive.

Anyone feeling like this fandom or at least this con is basically dead?

The con didn't feel too busy this year. A bunch of people were cosplaying as things completely unrelated to the show/fandom. They couldn't get any of the M6 or writers. A lot of people (me included) were really into the show in like 2012 but have fallen off the bandwagon. Main reason I went was because I finally live close enough to a con to drive and not get a hotel.

Even a lot of the big names online have quit or post so rarely that they might as well be gone.
>>
>>30721302
tryin to hide that receding hairline
>>
Bronycon should stabilize at 3-4k attendees.. a bit bigger then EFNW. This is a single show specific fandom and there's enuff to support cons 3/4 the size of furry cons. This is for as long as Hasbro puts out content.

The kid part of the fanbase is thriving and growing overseas but these are not congoers. And most of the younger crowd that would go to Bronycon with their parents will now be going to Hascon for their pony.

But there's enuff of us left to keep this an okay sized niche fandom just cos the characters are so damn cuuuuuuuuuuuute.
>>
>>30721323
You could say that if it wasn't for that dye job.
>>
Has someone here been to UK cons? How are they doing and are they worth attending at all?
>>
This was my first year at BronyCon when I normally just go to BabsCon since its closer. As much as I enjoyed myself, a big part of that was because of other anons and the people I went with. Not so much the con itself. I left many times from the con to go back to my hotel and sleep or watch TV to pass time between panels. And most of the panels I went to were the 21+ ones. Fri night was funny and Sat was meh. Gala was easily the worst part of my what I did here. Still had a decent time overall. Sucks that Ill never experience it in its prime. In 2012 i was still in highschool. Im just too late. If I had a decent time now, 2012-2014 era must have been fucking lit

Despite all the bad I said, Id be down to go again next year.

>>
>>30721356
They really should have staggered the panels so that there isn't a 30 minute gap where everyone is just sitting around.

Also, confirmed attendance at 6,319. Lowest since they moved to Baltimore, but more than 2012 FireCon.
>>
>>30721213
It's funny, he likes to pretend he cares but otherwise doesn't interact with the fandom anymore. Now he just makes music for whatever's the current flavor of the month
>>
>>30721412
This is what I worry about. A LOT of vendors are Closing soup shop.
Bronycon is nothing without vendors. It's at least 25% of the entire experience.

Even the shitty vendors add weight. If they go, the con gos.
>>
>>30721412
It's a lot of work shipping merch out there and back and then you basically have to sit in the merch hall all day.

That and again, no Mane 6 or writers, really did not help. The movie is the last best hope, although if they're planning that to be the "seven seasons and a movie" bit, game over after 2018.
>>
>>30721421
They did that so peoppe can make it to other panels shpuld the one they go to next is across the center and/or they make an early spot in line.

>>30721441
>>30721457

I think we will get S8, maybe even S9. After that, we're over 200 episodes and that's when they can run the old episodes in syndication for most of a year without basically any repeats.

Just for comparison, Spongebob has had 218 episodes. Only like the first 60 are any good and the first movie was what killed it.

The only way to save Bronycon is to save the brony fandom, and that would take levels of autism never before seen. The movie may be our final chance, it will bring a lot of attention here. We need to convince people that the show is better, or just as good as it use to be. We need more quality content, we need to encourage smaller content creators, maybe make some smaller musicians and animators horse famous by shilling them. That would be only some of the things we'd have to do. The first thing we need is a strong leader to coordinate all of this. But who? And are we autistic enough to actually do this?
>>
>>30721255
It's basically got to become a Western Animation version of Otakon.
>>
>>30721584

Yeah, it's normally reserved for franchises in multiple forms of media aimed at adults.
>>
>>30721775
I would be OK (and by OK meaning there's literally nothing else to save it) with doing this as long as Undertale, Steven Universe, and Homestuck are disallowed.
>>
>>30721804
Steven Universe would likely still be around because it's technically still relevant.

Undertale and Homestuck (especially Homestuck) are well past their limelight prime.
>>
Good (?) news is 2018 won't be the same weekend as Otakon. And le movie will hopefully do something, assuming the momentum keeps going until July.

Also worth keeping in mind that a fair amount of schools are starting tomorrow. Keeps some of the high school kids away.
>>
>>30721851
Was the turnout low this year? didn't go.
>>
>>30721692
if you're going to spend $15 on a burger, you'd be better off at shake shack
>>
>>30721890
6,319, lower than last year by about 1,000.

Could be several things. Could be that Otakon was in DC the exact same time. Could be that they had none of the Mane 6 or writers. Could be a lot of merch vendors going online only. Could be that the fandom is pretty much dead. Any number of those could change by 2018, especially with >muh movie.
>>
>>30721851
Yeah, another thing is collegefags like myself couldn't go this year because of camps (marching band for me, but sports preseason camps are occuring on my campus so none of them could go)
>>
>>30721922
>none of the Mane 6

we a european con now.
>>
Fuck, I dont want to go back to the real world
>>
If anyone here is a vendor, what do you sell and what are your expenses and profits like?
>>
>>30722013
Plush vendor here.
Booth is like $350 here, hotel adds on like $400 min, flying is ~$3-400 or if I hate myself and drive like $250 for a car rental. This isn't counting material costs for the plushes, supplies for the booth, food, the alcohol I need to deal with autists for the weekend, etc. Total con cost is like at least $1000.

Which is why the plushes are largely around $350.

If I bust my balls and make 30-40 large ones like I did last year, the profit margin is solid enough. But the stress isn't worth it for me now that I'm full time. And bcon fucked us hard this year with stupid bullshit, so probably not coming back to vendor next year.
>>
>>30722013
Not a vendor, but I spent more than I should've in vendor hall.
Typical shirts, hats, scarves, jackets, plushies, figurines, comics, posters, drawings/art
Some have mugs/glasses, bags, mousepads
A few have electronic stuff, mostly RGB LED stuff
There's a lot more, but that's the most common stuff.
>>
>>30722085
>stupid bullshit

Can you expand on that?
>>
>>30722085
>>30722099
This. Explain. Nobody knows what goes on in the vendor hall
>>
>>30722099
>>30722134
So past several years, with your booth you get union services. So some dude with a forklift will cart shit back and forth from your car when you're loading in as much as you want. This year, all you got was a handcart to load up on, and each additional trip past the first was a $60 charge. Yet they kept booth prices the same and didn't advertise this fact.

Other shit, they sent acceptance letters out a month late, causing vendors to scramble more, and then invoices a month after that. Schedule only came out a week ago, let alone the vendor map. The latter we rely on heavily to market towards people who follow us.

And then they go and put several plush artists right next to each other, or across the aisle from another. Like, when you have a starting maker next to someone who had years of experience, it kills sales hard for the newbie.

It might sound like a lot of bitching, but it's a stack of bullshit that kind of compiles
>>
I think if the con staff actually gets their shit together and doesn't set the next con as the same as another huge con, and doesn't advertise about hosting other fandoms, we'll be fine.

There needs to be more quality content though, and some more notable talent needs to come back.
>>
>>30722209
Dude that sucks. Thanks for sharing.
>>
>>30722209
What kind of shit is that?

>>30722239
I think they assumed hosting other fandoms would bring in more people. Talent is a big must. This con had a lot of filler panels like the Smash 4 pro or the Pokemon after dark. If youre going to host other fandoms, at least make it good. Also...

It was a very lovely gala. Much better than last year's where there was only like 20 minutes of ballroom dancing, and the rest of the event was stage skits and party music.

Though they held it in a smaller room, and that was kind of crap...luckily it cleared out through the night, and by 11:30 or so, it was much better.
>>
>>30721334
When the contract runs out they should consider another Baltimore-based local con. venue, there are several that are slightly smaller (4-5k attendees), better traffic location (airports and roads), cheaper and nicer/cleaner/more up-to-date with no municipal union controlling food concessions.

>>
>>30723903
There are so many hotels in Arlington, VA that it's ridiculous. I would say Crystal City would be the place to hold it if they're looking to relocate to a smaller venue with less overhead.

That or out by Dulles.
>>
>>30724002
Is he ok?
>>
>>30723971
Near the convention center, during daylight hours, yeah. Shouldn't be a problem. Outside a few neighborhoods or at night, it gets pretty damn bad.

That and there are so many people begging for money/spraying your windows/selling ICE COLD WATTAH for ONLY ONE DOLLAH with a megaphone that it gets really annoying
>>
>>30724030
Was a group of three near the cathedral close to the light rail station, wearing du-rags on their heads. one of 'em asked for a dollar, he said no, the third got up and smacked him against the left ear.

Hotel staff got ice for him and they called the police I believe.
>>
>>30724026
True, but either the Gaylord at National Harbor (which is pricey, I've planned a large event there) or MD Live by BWI would be great for a con. A casino may be thinking outside the box, but it could alleviate the pressure of having to "host" entertainment the entire time - and it and it's food are open 24/7. I've not priced Live for a large event but imagine with it's falling income it would be a better bargain - and still close enough to be considered "Baltimare" adjacent.

Thing is, BC markets as "family friendly". A casino, where they check everyone's ID for 21+ at the door, is not that.

National Harbor is an option. It's kind of hard to get to anything else in the area, though. Crystal City doesn't have that problem, because it's so close to DCA and on two Metro lines.
>>
>>30724092
You'd need to say what neighborhood.

Also, were you wearing any pony merch? Hide your power level, friendo.

"Family friendly" in downtown Baltimore and they let in Chris Chan? ;0) kek
Also, there are tons of university campuses with large facilities, the July dates would work best for those. Changing from Baltimore to Baltimore-adjacent or DC-adjacent would be a big start in improving. That said, I will go next year. If it's locked in to the Balto con center, I'll just book a suite at the Hilton.
>>
If youre even slightly buff, they tend to leave you alone.
Ziggers only take on people they're absolutely sure won't fight back.

If you walk with just the slightest bit of confidence and nod at them like you don't consider them a threat, you'll be fine.
>>
>>30724206
It just felt sketchy you know
>>
>>30724196
The only reason I come is because of the adjacent bars and attractions.
If they move, it'll be the death of any little fans whose parents want a bit more than just a pony con.
>>
>>30724206
Just nod at all the potential attackers, GOD BLESS AMERICA
>>
>>30724221
That's a valid argument. Being from the area the attractions aren't all that attractive, but that's just me. Familiarity breeds contempt - or at least boredom. Seems like they might lose some of those fans anyway, though.
>>
>>30724196
They already signed a contract until 2020 for the BCC. Thing is, no matter how bad the fandom gets up to that point, they can probably still claim to be the largest pony con in the world and scrape by. Assuming you get 3,000 people in there for $70 per person, that's still $500k, which is what I would guess a large city's convention center costs for a weekend.
>>
>>30724227
It's just good advice. Attackers want easy prey.
Have some confidence and act like you don't give a fuck.
>>
>>30724244
I would imagine Baltimore cut a slightly better deal for them, they tend to try and undercut competition on price and then tighten up the available services and food/beverage rules. Good point, though.

Were you one of the staff?

At least last year, while I was in line for the Gala (dressed up), there were at least 3 people who complained to the person who let people in "but I emailed the people in charge in advance, and they said it was ok!"

He didn't have time to deal with that shit, so he just let them in.

Also, Dominoes Pizza Anon with the Principal Celestia cutout did this too if I recall correctly.
>>
>>30724676
No, I wasn't one of the staff, or anyone of importance.

I guess my cosplay was just so sharp that he assumed I was one of the stage performers.

If they don't tell you before hand it's on the books that they can't do shit if you don't pay.
He can call the cops, but hell have to lie about the card thing and most cops know the scan too well to fall for it.
>>
>>30724649
If they don't run the meter, don't pay. Simple as that.
Consider it a free ride and be secure in the knowledge that the assholes were trying to scam you and it's karma.
>>
>>30724691
Thanks. Good to know for the future.

I was lucky that the ATM in my hotel was the bank I used, otherwise I would have been extra pissed at having to pay a $3 fee just to pay him. Plus that was like a 15 minute process.
>>
>>30724760
No, he ran the meter, just claimed his card scanner wasn't working. Hell, he might have even said he just didn't want to use it. I know they hate it because they get a percentage taken out, but I really don't give a fuck, it's their problem, not mine. When I worked at a restaurant, and someone asked for a substitution, I'd do it, not go, "Yeah, no, I don't feel like it."

What was great about it before was that we had a huge wealth of new content daily, and a fresh show to theorycraft and make up new stories to go with characters and settings.

Now we don't really have all that, and we never really will again.
>>
>>30724887
This is something more people need to figure out; The fandom isn't "dying", it's "settling". The fandom and cons were artificially large before because there was a ton of people into it just because it was something new and who have now moved on to the next fad. It's still a niche show and was never going to keep growing so this is probably going to be roughly the new status quo.

It's honestly impressive it's stayed this strong for this long even.
>>
I'm already thinking about cosplay for next year and possibly doing a panel. Gonna probably go as a Team Skull grunt for shits and giggles. As for the panel, I'm thinking of a small-scale panel basically talking about how not to be a sperg around horse famous people based on my own experiences.
>>
>>30724902
I'll say, back in 2011 when I first saw the show at age 15, I definitely didn't expect this wild ride to still be going 6 years later.

Spaghetti Strike Force 6 actually invented an entire OC named "Cumin", gave her a backstory, a blog, and even fan art JUST so that they could technically put her on a sign and not get kicked out

What a weekend that was

Capper and company went to the rave at Bronycon (drunk off their asses) and went up to the stage. There in the crowd was a child with no parents around. Capper puts the kid up on his shoulders so the kid might be able to see better. Apparently the kid was an actual missing child and this caught the attention of the people searching for him so the police came and took capper away for some questions. (All of this was being live-streamed, and everyone watched Capper get escorted away by the cops, which caused a huge thing). Capper then finds out the police are holding a british guy who had run across the stage with a union jack, because he was trying to get into a "secure room" without permission (turns out he had his bag stored in there during the rave). Capper drunkenly negotiates for British guy's release and somehow succeeds, Britfag gets sent to the airport

Capper then gets his badge taken away shortly later for causing so much havoc. He and britfag become the first people kicked out of bronycon lol

That's not a Baltimore thing. That's every big city where the cabbies don't want to pay credit card fees. Most places have made laws that they have to take credit and can't make you pay in cash, but they'll say "It's broken". You then say that you don't have any cash and thanks for the free ride, they'll usually try the card again and it "magically" works now.

Another plush vendor here. Out $1500 in expense for table fee, hotel/parking, minivan rental, and food.

The past two years I've seen a significant decrease in sales of my standard size mares. At this point they aren't worth making. Anything above a $250 price tag doesn't get sold.

Also had issues with the union workers and loading in. For the amount I pay for the table I expect to not have to carry in all of my product myself.

Honestly, its because too many people now make plushes. So you have a large competition at cons such as bronycon. There was quite a few plush vendors. Some sold out in the first day while others didnt. Its honestly probably better to just bring a few finished ones and take comissions for people. You use less tables and dont have to haul a ton of product.
>>
>>30726386
Very true. The market is over saturated. I've been at Bronycon nearly every year and have sold out of everything in the past. Now it's just a struggle to find the right market and stand out.
>>
>>30726332
Ohhh yes my sweet makeout shot
>>
>>30726311
I mean no offense to you but the market has simply shifted. There are more people making them and also good quality mass produced ones. I'm sure your $250+ plushes are great but when I can get the whole Mane 6 in a bit smaller size for the same cost as one of yours it's not a hard decision to make.

Then again Epic Rainbow Crafts sold out of his and his are overpriced. The price he had on his small ones could have bought you two at Janelle's table. I think also popularity has something to do with it. Because I would never pay the prices of epicrainbowcrafts when I can get the same thing from Blackwater or pretty much anyone else for cheaper. Also I was hanging with a vendor selling body pillows. Thats where the money is at now. Or just make luna and celestia plushies. Sperglord will pay anything for those characters.
>>
>>30726473
I don't remember that table but how did they cost? Because there is a distinct difference between overpriced and expensive. Cutie Corral is overpriced but they aren't expensive, $70-75 is still within a lot of people's impulse buy range. So even if your plushie is actually worth $250 and is not overpriced, you're still expensive enough that most people have to stop and really think about it.

Not really something you can compare.
You can either buy 6 mass produced China assembly line plushies, or you can buy 6 unique plushies made and personalized just for you
>>
>>30727217
Exactly. Im also drafting up concepts for a Daybreaker. Ill make a quick sketch

You idiot. You can ask anything.
How many mass produced Mane 6 in their Gala dress is there? How many Mane 6 in socks? How many Rainbow Dash wearing the Wonderbolts uniform?
>>
>>30727275
And for me a pair of socks or a dress isn't worth six times the price.

You need to realize that just because you put six times the effort into making it doesn't mean it's worth six times the price to someone else.

In all honesty that's not an unheard of price for lifesize plushies. They take hundreds of hours to make and cost a few hundred in materials alone. The issue is that plush was made so poorly and was too small for that price. $600 is being generous imo for it.
>>
Are all femanons whores? Did anyone meet any? How did it go?

Secret is to "lose" the ticket. They usually only charge you for the 24 hr rate as opposed to the days you spent there

No femanons but I did talk to that one qt working one of the vendor stands in the pink beret. Tried finding her after the hall closed to maybe see if she was doing anything but couldn't. I was probably too old for her anyway

Like a basic primer on international travel in general, or what? It's mostly the same as domestic travel, except you need a passport and a visa (apply for those early because govts are slow as fuck) and you have to exchange currency at a bank or else pay for everything by credit card (which exchanges it automatically).

I went on about 2k.

That's driving from Tennessee to Maryland (About $80-100 in gas).

The Hotel was around ~450, I booked it literally 3 days before the con. Parking was around 41 bucks for a 3 day garage pass from Parking Panda, and the badge was 80 bucks for 3 days.

Rest was spent on plush horses/badges/prints/ smut / food.

Me and friends were able to chain together a bunch of graduation presents (free hotel, free flights, etc) and the weekend still cost me about $1,000. But I did go a bit crazy in the vendor hall and we did a couple of dinners at $$$ restaurants.
>>
>>30731476
>Taxi from home to bus station: $30 (No Uber in Rochester)
>Greyhound from Rochester, NY to Baltimore, MD: $50
>Taxi from bus station to hotel: $25 (Did not really know of Uber at the time)
>Days Inn Hotel across the street from convention center: $115 for Thursday evening to Sunday Morning (shared with two vendors and another con-goer)
>3 Day Pass: $75 (I think, can't find the bill for it)
>Taxi to bus station: $30
>Amtrak back to Rochester, NY: $80 (would have been cheaper if I bought earlier, could have also gotten a train ticket down instead of bus)
>Picked up by friends from Rochester train station: Free cause friends are awesome. They said I looked like shit so they stopped and got me soup. The train was freezing and I didn't bring a jacket because it was fucking July so I caught a cold.
>Food: Microwave meals and Pop-Tarts brought from home. ~$10 total, but not like I purchased it for the con.

So disregarding Merch and negligable odds and ends (food on train, food at con center itself) I spent about $315 on the con itself.

>Odds and ends:I think I bought a bottle of Powerade and a small Pizza from the food place in the merch room. I'm gonna guess about $10 for that.
>Also went out one evening with the cool merch sellers I roomed with for Chinese food. $8.
>Food at Penn Station, NY: super expensive $11 sandwich and energy drink, cause it was the first thing that opened and I had been awake for about 22 hours at this point. I was not going to fall asleep in Penn Station.
>Food on train: $6 Burger with water.
>Merch: Gonna throw out a $400 number here. No idea if it's correct. A bunch of prints, autographs from Tabitha St. Germain, Andrea Libman, G.M. Barrow, and M.A. Larson, lots and lots of prints (including an Andy Price one), an Andy Price sketch, a KLP Plushies plush, a Top Plush hat, and god knows what else.

If you add all that shit in, $750, but remember, I could have gone without all this (except maybe the train food and Penn Station food).
