Generic plot does not mean it will be a generic movie, and whose to say the book didn't simplify of skip multiple parts? It was meant for 4 year olds, they aren't too concerned about paraphrasing.

If Hasbro is smart they will campaign. Even a mere nomination leads to a boost in revenue.

Since they plan on churning out MLP movies every year starting in 2020, I bet they would consider an Oscar campaign as a profitable investment in the franchise's future.

I see nominations for best original song and score. Animated feature is a toss-up.
