Earth ponies are all production/service focused. The sole exception is Bon Bon and she hauls shit carts around for the town . All the stalls in the Ponyville market are grown in the gardens of the sellers and they ALL make more money per unit than APPULZ. It's almost like AJ has flooded her own market or people are stealing the apples from the untended orchards.

It's why the Flim/Flam episode didn't make sense after they revealed so many trees are left untouched. They could have just had the machine produce the cider from the untended orchards since it checked for bad apples anyway and they'd have their 50/50 cut all year round and maintained a monopoly regardless.

See, the thing is that the farm is a massive time sink and probably has a lot of overhead to keep all the buildings and equipment maintained, that's not including any seed, feed, and fertilizer they might have to buy and if there are taxes for the land.

Meanwhile Rarity just has to buy fabric and dig up gems and she has all the materials she needs to make her clothes, and you can be sure that she's selling them at a massive fucking profit even including the labor.

Farms have huge overhead costs, meanwhile with high fashion you can get everything you need for less than a tenth the cost you're selling it for.

Not only that, she has better advertising. Sure, the apple products from Sweet Apple Acres might be the best in Equestria, but if someone's wearing a specialty made outfit you think looks fabulous on them and you're into fashion then you're going to ask who made it. In that regard once she has an initial pool of clientele buying from her her customer base can do all of her advertising for her.

You ever wonder why it seems like the farm stays the same whereas Rarity's fashion empire keeps expanding? That's just how these things work.
