Throughout much of life you secretly had little faith in the church or God. Life felt too cold, too pointless and cruel to matter and you spent your days wandering from village to village finding work where you could and spending your meager pay on drink and whores.

Bleary eyed and aching you awoke in the muddy street, a cold steady drizzle like thin needles piercing your body and your warmth long drained. You tilted your head and wretched the sour contents of your stomach into the shallow pool next to you, hoping a man could die from sheer will alone.

Hours passed, though you felt you could crawl to shelter if you wanted, your spirit was far gone and you were determined this would finally be the time you could escape from this world. Passersby shot you disgusted looks or ignored you entirely both barely registered in your state. Eyes closed and with no peace to make you awaited your departure.

You feel warm. You find yourself in a bed stripped of your few possessions, and hear the patterning of rain on the tent above you. Panic sets in for a brief moment before a kind, sad looking older man with a dropping face comes and introduces himself as Gerard a knight of the order of St John on the path with his brothers to the holy land. Gerard hands you a bowl of stew. "Child, your spirit weeps, allow me to hear your troubles so I may help."

You slowly tell him the brief tale of your life, confessing the loneliness and despair bottled up within you for so long until it comes pouring out, tears silently streaming down your face. The man simply takes it in, letting you vent your sorrows and listening intently, empathy plain on his wrinkled face.

Once you've finished and composed yourself he nods and tells of their mission. He tells you of Christ's sacrifice for makind, of the opportunity of redemption in the eyes of the Lord that no sinner is barred from and of the Seven Virtues: prudence, justice, temperance, courage, hope, charity and above all faith.

For the first time in your life you feel touched by God's presence and the spirit inside you so long broken, began to heal. For months on end you and your newfound family marched farther east stopping to recruit new brothers to the cause, spread the good word and eradicate apostates who refused salvation. This latter duty would weigh heavy on your mind, so many people left unsaved and so many of those you'd come to know and care for lost in battle.

One night as you patrolled camp, your mind grew distracted. You and several others had been ordered ahead from the main camp to watch for ambushes in the night

Once you catch your breath you look around and find yourself on top of a small hill beneath an apple tree. The air is cool, birds sing and a deep sense of calm pervades the area. Your armor and your sword is gone, leaving you only with your cross embossed white cloak, trousers, shirt and the simple wooden necklace gifted to you so long ago. "Is this Heaven? Where... Where is everyone?" You look around but only see wilderness. You begin shouting "John! Luke? Elijah? Hello?" the only reply your echo across the valley. Concern creeps it's way into your heart. Is this empty land your Purgatory? It's much nicer than the sun blasted desert of the holy land but the fear of eternal separation from those you lost and the absence of God's grace fills you with dread. You have to keep going. Find answers. Find your redemption.


First time writing for the board. Thoughts? Suggestions? Is it shit? If so is it salvageable?

Okay, I finally got around to reading this. Sorry for being late.

Overall, it's nice. It's easy to read, your grammar is just fine, there's nothing pretentious about your writing.

The only problem I see is a lack of priority. As a rule of thumb, more important details should get more attention from you as a writer. You gave a nice description our protagonist meeting with Gerard, but you give us one line of him turning to God. This is THE moment right now. This is supposedly the thing that sets our main character on the path from a lukewarm Christian to full on DEUS VULT crusader. You say that the main character felt the presence of God, but give little description beyond that. Why the turn around? You said he lacked faith in the beginning, but the most important of the seven virtues is faith. Did he change his mind about the importance of faith? Is he attracted to the nobility in the seven virtues? Does he find appeal in putting his life to a higher purpose? Does he see this as a chance to have camaraderie? Has he done something he desperately needs forgiveness for? Did God literally part the clouds before him and shout his name? Feeling touched by God's presence is a vague statement. It needs some elaboration, because otherwise, I'm left unconvinced when you say that our main character feels dread from the idea of being separated from God. You also glossed over several months. You could have dropped some tidbits about how our protagonist grew from his initial state to his current state.

What you have is good, it just needs a slight shift in focus when it comes to detail. Honestly, it's a lot better than most of what gets posted here in terms of coherence and readability. So, keep it up.

I appreciate it. I was worried it was already dragging on too long for an intro so I ended up rushing through a few things. I'll try to keep from doing that in the future. The trouble is now I'm a little uncertain exactly how it should go from here and what the overall tone should be. I'll go back, try to rework it and see if I can make it into something worthwhile without being too dry.
