I think the show has stayed about the same quality since season 2, it just changed what flaws it had. In the early seasons, you had a bunch of passionate writers that stuck with the show and were fueled by passionate fans. However, the actual episodes were seemingly randomly pitched and chosen and there was no real direction for the show. Later on, after the good writers started dropping like flies, the show seemed to get more direction to it where continuity was amplified. Hell, in season 7 almost every premise seems carefully selected to promote character development and continuity. But nowadays there's no good writers to compliment the new found direction so a lot of it ends up bland and uninteresting.

Was just talking general trends. Joanna/Kristine and Nick Confalone despite being great writers aren't enough to make the show rise above the early seasons. In the early seasons, most of the lesser writers like Charlette Fullerton and Cindy Morrow still provided good episodes. Combined with Larson, McCarthy, and Amy that's 5 dependable writers. Other writers like Corey Powell and Natasha Levinger, despite being shit most of the time had good one hit wonders.

If you like the CMC, then very much so as they have had the best episodes since season 4. If you don't, then its debatable; spike and fluttershy improve by quite a bit and the writers improved pinkie pies comedy but Applejack, Rarara, and Rainbow Dash become obnoxiously bad.
