Has anyone here played this? I'm thinking of grabbing it, maybe starting a game. Is it worth it? Any reason I would play it over dnd?

I haven't played it, but I've heard that the system works. Whether or not it's worth it, and worth it over dnd, I suppose would depend on how much your group likes horse.

It's definitely on the simpler end, but it's much, MUCH better suited for a pony themed campaign than D&D is.
Where the game shines is it's unique cooperation and teamwork mechanics setting it apart and emphasizing Friendship, and the simplicity making it excellent as a "babby's first" tabletop for younger siblings or ultra-casuals.

that's how he see's himself, as the DM of the US but there are no PC's in his campaign

Nope

It's a simpler game, but that's honestly not a drawback given it's targeted audience. And it has plenty of room for someone to houserule expand the fuck out of it.

I recently had the best session I've ever run using this game.
The story was about the ponies who still followed Nightmare Moon trying to free their princess by building a machine called the 'Claw of Night'. It is an immense grappling hook that can grapple the moon and bring it down on Equestria. Also they were going kill Princess Celestia by smashing her between two planets.

It's fun. Simpler than 5e D&D, can certainly have pony-related fun and shenanigans, or run it straight laced and serious. The mechanics are simple and are a decent intro into RPGs. Good for running with a group of friends when you want to pretend to be ponies.
