Unless it's spontaneous and done within a few hours or days, I can say from second/first-hand experience that trying to co-ordinate a dozen loosely-affiliated a-filly-ated people can wear on your own motivation, especially when said people don't deliver.

That first link was the one I was thinking of, I contributed to that one but it took so long to get finished that I lost track of its status.

I feel like something like that would be doable for someone even if they aren't particularly creative, since it's primarily learning the tool, yeah? Pitch correcting might take a little musical knowledge, but not nearly as much creative effort as writing a song yourself. Just trying to think of things that wouldn't require synthesis so much as practice.

Hey OP here someone told me it'd be better to do a more open invite in the thread so here we go : I've been looking for a second editor to help out with the parody series we got going on essentially to help our editor niw since the editing style he uses takes a long time for one person to finish . I've tried to do it twice before but both times it fell apart because flash doesn't work well with the dialogue/saving system i was trying to code myself.

However I'm working with a full coder whos built the engine in unity (and works professionally in that), so I don't have to worry about that aspect and can focus on the game.

If some of you guys recall, i was translating my Free Pen and Paper RPG based on MLP and now is done.
So yeah Seeds of Harmony is now also available in english with reduced ruleset, but here is the twist:

Whats the best 3D ponies atm? SFM or something else? im looking for some pose-able 3d ponies I can animate (preferable pretty close to show style), then convert to pixel art I can use as a base for drawing walk/attack/idle animations. Im making sub 32 px ponies so im going to draw everything by hand anyway, I just want something to help with the perspective and ratios of the bodies.

We could have used some composers which worked in folk+pop. All we had was shitty dramatic orchestras with 5 second loops, dubstep, rap+pop+electronica+eurobeat, pop remixes, modern remixes, parody songs, but absolutely nothing genuine and innocent. Nobody tried to make a little girls nursery rhyme song like Giggle at the Ghosties which uses folk themes.

We also had some 8-bit, 16-bit and metal+rock covers. But no quality covers for the song in Show Stoppers which had some amazing bits (without the voice).

Working on a christmas animation that I should have finished on christmas.

Well I can carry some higher speed films and/or just push the ones I put into the camera. My goal is to shoot some Terry Richardson-esque photos of people on the vendor floor with a speedlight against one of the back walls and not really bother with panel photography this time around because no press access to shoot the cool dude pics. Regarding the strange composition I'm sure that as long as I say the style needs to stay consistent to the set they'll agree to doing so. After all, one of the elements to making a great cosplay is hoping that somebody will notice and ask for a photo, right?

But again I'll still probably end up taking my digital cam in a backpack just in case. Won't really stay consistent to the character I'm going as but oh well.

My game uses both d20 and d100 system.

d20 is usually for combat or for a direct counter checks against something, who works always in the same way:
you roll d20 + modifier vs d20 + opponent's modifier -> who rolls higher wins.
Some advanced stuff allows also to obtain different results if you obtain a result 5 or 10 points higher

d100 is used for skills and critical hit chance.
Base skill check is 50% + modifiers, so for example you want to jump, and your Jump Modifier is +10%, you need to roll a 60 or less on a d100.
Obtaining a very lower result (IE: 15 or less) grants a Remarcable Success, that means that you usually do the action with a plus, but not an extreme plus.

Let's say you roll Knowledge (Herbalism) for identify some strange plants you find and you obtain 10 on the d100.
In this case you succesfully identify the plants, plus the GM can give you some additional info, such as "the plants can be used to do stuff X" or "even if the plant is poisonous, if assumed in small quantities after a specific treatment, is often used as anesthetic".

There is no class system, but you can customize your character with feats.
Instead of Classes you have a more generic "Career" based on something, for example Combat (Strenght) or Stealth or Arcane. The Type of career determines the cost of feats your character can aquire during time and also to have access to some feats only available for your career.

So the Career Name is not important per sé, is used to know what your character do for living, for example:
You create an Earth Pony based on Combat (Resistance) Career, and your friend a Griffin based on Stealth Career.
Both of you can call your Career as "Adventurer" since both still makes sense. The Earth Pony is an Adventurer used to fight, while the Griffin is an adventurer who uses a different approach.

Available Races are:
Donkey, Earth Pony, Minotaur, Mule, Night Pegasi (Bat Pony), Pegasi, Unicorn and Zebra

I'm thinking along the lines of emphasising other beats/off-beats and having the first bass kick of some bars come an eighth or sixteenth note before the actual beat. That sort of thing.

hey faggots, so I just posted a private alpha for my game, Within the Hinterland. If you want to try it out and give me some feedback, watch the halfassed video I made below where I explain the controls and generally what to do in the game. The download link can be found in the description. The game is missing key components like sound, tutorial and some basic effects but I'm just looking to test out the main mechanics of the game. When you play the same game, going on about 8 months now, you have a tendency to get good at it. I'm just simply testing if stuff like the day cycle is fast/slow enought or general difficutly of the game.

I'll post my comment here because the form's annoying.

First of all it's pretty solid for an alpha, it hasn't crashed and isn't completely buggy so far.
The main bug I have is the aim doesn't always follow my mouse if the window isn't centered just right, so it's pretty hard to aim, picrelated. But I'm running it on Wine, so maybe that's on me.

Another small bug, on the credit screen it says press B to go back but that doesn't actually do anything so I had to restart.

Positive points: It's something original, the art style is pretty unique, it looks interesting.
Negative points: What is even the goal, what's going to keep the player invested, what kind of game is this going to be?
Am I supposed to try to explore deep into the forest nomadic style, or are there buildings I can unlock and a town to build, maybe artifacts to find, stuff to craft, is there any of this, any sense of progression at all?
It looks like the only thing to do is destroy the turrets and defend the campfire, that's going to be fun for 5 minutes and then I'll get bored, because if there isn't anything else to see then I've basically completed the game.

Obviously this is an alpha, so I didn't expect any of this to be finished, but if that's the core mechanics of the game you're going to need something more to make it interesting.

People like to see numbers go up. That's why thousands of people spend hours collecting imaginary internet points on stack overflow and a thousand hours grinding in RPGs.
Give me a goal and a way to measure my success, that's the core of your game, everything else is secondary.

Overall I'll give you a solid 7.5/10, it looks like you actually are capable of finishing something (which is rare enough), and what you have so far is promising.

A bit late but I suppose I can still check in.

I got hired for IT before I graduated and am in training to be an IT manager by the time I graduate in Spring 2018.

That said I've have no time for content really since I'm still in school also. It's kinda depressing. But shit happens.

Well, both, at day 13 i made an balista and catapult, the problem i noticed is the dps itself

(Just gonna call them t1/t2/t3, in order that they show up)
t1 does pure damage, no effects, but has absurd fire rate; t2 has knockback average fire rate and t3 doesnt yet have the AoE so cant really compare it, but is slow to reload

What i d suggest for you to do is make a chart of their dps, first and foremost, then lower the attack speed or even its direct damage accordingly with its special effects and cost
Id say something that costs 200 should be at least 2 or 3 times as strong as something that costs 50, counting with the AoE damage, else i can just spam the cheaper one and be fine

Also in the form i said that the monster spawner despawns, they dont, it just disappears from the map, i was idle in the game already when doing the form and saw one change places so thought it had dispawned, my bad

Okay first of
I really like it and urge you to continue working on it
The art and the gameplay/idea are its strong points

As for negative feedback here is what comes to mind:
The cursor and the green line don't match - thats irritating.
There is a bug where you die on day one with full life without any real reason. my guess it is due to large amounts of not killed monsters on the map
The crossbow needs a cooldown. The way it is now I can fire it like a gatling or a laser beam.
There is a big issue with building and harvesting controls. When select something to build you can't harvest wood anymore until you reselect a few times or move far away from the green zone. Use some other key to build like "E" or something.

I played until day 6 or 7 not building anything. Just kiting monsters and dashing around, whacking trees to stack arrows so I could do a drive by on a base and kill it in one go with my gatling.
The instant walls you can walk through make it easy to delay the enemies if needed.
This in addition to the right click issue led me to some thoughts about the general game design.

For starters I like the idea of the fences. Arrows pass but creatures don't. But having your ponywalk through them is a little weird. You can basically wall yourself in and buy as much time as you want. How about making the pony unable to walk through but able to dash/jump over it.
If confirming the building is moved from right mouse to a different key you could use the right mouse for lumberjacking and for repairing and upgrading structures. fence -> wall, turret -> balista

the next part is my general ideas that came to mind regarding gameplay
If you think of it in terms of offense (hunting), defense (and luring the enemies into traps) and economy (tree=wood and obstacles that slow enemies down) I think of the possibility to go back to the base to heal up or upgrade.

Making steady progress on the new Everfree Outpost engine.

Since the previous thread, I got the new client-side prediction (a.k.a. lag compensation) code mostly working. The old system was pretty complicated and only worked for character movements, while the new one is simpler and should be easy to extend to support additional types of actions, such as placing structures and moving items around.

I also implemented a new format for describing game data, such as item and structure types. This should make it easier to add content later on, and it removes the long-standing annoyance of having server-side scripts for items and such in an entirely separate directory from the main item description. Switching to the new format introduced a few new bugs, but I managed to fix most of those today (pic related).

The next step is to set up scripting on the new engine, at which point it will finally be more-or-less playable.

Fixed the aiming issue. It's still not perfect, but mcuh better then before.

Wasn't easy either. Is there a better way to do it? probably but I don't feel like dealing with more scripts or extenstions. Just a lot of math trial and error. It's mess af, the kind of code only the programmer could love.

This is the code for the aiming fix, bx and by are variables representing an invisible box that moves around the player according to mouse position on the GUI. It gives the crossbow something to aim at...

I'm not entirely clear on what you're doing, but it sounds like you want to find the 3D point on the ground plane whose projection is closest to the mouse? (Or possibly on a plane above the ground, depending on how exactly that green line is supposed to work.) If that's right, you should look up "mouse picking" / "ray casting". This is a common problem so I'm sure somebody's posted GM:S code for it somewhere. It may not do exactly what you want, but it should at least contain some code for turning mouse X,Y coordinates into a ray in 3D space, which you can then intersect with the plane yourself.

well if your looking to do it without any kind of pre-made physics engine, the way I usually go about it is setting a variable for horizontal speed (I'll just use hs). have the player's x position += the hs. Have hs exponentially go down (so *= 0.95 or something under 1) then you can just make the hs value positive or negitive based on which way you want the player to be knocked back.

This meathod isn't perfect, but its a start

I've typically seen weapons being basically inspired by the design of the ponies, if that makes sense? Like, things with handles were designed with the hand in mind, as well as the way the arm bends. No pony would use a hammer, at least not in the way it's shaped in human world. They'd have some sort of heavy implement they could attach to their hoof for blunt attacks, or maybe something that makes use of the accordion-like motion of the limb like a spring set to help propel the blow. Just saying, don't try to shoehorn in weapon tropes when you could be adapting them to ponies instead.

Unicorns get a free pass on using most weapons, they can just magic in the appropriate force (though for RPGs I imagine that'd be a rarity, since if you're casting magic already, using that magic offensively would be easier than channeling it into a physical weapon).

I remember i had an interesting discussion some months ago about ponies wielding weapons and the conclusion is that, except for Unicorns that can use magic and griffins who have some rudimentary hands, the other races are limited to not use weapons, since it would be very impractical. Every time you see ponies holding stuff in their hooves is wrong, since they can't really hold it and impress a required force to do something and while it has been established that they can held items inside their teeth without provoking damages (for example hammering) you can see in the picture related i drew for the same discussion that using a weapon is very impractical.

As you can see in 1,2 and 3, a pony helds a weapon and still have a certain view angle, but still, duoing a swing will turn his view angle to the point that he will not be able to see his opponent, if misses or his attack get's dodged.

4 Shows that a pony helding a weapon is vulnerable on the opposite side and still needs to try to intercept the opponent's swing. this also means that he must end the combat quickly or it will be dazed by all those head-swinging.

Yeah, it should just be a single matrix multiply in the end. The hard part is figuring out which matrix to multiply by. If you can get your camera matrix, or your camera position + direction + FOV, you could try using an OpenGL raycasting tutorial, which will definitely include directions for computing the right matrix.

I've tried doing the maths for it but realised that I don't know quite enough about how to do it, nor have the competency to do it properly.
All I've done is work out the x,y co-ordinates from a rectangle to a trapezium (top corners stretch to the sides).

x_w = ((y_s / y_0)*(b / a - 1) + 1)*(x_s - (x_0 / 2)) + (x_0 / 2)

x_w is x co-ordinate in-world, x_s and y_s are co-ordinates on-screen, x_0 and y_0 are screen size and b/a is ratio between top and bottom of what's viewable in the world.
I realise this isn't enough nor complete enough to help you: all I know is that the projection can likely be condensed down to two lines with no if-else statements.

To answer you properly. It depends on what sort of platformer you are shooting for and what programming languages you know.

If you know C#, JavaScript or F then Unity
If you know C++ then Unreal

If you are trying for something like banjo kazoo, mario, spyro or crash bandicoot Unity

Something more parkour like and realistic to some graphical degree with multi hyper lighting volumetrics, Unreal.

What is easier to learn? Neither are difficult as each have extensive tutorials which walk though a huge majoriy of it. Each also have extensive libaries which Unity has its own store and Unreal was made for unreal tournament so assets there to get started, but if you are shooting for MLP which you are, then you need to create your own assets.

Unity probably the tool you would want, you also would need a 3d artist and tool like blender (free) or 3ds max. For soft bodies (ponies and other life) you need a rigger, and animator. Someone who can unwrap and texture. IF you can do all this, heck awesome.

Then you need a story writer, musicician, sfx, and vfx, UI graphic designer and UX. Programmer, and Creative Director to make sure you don't have inconsistencies. IE: Skyrim like graphics in a cartoonish world.

2d is easier than 3d because there not a whole lot a single person can't do to pull it off, 3d though brings in a new dimension and means you have to be more creative. All and All you have 4 departments you need to fill, even it if it's yourself. Design, Programing, Art (2d or 3d or both) and Sound.

What is the poly count, preferably in Quads?

When it comes to models it is best practice to avoid triangles at all costs, though some cases it is allowed. For games you want to avoid triangles and any n-gons as Unity will automatically try to divide your models on import and this can also make things look wonky if you have a triangle as it will try to subdivide and might clash with the pre-existing division of that one triangle.

For characters, depending on the character, you want to keep things simple and as low as possible. Platformers tend to have a more cartoon style so you can get away with cutting polys. More realism you have the more polys you might add but that is also why you have normal maps as well.

I can easily get away with 3k to 5k polys for a pony and make it look good. More detail I can shoot for about 11k to 15k on a high poly model. Anything more and you just nuts.

I can even cut it down to a few hundred but I wouldn't doubt about a couple thousand just due to the edge-loops especially if you wish to ad any facial details. Mouth alone probably would run about 48 polys with eyes about 54 polys per eye. All and all, allot of polys in the face.

I am looking for something a bit more than ps1 graphics with those numbers. You can get away with allot cutting polys but modern standards would be 3 edge loops around the mouth and 2 to 3 around the eyes and how ever many to make the head.

Don't forget the most important loops around the chest, knees and back if you want to animate it correctly. A pony is a quadruped by the concept is the same. Point is, you might have work to do.

I didn't understand your "stuff like that", because it isn't any kind of "stuff", the scene may look lewd, but it's more the out of context factor than "real lewdness", and there are plenty of scenes in the show that may look lewd too.

Had a look at it in Audacity and... the whole thing looks well-balanced.

The only piece of criticism I can level at it is on its uniformity (although this may be deliberate): you haven't put in any drum rolls or (noticeably) different sections in.
That said, it does work well for game music, given how well it loops.

cleaned up the animation bit
basically it's a tossup between shading which makes it more accurate to the original and can convey some depth, or completely flat which is more show accurate but might look could look weird at some angles. It's easy enough to change and re-render, I might just need to see more shots before figuring out which would look better overall
