Oh shit, glad I've stumbled upon this thread, then. I'm one of the timelapse anons from pixelcanvas threads. I cannot exactly prove you wrong, but I've made a VP9 webm of the canvas once that had a significantly smaller size than the gif at no loss of quality (!) whatsoever. It seemed specific to the VP9 codec, though, and I haven't been very curious to replicate that, because 4chan doesn't even support VP9 yet.

For interest, if someone uses Chrome/Opera/anything related on a phone and instead of the videos you only see black boxes in the thumbnail view (ie, in the search results page), open about:flags, look for "User interaction required for media playback" and click Disable. Obviously it means that /any web/ will be able to play video, but in case someone was wondering how to fix the black boxes thing, there, fixed.

For the record, the downtime yesterday had to do with me fucking up the server config a few weeks ago, and was not in itself related to the deployment of the WebM upload feature. (The bug was that the asset files that Rails generates were not being copied to the CDN's storage, which I have fixed now.)
