Creative flags are harder to mass produce. In the past, if you wanted a flag, you had to have someone stitch it together over the course of several weeks. This allowed you get a little crazy with the designs, since it was taking so long anyway. With the improvement of technology, it became easier to create flags, but more difficult to put specific details on them, hence why most flags were simplified around the eighteen hundreds.
Though, France is a special case, since they intentionally dumbed down their flag to sever their historical ties to the elite after their revolution.

I gave it a shot myself and couldn't get any better than what you have. I think the problem is inherent with what you're trying to do. The black and white lines are only a single pixel apart and that's already a lot of contrast. No color is going to be visible on both easily at that size. And at this scale antialiasing isn't going to help, but rather further reduce visibility like in pic related. You might be able to get further if you changed the black to a very light color with minimal contrast, but I'm not sure how much luck you'd have without making it bigger.

I stayed up all night to finish this on time for the chovinist holiday of the 'muricans.
Here is it: the plan of PixelCanvas /mlp/ workspace, updated with mostly every template and suggestion made in the last weeks.

As you can see, there's enough work for MONTHS (and, even now, there are still important artworks to be decided and templates to be done), so you know that the ride efectively won't end soon.

The distance between South Rarity portrait and the middle row is mostly the same as the distance between the northern row and the middle one.

My idea there was to expand from the South Rarity to avoid the extra work of moving her, and also to annex all the free space between the middle row and the European border, which could be useful for further building of murals.

About NMM and DB, the free space is very limited so, unless the model is scaled down to size the space, it has to be a little closer than we expect. The lazurs are comming, through!
