Hey, writefag from another thread here. I have a story running and I'm planning to introduce a batpony character to it in the future. I know there are a few different headcannons about batponies, but I've come up with a new one I'd like to use, and I thought I'd post it here to get some early feedback, you batponyfags being the authoritative fags on batponies. Maybe this has even been done before; I don't know. Please clue me in if so.

The concept can be succinctly summarized as: "On the Cusp of Victory, Lolth Turned Good."

(Lolth, in several D&D settings, is the chief deity of the dark elves (aka drow), who live underground and detest their surface-dwelling cousins, whom they seek to conquer/enslave/destroy)


When Nightmare Moon defied the natural order of day and night, she didn't do it alone. She had a number of followers among the three kinds of ponies, who adopted her dark banner. After the fight, when Celestia banished NMM to the moon, she gave these followers the option to repent and rejoin ponykind, but some, maybe even all of them, turned her down and followed their goddess to the moon. Once there, NMM, almost completely spent from the struggle, expended what remained of her power to erase the differences between her followers (pegasus, unicorn, and earth-pony) by "elevating" them all to bat form. She also gave them a final command to prepare for the prophesied day when they would return to cover Equestria in darkness, before falling into torpor.

Shortly thereafter, the followers soon began to organize themselves into castes according to function -- farmer, warrior, priest, spy, etc. -- and, not long after, being followers of an evil and destructive force, factionalized into clans or houses, fighting amongst themselves even as they struggled to survive in the harsh environment.

During the thousand years, batpony scholars and mages managed to open limited portals back to Equestria, and sent spies to keep tabs upon the hated cousins who had banished them. And eventually, the multiplicity of feuding families collapsed into three Great Houses, each advocating slightly different positions about how best to serve their dark goddess. Of course, despite the outward appearance of unity, each Great House was rife with subfactional splits as well. Like the dark elves of D&D, outwardly these Great Houses professed to work together in the service of Nightmare Moon, and did certainly mingle blood in marriage, but in the moonscape's long shadows they waged all manner of secret wars against each other.

When the prophesied day of return came, the Great Houses did, for a brief moment, unite behind their leader and make ready to conquer Equestria in her wake. But the sudden and completely unexpected conversion of their dark leader back to the side of light rocked their society to the core. That Celestia was willing to allow them to return as well was even more shocking.

Now, though some batponies still dwell on the moon in its completely upset order, many have cautiously returned to Equestria, founding the settlement of Hollow Shades. What's more, Princess Luna has taken personal responsibility for their fate, and strives to reform their society even as she struggles to understand the modern world herself.
