Okay, that was kinda rad.
I feel like there was a lot of exposition, but I'm assuming the comics are basically set up AS the movie's exposition, so I'm not too shocked.

Pretty enjoyable. The Storm King strikes me as a funny bad guy, which is something we've not really had in MLP before. Usually they're all business, all the time. Well with the obvious exception of Discord but given he's been reformed it's hard to think of him as the time's he's been a villain.

His motivations are little better than Tirek's in that it's clear he only seeks money to fuel his conquest, his conquest to fuel his magic artifact collection, and his collection for control. He's a tyrant who wants power for power's sake, which isn't very deep, though if they are playing off of this 'I never had a friend' angle it's clear they're setting up it could be he may only seek adoration / acknowledgement with his control. But, I hanker it more it being just plain Tirek-tier greed and Tempest will be the real redeemable in the movie. I find it hard to believe him a threat to Equestria off of this unless he has some serious convenient magic bullshit in his gallery, but even then Alicorn magic shouldn't be something easily snuffed out by that.

The plot itself was pretty good, I liked the story of an every day conquest and Strife's betrayal giving reason for Storm King to not want anyone close, though the one thing on SK that i'm unsure of is if they are getting the brutal/cutesy balance here right. It's not like Ratigan from Mouse Detective or Aku from Samurai Jack where the sheer delight/joy in evil goes hand in hand with his actions themselves, here it's like they throw a switch from him being an irredeemable asshole to a fun-loving, sensitive boss. It's jarring when they do it a bit but maybe they'll nail the balance better in the movie proper. Point being if he is a comedic bad guy, that'd be a nice change of pace, though his motivations are a bit lacking.

That was really more a review of Storm King than the comic itself but who's kidding themselves when they say they weren't reading this comic just to see the movie villain at last?

I get the feeling that he's going to be a mix of threatening and comedic at the start of the movie, but he'll amp up the threat level as the film progresses.

I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. The way he loots a city for everything it has like it's no big deal, and when the king begs to know why, he just casually says "you were next on the list". Very different from our previous villains.

Whoa.
So this villain isn't just a massive magic user who wants to take over the world.
This guy, has no magic but wants to take control of the world with wealth. This is very genious from IDW/Hasbro.
It is weird that having such name as Storm King and not controlling the storm or weather, well, makes it odd to me; I was expecting that.
But this villain has material, he is not edgy and he has his own sense of comedy, just like Discord.
I am hyped for the first mlp movie ever now.

- Storm King might be very interesting character, if this will follow up to the movie.
- SK gives kind of "a father to his men" mixed with machiavellianism and pragmatic in conequeric the cities. All of that, while trying to keep the good mood.
- I get it, that he might be the antithesis of "friendship is magic". I wonder if this will be somewhat pursued.

Why is it that I think that the movie and comic interpretations will be miles apart?

Their version of Bug Bitch and Storm Ape have both a smarmy, practical type of personality in my first impression. The show's version of Chrysalis was different in personality from the comics. It might just be the only type of villain that they can write. I wouldn't put it past IDW.

Overall? 4/10, and those 4 points are running solely on Stormy hamming it up in every scene he's in.

Well, that cinches it in my mind.

The storm king is going to be starscreamed by strife, and strife will be the big bad of the movie.
The storm king is going to get "eviler than thou'd" by Strife, and end up resuced by the ponies, and realize that Friends are a Strength, not a weakness.

At the same time, Strife is going to play both sides against each other and have a much more evil omnicidal goal than the storm king's big fun attitude.

It was at this page that the name "Toto" popped into my head, and I realised just how emphatically not-in-Equestria this comic really is.

I mean, come on, that's a epic double-page spread of steampunk airships, lightening, parrot pirates, and generally a large amount of blue-and-black with nary a shade of pink in sight - this is no way has MLP written anywhere on it and I'm genuinely uncertain how to feel about that.
