While I agree it definitely feels like they were testing the waters for a series or more specials, I much prefer the yearly movie format. That's one of the main reasons EQG has better continuity and character development than the main series (yeah i said it). Since with each new movie they build on the events of the past movies. They don't need to worry about the writer overlap and the "major events not being recognized until next season" thing that constantly happens in the main series due to the freelance nature of the writers. This wasn't a problem in these three shorts, since that's all the EQG team worked on all year so they all had continuity, but I would've preferred a full movie based on the "rogue magic" thing.

But no matter what you can't argue that their outfits aren't sexy as hell.

What I don't get is why they fucked things up with the third one. The third one should have tried to have been a big climax that ties everything together to establish WHY them having magic is a good thing (Such as a threat that they can only defeat with magic) and establish an ongoing threat that only THEY can fight, with their magic.
Like in sailor moon, how you have a starter villain show up in the first episode that the character must transform into and defeat, setting the stage for a greater evil. Sunset even LAYS THIS OUT at the start of mirror magic with her wondering why they have magic and being worried about magical threats and uneasy about things--- Dialogue that 100% sets up what should be a starter villain situation of a magical threat showing up to justify the mane seven's magical existence and answer her questions (Your magic is neccessary and you have them because of this issue and because you can control magic. The reason you were feeling uneasy is because there IS a threat that only YOU can stop.)
instead, it threw all that out the window for a Glimmer saves the day shill fest. Like, the fuck? If you're trying to launch a series, a series WITHOUT FUCKING GLIMMER, why the hell are you literally sacrificing your series to shill glimmer?

The world has been so underdeveloped. Despite jokes we really don't know too much about the world beyond two high schools and a summer camp, and even that is iffy. There hasn't been much content with the series, sure, but the world could have still been far far more developed in that time. This would be a big leap in making the world more relatable, meaningful, and more interesting.

Magic is mysterious, poorly explained, and shallow to be used as a story element. The initial idea of magic changing an ordinary world pretty much went out the window when we saw that not much changed with it, so all it is being used for is a crutch for shoehorning a fantastical conflict without much effort. The superpowers concept was some much needed development and rules to a concept that had virtually none.

It may be a bit of a leap, but it makes a lot of sense why people would want EQG to start introducing sci-fi. If magic is a concept that suffers due to the sometimes unpredictable ways in which it works (which isn't a bad concept, but has become one due to its way of being a crutch for conflicts), then throwing in sci-fi likely allows for more concrete concepts and conflicts. In addition, the sci-fi elements also start building the EQG world itself making it more relatable, meaningful, and interesting. As secret agent Ace Thruster infiltrating Canterlot High with his mech suit is to me and several others, a more compelling plot and insight into the EQG world than yet another person being corrupted by magic.

TL;DR: The EQG world is boring because little development, magic is boring due to it having so few rules. People complain and want sci-fi because it is the easiest way to salvage this concept.

They want you to know why it's bad to act a certain way, to remember what's wrong with it and what you can do to avoid doing it.

It's a show for kids.
