It's not just the fandom stigma. There is a lot about this franchise that we sort of take for granted that would be very off putting for a first time viewer. Like the character names for example, I remember when I was first getting into pony hearing a name like Twilight Sparkle or Pinkie Pie would be an instant reminder that I was watching a little girl's show and was immediately pulled out of the experience.
There's also the fact that for most people the mere act of watching pony is in and of itself very embarrassing. There are going to be a lot of critics sitting down to watch pony for the first time and feel very uncomfortable throughout the whole experience, negatively impacting their enjoyment and their review by proxy.

Speaking just from my own experience, when I first saw the pilot two parter, my initial thoughts were "it's okay, but I don't see what the big deal is about". However, when I re-watched the whole season a second time I discovered the first two episodes are actually really great, but I couldn't see that at the time because I was too uncomfortable with myself for watching a little girl's show.

I feel it's going to be little more than a longer, flashier commercial for the toys. I feel that the staff are going to have to shoehorn in tons of unnecessary plot elements and songs to allow the "Hollywood actors" their limelight, which means pushing the regular cast to the backseat. I think the reason for that is they want it to be accessable to a wider audience. Obviously this is a kids film and kids clearly haven't seen all 169 (by the time the film is released I'm assuming) episodes and parents and other moviegoers would be extremely confused if we got a lot of that stuff. It's all meant to be a brightly colored well animated family film, so I feel like taking that route will help it in the long run with ticket sales and merchandising. It's not some anime movie where it directly ties into the series and you have to watch every episode to understand it.
