Whilst Ponies are clearly herbivores and probably almost entirely vegetarian, they still live with Gryffins and cats and dogs, so while eating meat in front of them probably WOULD freak a lot of them out, many would be understanding about it.

Shits actually really good, it's not too dissimilar to beef in terms of taste but horse steak is extremely lean meat, there's virtually no fat in it, when cooked right it is a very tender and juicy.
On top of that, horse meat is actually more expensive than standard beef due to the fact that farming horses for meat is far less common than cows, meaning cheap burger places would actually save less money if they use horse in their burgers. If anything they'd use rats or some other form of common vermin to cheapen the meat.
