Castle (More specifically the map) was made from the rainbow power.
Rainbow power came from the box.
The box came from putting the elements back in the tree.
The elements had to go back in the tree because of discords rape seeds.

Rape seeds are present before the show started, we cant physically change that ourselves unless we end up in the same time period as discords first banishment
Discord will also likely never get rid of them unless he does a complete 180' in personality, the Tree of Harmony is basically his antithesis, while he's not actively gunning for it he's not about to put that gun at his head again.
We CAN, however, prevent the libary from being destroyed in the first place by neutralising Tirek as a threat.
He escapes from Tartarus in season 2, which gives us plenty of time to either set up some more security or failing that re-activate Equestria's X-COM program to track him down or at least prepare some anti anti-magic countermeasures.

Sorry for falling off the face of the Earth for a few days there, but I'm back to try to finish off what I started. However, I might need some help from you guys.

Part of the problem I'm having in writing this stems from not having an idea of what the show should have become without Twilight's ascension. There's no doubt that it's the most prominent narrative thread of the latter part of the show, and being immersed in it for so long has coloured my perception somewhat, to the point where my deference to canon is at war with my creative sensibilities. Thus, I don't know what sort of changes I would make, or even could make, if I could change events from within the show's established canon.

That's where you guys come in.

To the people that didn't like/want Twilight's ascension, what would you have happen otherwise?
Would you prefer if the status quo of the earlier seasons were maintained, but the events of later seasons still happen?
Should Twilight still have symbolically graduated from being Celestia's student, perhaps to some sort of harmony/friendship scholar, but without the wings?
If you're not entirely opposed to her ascension, is it because it happened too early in the show's run? If so, would you have been okay with it happening in the penultimate or final season?

I'd imagine things would be in stasis with Celestia attempting to try and make it happen via other means, complete with 360 head spins, projectile vomitting, scarring and her voice deepening while claiming "I AM THE HASBRO", or either; just give up and give her the same responsibilities claiming it's "next level stuff", or graduate her and she becomes some really important magic academic figure like starswirl, except utilises friendship more.

You'd still get the Elements being given up, though. As well as Cadence, SA and Flurry Heart outside of murder (and if we're willing to break the spacetime continuum, killing a few people who's main crime is simply existing should be pretty easy to try without regret).

Her being an alicorn princess literally only matters during the Tirek finale and when she's angsting about her purpose as a princess, there's nothing plot centric that requires it.

Stories like this always work best when the reader can adequately explain how each change from canon branches off the intial change, this being Anon's inclusion and his autistic knowledge of the show.
If you want examples, there's a whole host of fanfiction in multiple genres that go with the "For want of a nail" concept, most bad but there are a couple gems out there.

She's still the Element of Magic and Celestia's Personal Student, which is about as important as Princess for all the clout it gave her.

She could have ascended if Tirek was still a thing and the 3 other alicorns decided to hide their magic in Twilight again, which would temporarily ascend her to said status.
