I think a lot of fans of MLP became fans of it purely for the "fandom" aspect of it, and were seeking community and acceptance.
So a good number of fans of MLP became fans because of all the fun of shitposting with each other and making fan content, and making up stuff with fanon that had nothing to do with the show. Basically, to "belong".

As such, now that the belonging aspect is evaporating, or now that they've gotten new social contacts besides pony, they're left with the show itself as the only reason to enjoy pony-- additionally, with less people i the fandom, its less acceptable to like pony than it was 3 years ago when it was at hot topic and shit.
So now the fans leaving are disgusted with themselves for associating with pony just for social interaction, more or less.

this is a big issue with the EQG universe, moreso than the FIM universe.
The mane six are ABSURDLY flat characters in Equestria girls, with zero differences with their pony selves; this leaves the writers nothing new to work with, no new directions to take the other 5.
On the other hand, Human twilight was built from the ground up to be a unique character, which gives them leeway and ways to tackle the character in a new way.


As such, EQG has big issues with ONLY twilight and sunset shimmer being able to have stories told about them, or focus on them. The other 5 are just stale clones.

You can deny it all you want but the first and second season were made with mostly children in mind, Lauren wanted to make a show that parents wouldn't be bored out of their minds watching with their kids but didn't intend to have an adult fanbase, this of course reflected in the show as being ultimately just a cute little show made primarily for kids.

Of course as time went on the adult fanbase got more notice and the tone of the show was slightly tweaked towards them, don't get me wrong I'm not saying the whole show was now intended for adults, it's still a kids show, but it started to become far more apparent that the writers were keeping the brony fanbase in mind whenever they made new episodes, not just "well, maybe some parent will have to watch this with their kid"
