>The rest of the team is starting to pay attention to the pair as the drill goes on, their own practice forgotten.
>It's becoming increasingly hard to ignore the princesses raging Royal Canterlot Voice.
>"FASTER MOONDANCER, FASTER! DO NOT TELL ME THOU ART ALREADY GETTING TIRED!?"
>Luna's keeping the pressure on with the dummies, forcing Moondancer to levitate the ball and use all four legs to dodge and weave in the pocket.
>A dummy flies in and hits the ball, knocking it out of the unicorn's telekinetic grasp.
>"LEVITATING THE BALL ART DANGEROUS! KEEP IT IN THINE HOOVES!"
>Moondancer quickly recovers the ball and throws it to a target.
>It misses the target wide.
>"AGAIN! FWEEEEEEEEE!"
>Again and again, Moondancer keeps trying to hit her targets, but she keeps missing.
>Having enough, Luna tweets her whistle for the snap and guns the dummies straight at Moondancer.
>Before she has time to dodge, all three blocking dummies crash into the quarterback.
>Two of them sandwich her and the last launches into her chest, taking her off her hooves.
>She's thrown onto her back with a wet, but painful, thud and skids to a stop in a watery puddle.
>Luna and the Royals gasp at Moondancer's harsh landing.
>The princess didn't realize how much force she put into the blocking dummy's hit and her face showed that she immediately regretted what she had done.
>"Moondancer!"
>Her whistle falls out of her magic as she rushes to the fallen mare.

>Luna gallops up to Moondancer's side and gingerly puts a hoof on the pony's shoulder.
>"Moondancer? Art thou... are you alright?"
>Moondancer groans in response and her senses slowly come back to her.
>When she sees her princess standing over her, she quickly looks away and rolls onto her belly.
>She clumsily tries to take her helmet off, fumbling with the chin strap.
>Luna's magic undoes the chin strap for her and she lifts the helmet off.
>Luna tries to check Moondancer for any injuries, but the pony flinches away from the princesses touch.
>Moondancer continues to look away from Luna, rubbing a hoof in her eyes, looking as if she's trying to remove rainwater from her vision.
>But upon further inspection, Luna realizes that Moondancer is trying her best to keep from crying.
>Tears well up in the corners of her eyes and, with Luna's hoof guiding her, Moondancer finally faces the princess.
>"I-I'm so sorry princess. I'm so pathetic..."
>Luna lays down and consoles her little pony, "Oh Moondancer, don't speak of yourself that way."
>"B-but it's true! I'm weak. I'm a horrible quarterback. I-I can't c-correctly pass the ball half the time. I couldn't even do your drill."
>Luna's guilt gets the better of her.
>"I'm the one who should apologize, not you. I pushed you too hard. Much too hard. Hitting you with dummies was completely unnecessary and utterly cruel of me."
>Moondancer sniffles a bit and looks at the inert blocking dummies laying beside them.
>"Please princess, there's no need to apologize. This is hoofball... I've been hit worse than that."
>"That is no excuse on my part! I let my anger get the better of me. I shouldn't have put so much pressure on you in a simple drill. You were simply doing your best."
>"Yeah? Well my best isn't good enough!"
>>
>>30290146
>The unicorn's tears threaten to spill as she begins to sob.
>"Every game, it feels like I let everypony down. The team, the fans, the city, even you and your sister!"
>"I don't... I don't deserve to be on this team!"
>Before Moondancer can say anymore, Luna takes her cheeks in both her hooves and forces her looks her right in the eye.
>"Moondancer. Look at me."
>The poor pony is on the verge of tears, but she does as her princess says.
>"I will not tolerate a pity party from the likes of you. You are a better mare than that."
>She continues sniffling in her princesses hooves, but keeps listening none the less.
>"It takes a lot to play for the Royals, and any team in the EHF for that matter! You might not be the best... but that absolutely does not mean you don't deserve to be here."
>Luna gingerly lets go of Moondancer's face.
>Moondancer rubs a hoof in her eye, dispelling a few errant tears, but it looks like Luna's small pep talk helped keep her from having a breakdown.
>Luna gives a kind smile and puts a reassuring hoof on Moondancer's shoulder.
>"You have so much potential Moondancer. The entire team does. I can see it in you all every time your out on the field. You play your heart out, like a true warrior. That's why it drive's me crazy when you lose a game. The potential is there, you just need to believe in yourself and hone your skills, Moondancer. Practice!"
>Luna takes her hoof away and looks down at the ground. Her mood suddenly becomes morose as well.
>"I thought I could help the Royals, but perhaps I shouldn't have interfered in team affairs like I did. I apologize for my rough treatment of you."
>The princess begins to stand up, but Moondancer suddenly puts her hoof on her's.
>"Please don't go princess."

I like this. I'm mentally comparing it to how this kind of scene would work in real life's macho sports environment, and I'm thinking it wouldn't. Well, at least not exactly like that. The coach might see the broken player and give them a pep talk about believing in their potential, but he'd light that player up if he saw him cry.

But these are ponies, and they're a lot more honest and sensitive (Luna and Moondancer especially). So I think it's fitting.

Also, props on that Old English
>>
>>30293391

Bouncers dominating division 2. I don't know if anyone in their division can catch up.

Zephyrs and Elements are neck and neck... Am I the only one who sees them as rivals?
>>
>>30299110
I can definitely see them as rivals. The Zephyrs are the only team to have beaten the Elements so far if I recall correctly. So, I'm sure Ponyville sort of resents them for that and wants nothing more than to get even.

>>30297339
Good game.
High scoring and down to the last moment it was anyone's game. Sentries had some stand out moments with the early touchdown and the pick six, but the Dragons have a kicker and quarterback worth their weight in gold. Sure Shot is a beast.

The late game interception didn't do CE any favors and probably it's what sealed the Sentries fate.
>>
>>30299110
I think that the Dragons can contend with the Bouncers.
They have just as many wins and they've played more games than LAP. Those extra losses are the only reason they're second rank.
>>
>>30299718
We'll see, since every team is going to play the same number of games.
>>

>>
How would a pony do playing football with humans?
>>
>>30301034
With their low center of gravity, they'd likely win. How would humans even tackle them?
>>
>>30301714
Well, to me it depends on their size. If they really are little, about the size of a medium dog, then it's simply a matter of catching them and forcing your weight on their back to bring them down.
If they're bigger, the size of an actual pony, and they can take the weight, then it'll not be as simple. Might have to gang tackle a pony to bring them down, or aim for the legs.
But who could bring themselves to do that to a pony
>>
>>30301871
If they're the size of a dog how are they going to tackle a human? They couldn't even block anybody.

>She picks herself off of the soggy ground, lifting Luna with her.
>"I think I speak for myself, and for the rest of the team, when I say that it is an honor to have the official support of the princess of the night, no matter how rough the treatment might be"
>Both the unicorn and alicorn chuckle at that.
>"We're just don't want to let anypony down, least of all you and you sister. It means a lot that you feel so strongly about our success in this little sport"
>Luna blushes and lets another chuckle slip.
>"Oh but Moondancer, hoofball is no laughing matter. Even our nations greatest heroes play the fine sport."
>Moondancer nods, remembering the namesake of the Ponyville Elements and their dominance this season.
>"Well, we might not be the Elements of Harmony, but we're warriors all the same, hehe."
>"Truly, Moondancer. Shall we get back to it then?"
>The unicorn salutes her royal coach.
>"As you command my princess."
>Moondancer envelops the whistle Luna dropped in her magic and dangles it in front of her.
>"But, I think you'll need this your highness."
>Luna takes the whistle back with a smile and strings it around her neck.
>She nods to Moondancer, and the quarterback trots back over to her center.
>"Umm, Moondancer?", Luna calls.
>The unicorn stops and turns around.
>"I think your forgetting this?"
>Luna holds up Moondancer's helmet.
>Moondancer blushes hard and runs back to the princess, taking the helmet with an embarrassed smile.
>"Hehe... sorry."
>"No worries... now."
>Luna levitates the whistle to her mouth, a gleam in her eye returning.
>"Art thou ready, Moondancer?"

You know, I never considered how a pony might kick. A human can really only kick one way, but a pony has several ways they could kick it.

Do you suppose, in the EHF, it's standard to kick l on 2 legs like in that comic? Or maybe they stay on 4 legs and kick with their front leg? Or maybe they buck it like AJ.

Would the some of the teams of the EHF have marching bands?
I figured music loving ponies would get in on stadium wide cheers, chants, and songs, and some musical accompaniment would have to be in order.
>>
>>30333178
That seems like a pony sort of thing to do. Though their bands would probably be more cheerful and colorful than what humans would do. There would definitely be cheerleaders, too.

Discord's Marelem Globetrotters are back! Check the pastebin in the OP to catch up on it. It needs to be replaced, but it's current for now.

>You line up against the Sentries again.
>It's 2nd and 10, the Sentries still on their own 7 yard line.
>You have your eye on a clone who is playing safety.
>He is wearing shorts and long socks, he's missing his helmet and his jersey features thick vertical stripes.
>Isn't that a uniform for a different sport?
>How peculiar!
>The Sentries go for another running play.
>QB Crystal Stitch hoofs it off to Turf Rush again, who seems to have shaken off the last hit.
>He swiftly makes his way around the line.
>However, before he makes too many yards, your safety slide tackles him.
>The crowd gasps, and a whistle tweets loudly as a referee approaches the field.
>This referee looks different than usual, though.
>Taller, especially handsome, has a lion's paw and a dragon's claw... Where have you seen him before?
>The ref comes up to the strangely-dressed safety and holds up a yellow card.
>Outaged, the safety begins to quarrel with the ref.
>Nearly instantly, the ref holds up another card.
>This time it's red.
>The safety aggressively walks to the ref, but other clones arrive to hold back the safety just in time.
>The safety shakes them away, dramatically stomps off to the bench, takes a seat, and pouts angrily.

Dog-size is actually about right. But tackling a dog is much harder than tackling a human.

I'd honestly say probably somewhere in between the two.

>The actual referee steps in, and deems that foul earns the Sentries 15 yards and a first down.
>Not that you, the Master of Chaos, care who wins.
>However, you must admit that you want to try offense.
>As you line up, you decide you'll actually stop them this time.
>The Sentries hike the ball, and you see their wide receiver go deep.
>Crystal Stitch launches the ball, and the wide receiver picks up her pace to catch up with it.
>Suddenly, she hears a police siren go off behind her.
>She pulls over to the sideline, and a tall police officer parks his motorcycle behind her.
>As the cop dismounts his bike, the ball bounces on the turf, evoking laughter from the crowd.
>You take your time walking up to the agitated Sentry.
>Finally, you take a good, long look at her through your aviators.
>Annoyed, she asks, "Is something *wrong*, officer?"
>After a tense pause, you lower your sunglasses.
"Ma'am, do you know how fast you were going?"
>She scoffs, but the crowd snickers.
>"Oh, sorry, sir. But my speedometer is broken. How fast was I going?"
>You like her.
>But you have a quota to fill.
"Too fast! Didn't you see the sign?"
>You point to a "SLOW: CHILDREN PLAYING" sign.
"You could have hurt someone! Won't you think of the children?"
>Then, you point to a small group of tiny Discords in propeller caps tossing around a hoofball.
"They're good kids," you mutter with a smile.
>You turn to face the speeder.
"Now, back to you, Miss..."
>"Amber Waves."
"Miss Amber Waves. You could have hurt them! I'm going to have to give you a ticket," you say while scribbling on a notepad.
>"What!? That's not fair!"
"It's more than fair! It could have been worse, you know. Or would you like a bigger ticket?"
>You poof up a giant notepad and wave it around.
>"Oh, uh, no, sir. I'll pay the smaller ticket."
>The giant notepad vanishes.
"That's what I thought. Have a good day, ma'am. Please drive safely."
>She takes the ticket with an exasperated sigh and returns to her teammates.

>"Ah know yer new to hoofball, Fluttershy, so I'll teach ya a thing or two about kickin'. Ah've got plenty of experience with that from workin' here at the farm, after all."
>"Oh, thank you so much, Applejack! I'm so glad I can help the team in a way where I don't have to hurt anypony."
>Fluttershy fidgets nervously.
>"...And I admit, it'll be nice that I won't get hit very much."
>Applejack smiles wide.
>"Yup, Ah reckon being the kicker will be the perfect fit for ya. Now, whattaya say we get started with the basics?"
>With a nod of approval from the yellow pegasus, Applejack picks up a hoofball from the ground with her foreleg.
>"There are a couple o' ways you can kick a hoofball. The first is a drop kick. This is when ya stand on your hind legs, drop the ball, n' kick it like this."
>Fluttershy watches intently as the farmer pony performs exactly what she described.
>The ball flies through the air for about 10 yards.
>The pegasus claps her hooves together while Applejack reaches for another ball.
>"Heh, don't be too impressed by that, Fluttershy. My drop kick is pretty weak, which is one reason Ah'm not the kicker. But watch me do the other kind of kick: the buck. This is when the ball is held in place by yer teammate, or set on a tee. And this is how ya kick it."
>With that, she faces away from the ball, backs up to it, and gives it a mighty buck with her hind legs.
>It soars over all the apple trees in sight. Neither pony can see where it lands.
>"Oh my, Applejack! You're so good at this!"
>"Well, heheh, I'm actually too good... Ah kick the ball right outta the stadium! It's the other reason Ah'm not the kicker. Here, why don't you try a buck first? It's a little easier for beginners."
>Applejack sets another hoofball on the tee, and awaits Fluttershy's performance.

>Fluttershy lifts her head up and keeps it straight, just as Applejack says.
>"And your legs are spread out to much, bring em' in an' straightn' your back."
>The pegasus adjusts her legs and back, standing straight as she can, almost awkwardly.
>There are a few other flaws in Fluttershy's stance that Applejack notices, but the big ones are taken care of, so she gets on with it.
>"Good. Now just... kick out."
>Fluttershy takes aim and gives her leg a couple more practice swings.

>Fluttershy takes in a deep breath.

I've never really been a fan of sudden death rules in football either.
Like, it doesn't seem fair to a team's offense if their opponents score in the first drive and auto win without giving them a chance to try.
On the flip side, it could just turn into a back and forth and prolong the game even more than it should.

But, >>30364283 reason is as good as any. Raised stakes always heightens drama, and sudden death is about as raised stakes as you get in sports.

>>
>>30381505
EHF has no preseason, preseason's usually used for warming up teams, IIRC.
>>
>>30381522
So what your saying is since there was no transition from pre-season to season for the teams to adjust, they are just adjusting right now?
>>
>>30381561
Probably.
At least that's from prior experience.
Not to mention injuries and such.
Teams tend to figure things out later in a season, especially if everyone's close together.
>>
>>30381580
Huh. That's pretty neat. There do tend to be more injuries in preseaon football irl. Hopefully that trend will downplay as the season goes on.

I hope the Zephyrs figure things out by mid season. I don't know if I want either them or the Elements to win it all in the championship, but I at least what them to do good. Make the playoffs for sure. The Elements seem to have a handle on things, so I'm not as worried about them.

How many weeks in the season do we have left?

>Or at least that's what Applejack was hoping for.
>In actuality, Fluttershy loses balance in her kick and falls on her belly.
>Her hoof does manage to graze the ball, but it just spins it out of it's tee like a spinning top and flops pathetically to the ground.
>Applejack facehoofs.
>Fluttershy facehoofs.
>The hoofball facehoofs.
>"What in tarnation Fluttershy," Applejack sighs through her hoof.
>Fluttershy flails on the ground.
>"I'm sorry! I-I wasn't ready! I can kick it, I promise!"
>Applejack helps her friend up and dusts her off.
>"It's okay Flutters, that was only your first try. It's why we're practicing."
>AJ sets the ball on the tee again and steps back.
>She tries to give Fluttershy another encouraging smile.
>"Ya got it this time sugarcube, I just know it."
>Internally, AJ wondered if Fluttershy's buckball skills didn't translate over to hoofball all that well.

Exposed wings in hockey is a horrible idea. They'd definitely get battered and bruised, and likely broken, with all the body checking going on. Even with padding, bodies get put through the ringer in hockey. Gotta keep those wings protected.

I was joking that she got traded to the Sentries, but for some reason she got placed on the cheer squad... which she probably wouldn't like.

Cheerleaders are hired by the team, but are not tradable. That's an interesting thought though. Cheer ponys are top commodities.

>>30402539
Wow, Yuma Spurs coming in clutch. I love that 2-point conversion attempt, too. There was no reason to go for the 1 extra point, because they already had a lead, and a field goal from the Dragons would beat it anyway. At least the 2-pointer would force a tie if the Dragons scored a field goal.

It's neat that the sim has that kind of detail.

Hell yeah! Go Gabby and go Cloudsdale!
I have a question though. How did Spits get injured on a rush play she didn't run in?
>>
>>30403888
Probably got hit trying to block
>>
>>30404026
>quarterback
>blocking
She got what she deserved
>>
>>30404186
That or she got squashed after the handoff.
>>
>>30404186
She's a team player anon, doing what she can to help the team win. Can't blame her for that.

>>30404205
If that's the case, then whoever squashed her must have exploited a really bad gap in the O-line to get to her that quickly. Bad on Cloudsdale if that's the case.
>>
>>30404205
Also, wouldn't that be a late hit and call for a penalty?
>>
>>30404258
Not if the play's still going.
>>
>>30404277
I mean a tackle, not a block... or are those kinda the same thing?
>>
>>30404329
You can't be called for a late hit during the play on the QB unless he's passing.

You're talking about roughing the passer.
>>
>>30404345
Oh ok. I just thought you couldn't knock someone down if they didn't have the ball.
>>
>>30404388
You aren't supposed to, but if they touched the ball recently, sometimes they get hit. Like a QB fakes a handoff and the RB gets hammered.
>>
>>30404429
I think that's how First Down got injured a couple weeks ago.

But yeah, anon's right. If your anywhere near the ball, your prime realistate for tackle city.
>>
>>30404429
>>30404459
Man, that's pretty brutal. Somepony must of had it in for ol' Spitzy to squash her like that then.
>>
>>30404501
Well, we don't know if that's exactly how it happened, since there's no visual element to the sim. All we know for sure is that she was injured on the play.

Plus, nobody was out to hurt her probably. Most injuries are accidents after all. But, if the injury list is any indication, these players can get rough with each other for sure.
>>
>>30403427
Oh, Las Pegasus... How the mighty have fallen. Now they officially have a losing record. I feel kinda bad for them. Will they ever recover?

Also, Gabby keeps getting Touchdowns every time they run her. Is it possible that they might make her the starter QB?
>>
>>30404630
She at least has to be for a little while.

The Bouncer's fall from grace is really making me worried about the Zephyrs. They had very similar starts to their seasons and are both on a downward spiral. I don't want muh team to lose!

I need to go back over the game reports in more detail to see what their playstyle is like and see where they succeeded before and where they are failing now.
Can you give any insight into that at all SimAnon? The Zephyr's overall gameplan or main strategy?
>>
>>30404695
It could be because Air Raid has not thrown a TD pass since week 4.
>>
>>30404854
At least that's what I'm going with since they're running a west coast/pass oriented offense.
>>
>>30404854
This is really concerning. Maybe defenses really are adapting and performing better pass coverage?

>>30404861
If they don't put out in the next game, then they should seriously consider getting their running game on. Though then again, I don't know how strong that would be without First Down.

Finally made an update to the First Down green after forever.

I'm going to re-post some stuff since it's been awhile since the last update. Green inbound.
>>
>Be First Down.
>Today is your first day as a Manehattan Zephyr!
>Your so nervous and excited you can barely handle yourself.
>Currently flying to the Zephyr's training camp, you can't keep a big, stupid grin from forming on your face as the facility appears in the distance.
>It's nestled on the outskirts of the city, and since its not too awful far from where you live, you thought flying there would be a good idea.
>It wasn't.
>It was the worst.
>You were never the strongest flier.
>As far as pegasi go, you are actually pretty bad.
>Due to some sort of birth defect, your wings are slightly smaller than normal and have damaged nerve endings on top of that.
>It makes your wings hard to control and the muscles get exhausted a lot quicker during flights.
>Still, flying was quicker than walking.
>You felt you could make the trip and get a warm up in before camp today, but your kind of regretting that decision now.
>Incidentally, this wing defect is the reason you play hoofball.
>Thunderball was your first sport of choice as a wee filly, just like dear old dad wanted.
>But, the bad wings kept that dream from taking flight.
>So, you turned to hoofball!
>Your family lived on the ground in Manehattan; and still does.
>Your unicorn and earth pony friends got you interested in the game and you became involved with a pee-wee team.
>You fondly remember your first hoofball game:
>What you lack in flight you make up for in running speed.
>Every time you had the ball in your little hooves, you ran it for a first down or a touchdown, always gaining yards each play.
>You ran the ball so many yards that game you broke the team record.
>You also got your cutie mark: a spiraling hoofball breaking out of cloud cover.

>What a glorious day that was.
>Ah memories...
>And another glorious day will be added to them after today!
>You glide down and make your landing outside the Zephyr's training complex.
>It's a trio of buildings situated across the river from Manehattan.
>They are all constructed of concrete and steel, just like their counterparts across the river.
>There is also an open hoofball field and a one story red brick building on the backside of the facility that don't match the style of the rest of the complex.
>They must be older than the other two structures.
>You touchdown in front of the biggest, most official building of the lot.
>The letter explained that you needed to come early to sign your contract and some paper work before the first practice of the off season.
>You made sure to arrive early so you could get your stuff signed first, before the other new recruits showed up.
>After taking a breather for a minute, you head on inside.
>The foyer is completely empty, devoid of any activity this early in the morning.
>The only pony present is a receptionist at the front desk; a light green unicorn with a blue mane in a stereotypical secretary bun.
>She notices you as you walk to the counter.
>"Good morning Miss! How can I help you this morning?"
"I'm here for off season training. I need to meet the coach and manager to sign some paperwork?"
>"Oh! You must be one of the new players. Let me check my appointments book."
>She levitates a big red and blue book out from under the desk and opens it to today's date
>Skimming through it she stops at a set of names.
>"Ah yes, here we go. And may I get your name please?
"First Down."
>She giggles a little, "How appropriate."
>She closes the book and levitates it back under the desk.
>"I saw your name with the others Miss Down. Your a bit early, but the coach should be available for your visit."
"Terrific! Where can I find him?"
>>
>>30422756
>"He's in his office. Up the stairs, down the hallway, third door on the left, right by the water fountain."
"Cool. Thank you ma'm."
>She gives you a warm smile, "Of course Miss Down. If you need anything, I'll be right here."
>You thank her and head up the large foyer staircase, straight to the coaches office.
>Sure enough, you find his door.
>It's marked with a bronze name plate etched with his name: Coach Gridiron.
>The butterflies in your stomach come back again as you stand there.
>Your about to meet the coach of your hoofball icons!
>That feeling of excitement and nausea grows as the weight of the occasion really hits you.
>Your about to sign on to play for the EHF! Play for the Manehattan Zephyrs! YOUR TEAM!
>You dance in place and almost squeal in anticipation.
>But you get a hold of yourself.
>There's no reason to be nervous Downey, your practically already on the team. Just go in there, meet the coach, and make it official.
>You check over yourself and your bag as you make sure your presentable.
>You take a deep breath and knock on the door.
>"Yeah? Come in."
>A masculine voice answers your knock.
>You open the door and see the stallion himself sitting behind a desk, with stacks of paperwork and a large planner.
>He looks up and smiles.
>"Ah, First Down. So glad to see you come out here so early."
>Oh gosh. Oh Celestia! He remembered your name!
>A grin breaks out on your face as he reaches for a hoofshake.
>You eagerly grab it and give a firm shake.
>"Heh, I see someone is excited to be here."
"Oh sir, you have no idea. I'm literally living a dream right now!"
>"Oh I know that feeling alright. How about you take a seat before you rip my leg off, eh?"
>You come out of your reverie and see your still vigorously shaking the poor stallion's hoof. You immediately let go.
"Oh! I'm so sorry sir!"
>He merely laughs it of and beckons you to take a seat.
>>
>>30422772
>You take your seat across from Gridiron.
>"So, kid, I take it your real excited to be here today?"
>You beam.
"Oh yes sir! I'm so happy to be given this once in a lifetime opportunity to be apart of the best hoof-"
>"Woah woah. No need to be so formal kid. Just wanted to know how you feel."
"Hehe. Yeah, sorry. I'm just very excited sir."
>"That's great."
>He looks over you and raises an eye brow.
>"Did you workout before coming here."
"Huh?"
>"There's some sweat stains on your fur..."
>You look at your pits and wing joints and see the subtle stains of perspiration.
>A quick whiff even confirms you got lingering B.O.
>Eww.
"Oh, well kinda. I flew here sir."
>"Did you fly a long way or something?"
"No sir. I'm just not a strong flier. I've got weak wings."
>His face turns from casual to serious when you mention your wing defect.
>Oh no! You might have made a bad impression on him!
>You stutter out an excuse.
"B-but it won't affect my performance sir! I promise. I'm not a good flier, but you won't find a faster runner in Manehattan!"
>"Hmm. Regardless, I'd rather you not exert yourself before every practice. Your not in school anymore kid, this is the big leagues. These practices are going to whip you into shape for the EHF season. I need you at your best before every practice. It's no cake walk.
>Your suddenly very apprehensive at those words, but you give him a nod.
>"Atta girl. Just take a public carriage from now on."
>Coach Gridiron rummages through his desk and takes out a few books, laying them on his desk before looking at you expectantly.
>"So, First Down, have any questions for me while we wait on the General Manager?"
>>
>>30422786
>You briefly think it over and you do have some questions.
"Just a few. On the letter, it said that I'm not a part of the main roster. I'm on a practice squad? Not that I'm not grateful to be on the team at all, sir! I'm just curious what exactly my function on the team is."
>The coach nods his head in understanding.
>"That's a good question First. What that means is exactly that, your on the practice squad, a group of players on the team dedicated to running drills and procedures with the rest of the team. Practice squad members are almost always new blood that are not draft picks. Free agents mostly. It gives us a chance to test the water with new team members, get a gauge for their strengths and weaknesses... It's also a payroll thing.
>Why doesn't that last part surprise you.
>"Now don't let that make you think your less important than anypony else on the team. Come hoofball season, you participate in game days with the rest of the team: gear up, wear the uniform, the works! Just don't expect any play time right off the bat."
>Okay. Practice with the team and hone your skills. Sounds legit.
>And you still get to be on the sidelines wearing the ol' red and blue!
>You were afraid you'd be a glorified tackling dummy or something. Glad that's not the case.
"Awesome! And what are we doing today?"
>Gridiron smiles at that question.
>"Well I'll tell you right now, we'll hit the ground running with training. No proper drills involving formations and plays or anything like that. But trust me, you'll be given plenty to do for the next few weeks."
>Ooooo, "hit the ground running" he says. Alright, your game.
"Sounds intense coach, but I'm ready for whatever you throw at me."
>"That's what I like to hear kid."
>You had one more question to ask.
"So uhh... when do I meet the rest of the team!?"
>Gridiron gives another knowing smirk.
>>
>>30422868
>"Can't wait to see some of your heroes eh? Don't worry, you'll be heading to the equipment room to be assigned gear and a locker, then you'll be able to mingle in the locker room before practice starts. But, before that happens, that GM of ours needs to show up."
>And as if on cue, you hear the door behind you open.
>You turn to see the Zephyr's general manager walk in with a stack of papers.
>She's a pink unicorn mare in a three piece suit, which is in the team's colors of course.
>The mare is all business, with a professional, no nonsense air about her.
>She doesn't look like she's in a good mood, but it's hard to tell with these business types.
>The manager looks you up and down, appraising you, before extending her free hoof for a hoofshake.
>"No Nonsense, Manehattan GM."
>You take her hoof.
"My name is First Down ma'am. I'm-"
>"Yes, the filly from the tryout. I remember."
"Oh."
>"Yeah kid, Ms. Nonsense here remembers everyone, especially the ones she hires."
>"Please refrain from referring to me by that name Mr. Gridiron."
>"Hehe... sorry Ms. N."
>No Nonsense drops the stack of papers on the desk with a thud.
>"Now, we have some business to take care of Ms. Down. Namely, signing you contract."
>You gulp at the pillar of forms teetering at the edge of the desk.
>"Is all that paperwork for me?"
>"No Ms. Down. Only the top portion. The rest is for the other new members, who, I might add, are waiting outside your door Mr. Gridiron. So, let's get started shall we?"
>>
>>30422883
>You, No Nonsense, and Gridiron read through your contract.
>They explain anything you don't understand and touch on the finer points of requirements, responsibilities, code of conduct, and salary.
>Waivers, health benefits, and leave conditions are also covered.
>It's a pain to go through, but you eventually reach the last page.
>The signature page.
>You've been dreaming of this moment for your whole life.
>It's hard to believe that that dream is only a hoofprint away now.
>No Nonsense slides you an ink sponge and you gingerly press your hoof into it.
>Your hoof hovers over the page before carefully pressing into the dotted square, leaving a perfect hoofmark.
>Ms. N gives you a receipt copy, takes the original contract, and puts it in a folder.
>"And with that, it is official. Welcome to the Manehattan Zephyrs Hoofball Franchise Ms. Down."
>Coach smiles at you.
>"Your one of us now kid! How does it feel?"
>Your internally screaming.
>Keep your cool Downey. Have some poise for once.
"Ahem. Proudest moment of my life sir."
>"Good to hear. Now go get your gear from the Training Facility. It's the building across from the red-brick locker house and practice field. Practice will be starting in a couple hours."
>They give you directions there and send you on your way.
>You quickly trot past the other recruits waiting at the door and around the corner.
>Once your out of sight-
"..."
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"
>>
>>30422892
>Ok. That was a bit much.
>But come on, your officially a Manehattan Zephyr hoofball player now.
>On paper!
>Your moving up in the world First Down.
>The scream was a bit much though.
>You clamp down on your muzzle in embarrassment and check back around the corner.
>Everypony outside the office is staring at you.
"Sorry! It's fine, everything is fine! D-didn't mean to startle anypony. Uh, everything is peachy keen... Yep."
>You all stand there awkwardly before you attempt to slide off with a "Y-you too."
>But you bump into somepony in the hallway.
>Actually, you should say somegriffon.
>A large, light reddish brown griffon with a spotted white chest stands before you.
>You recognize her immediately and almost let out a squee right there.
>Phoebe Bronzewing.
>Zephyr linebacker and the lone griffon of the team.
>From what you remember, she is a relatively new addition to the Manehattan team.
>She came on the scene a few years ago at the Equestria Games and soon after pursued a career in hoofball.
>The Zephyrs picked her up and she's been with them for the past 2 years.
>Strong, sturdy, but deceivingly nimble, she became one of the most important defenseponies on Manehattan's roster.
>Er... defensegriffon?
>"Hey..."
>That's kind of a mouth full.
>"Hey."
>Surely there's a better term.
>"Hey! Glue for brains!"
>You shake off your train of thought and focus on the griffon in front of you.
>She's got an irritated scowl on her face. A "what in Tartarus are you staring at?" look going right now.
>You realize you've just been staring at her like a dolt the whole time.
>Why do you have to be such a doofus?
>>
>>30422906
>The large, intimidating griffon puts a talon to your chest.
>"If your some fan who wandered in here, this building is off limits and you should leave."
"Oh no, I'm not a fan... I mean I am! Huge fan! I-I love your work!"
>I love your work?
>Really?
>"That's real super kid, but I don't care. You don't belong here. Now-"
>You put your hooves on her claw before she can push you away and try to explain yourself.
"B-but I do! I'm part of the team! Look!"
>You pull out your copy of the contract, hoofprint and all, and proudly display it with a smile.
> Bronzewing narrows her eyes and quickly scans the paper in your mouth, as if checking its legitimacy.
>She still doesn't seem satisfied, but she removes her claw from your chest, her expression gone from annoyed to non-plussed.
>"Oh... your a rookie."
"Mhmm!"
>You spit the paper out of your mouth.
"I'm your new teammate! The new blood! The new kid on the block! The fresh squeeze! The-"
>Bronzewing pinches your mouth shut mid sentence.
>"Still don't care short stuff."
>Oh. Okay.
>Sort of rude, but Bronzewing is known to be short and to the point with ponies, so you don't take it personally.
>Your not fan of her calling you short though.
>Your not short!
>Your compact like a runningback should be.
>>
>>30422920
>Bronzewing brushes past you, scooting you over with a wing.
>"I need to see Grid and Nonsense, so if you'll excuse me..."
>She turns the corner to Gridiron's office and notices the line of recruits waiting at his door.
>You step back up to her side.
"I think they're kinda busy right now."
>That annoyed look returns to her face, except this time she actually seems miffed about this.
>"Figures."
>She turns back to you.
>Your still just staring at her.
>Breathing through your mouth like an idiot.
>The two of you share an awkward silence before the griffon snaps at you.
>"...Don't you have somewhere to be rookie?"
>Oh man she's right!
>You need to get your equipment before practice you doof.
"Y-your right, I gotta go. It was nice meeting you though!"
>She just replies with a "Mhm."
>You raise your hoof for a hoofbump, but she leaves your hanging.
>It's whatever.
>She's too cool for hoofbumps.
>You canter down the hall toward the exit and shout back to your new teammate.
"Uh... see you at practice... fellow Zephyr!"
>She didn't respond, but your pretty sure you saw her roll her eyes.

Speaking of which, that was literally the best game Air Raid has ever played. He was a passing machine out there.
Even got a better rating than what Rarity normally gets.

It looks like the passing game was a good strategy this game. Though then again, they played against the Manticores, who are not all that tough of an opponent.

Well, RIP PON, I guess. But they'll bounce back. Rarity's gonna take the Elements to the Superb Owl. Who will be first to 5 wins? Is it like a 5-way tie right now for teams with 4-3 records?

Question for the green:
SimAnon, what's First Down's jersey number?
>>
>>30454856
30 right now.
>>
>You go straight from the main admin building to the training facility.
>The training facility houses a sizable gym, complete with a weight room, cardio room, and jogging track to boot.
>It's also where all the equipment needed for the hoofball team is handled and stored: uniforms, pads, helmets, shoes, balls, tackle slides, blocking dummies, other training equipment, and just about everything else you could ever need.
>You report to the equipment room and meet with the Equipment Manager and his assistant.
>They outfit you with everything a rookie needed for their first month of training:
>Practice jerseys, workout shorts, practice pants, shell pants, padded girdles, padded jock straps, practice sweats, sweat towels, leg bands, tail wraps, mane wraps, like three sets of cleated shoes, shoulder pads, wing harness, and a red practice helmet to top it all off.
"That's a lot of stuff."
>The equipment manager chuckles a bit at your comment.
>"Hehe. Wait until the season starts bud."
"Will all this even fit in my locker?"
>"Sure it will! You just gotta pack it in right. Now get going."
>They give you a large duffelbag to stuff everything in.
>You try your best to make all your gear fit.
>But it doesn't.
>Whatever.
>You placed the overstuffed duffel on your back and then balanced everything else on top of that.
>It took real steady hooves to keep it from falling all over the floor.
>All you had to do was make it to the locker room in the red brick building and you were in the clear.
>You carefully try to balance everything on your back as you make your way to the training facility's exit, but your walk is slow and awkward.
>You finally make it to the door and reach a hoof out to push it open, when it suddenly flings open right into you.
>>
>>30457871
>The door slams into your face and knocks you down, the gear you painstakingly packed and stacked getting strewn on the floor with you.
>Aw man! What in Tartarus?
>Even the gear in your bag spilled out on the linoleum.
>It was a pain in the flank to get all that crap in there!
>... Probably should have zipped it up in hindsight.
>But your not the villain here!
>You begin to get up to give the pony who knocked you over a piece of your mind...
>When you see towering over you a pair of the biggest stallions you've ever met.
>Emphasis on met.
>You've seen them before on the TV.
>In fact, you immediately recognized them the moment you saw them.
>Chock Block and Gyn Tackle!
>Offensive guard and defensive tackle, respectively, and sibling teammates of the Zephyrs.
>They're both almost identical, sans the coat and mane colors.
>Block has whitish fur and a maroon mane, while Tackle's coat is maroon and his mane is black.
>"Gyn, you idiot! You hit this poor mare with the door!"
>"Oh, I'm so sorry miss! Are you alright?"
>Their massive size. The slight Stalliongrad accents. The almost identical features they share.
>It's them alright.
>The brothers quickly offer you their hooves and pull you up.
>Block picks your things up off the floor, while Tackle politely dusts you off.
>"I'm terribly sorry young mare. I didn't hurt you, did I?"
>Of course, your star struck again and have trouble responding to the massive stallion.
>But, you recover better this time, compared to your last encounter.
"Uhhhh, yeah! Yeah I'm fine!"
>"Are you sure kid? I think I gave you... a uhhhh..."
>He gestures to your eye and you prod the top of your cheek with a hoof.
>A dull stinging sensation comes with the touch and you instinctively wince.
>Oh great. You got a black eye.

Has there been any more discussion about EHF all stars playing a team of dragons? I remember talking about it in the last thread and I really liked the idea.

I'd imagine dragons would have a strong passing game. Having claws should make it easier to pass, catch, and handle a hoofball after all. But, they probably like the physicality of running plays more and prefer to smash through defensive lines.
Dragons are also probably more in line to how you would see a real football team act, since they're basically the embodiment of overblown masculinity in the show. As such, they play aggressively on both sides of the ball. Physical runs and blocks on offense, and tight coverage and brutal tackles on defense.

Since it's hoofball, they'd have to play on all fours as per the rules, but that shouldn't be too much of a hindrance. They have tough scales that can withstand the heat of lava, so they probably don't need protective gear either. They're typically bigger in size than ponies and probably stronger and hardier too.

The more I think about it, the more a game seems stacked in their favor. What advantages could a pony team possibly have over dragons?
>>
>>30459235
I think I remember SimAnon saying it was kind of a pain to do that. But I don't remember exactly.

Dragons on all fours... I guess I never thought of that. However, I think they'd still need protective gear, but not for their own sake. Equipping dragons with padding will help prevent ponies from injury from sharp spines and hard scales.

It'd definitely be in favor of dragons if we go off of pure physical ability. But ponies would have better teamwork and tactics. I think they'd be generally faster, too. Dragons might get a lot of penalties, too.
>>
>>30459449
I think I remember him saying that too, now that you mention it.

Yeah, SimAnon suggested the rule that only quadrupeds play hoofball. Ponies, mules, donkeys, griffs, changelings, diamond dogs, and any species that can run on four legs. Going by the show, lots of dragons stand on their hind legs, but most of their leg to arm proportions can allow them to be on all fours without much hindrance.

You make a good point with the padding. I didn't even think about how that would affect the ponies. The thought of them getting slammed into steel hard scales and cut by sharp spines... Egh! The dragons would probably try to use that to their advantage.
It should definitely be prevented.

I thought this too. Good teamwork and cohesion is important to hoofball. Dragons would probably be glory hounds and ball hogs. More kinda doing their own thing during the play and not think about helping a teammate or something. Ponies also probably have an intelligence edge over dragons. Show definitely supports that theory.
Plus, ponies are smaller. Smaller targets means they're harder to tackle, especially if they gallop at full speed.

And the penalties... Wew! Dragons would foul every chance they got if they think it'll help them win.

>>
>>30501870
CE certainly has some talent on offense, namely Amber Waves and Amethyst Shard if that list you showed us is anything to go off of. But losing TWO QBs to injuries like those is pretty bad for the team.

It's like that green with the diamond dog straight killing the QBs from a few threads ago, except it's the Elements of all teams doing the killing this time.

17 Dodge Junction Bandits (3-5-0)
18 Canterlot Royals (4-4-0)
19 Las Pegasus Bouncers (3-6-0)
20 @Fillydelphia Manticores (2-5-0)
>>
>>30501943
Hmmm.

Well they play Filly and Dodge twice each, who are basically pass go and win teams, so that could be 4 Wins right there.

Canterlot is hit or miss, but they have a pretty okay defense imo, so not sure about them.

Cloudsdale would probably out score them, so Loss there.

They beat Manehattan pretty handily before, so possible Win maybe.

Bouncers on the down swing lately, so likely Win if they don't get their act together by the end of the season.

Ok, maybe the Sentries do have a shot. But, you probably know more about these teams than I and have more insight into their prospects desu.

And oh my, we're almost to post limit.
