If I might throw in my pair o' pennies, I actually had a good laugh at the joke. While I have no problem with nigger, I do believe the punchline would not have flowed as smoothly.

Regardless of how little stock you might put in the word, it still holds a rather strong twang that shines a spotlight on it and casts a shadow on the rest. It gives it a meaner streak that contradicts its silly nature and imbalances the whole setup.

That's just my take on comedy.

Then there's offensive humor that you might hear from someone like Louis CK or Jim Jefferies: a build up that focuses on being overtly offensive. You're either there for the ride or the climax, but you're expecting it.

I'm just saying, jokes tend to have a feeling, a tempo if you will. When you're going softly and then suddenly hit a hard note, it can throw people off and mess up the vibe you're trying to set. That's not to say you can't surprise people with a turnaround, but it has to match the pace of the build up.

The same can be said to work in reverse, like the infamous Aristocrats joke. The build up is the joke, the punchline is a statement that flushes the high you have going. Sure you might get a sensible chuckle out of it, but nowhere near what you might have had had the joke ended on a note that was a finale to the fireworks rather than a pop and a fizzle.
