There are only so many things that can be said about a single event without going out of context. There are a very limited number of opinions one can express about an episode. But there's an infinite amount of discussion to be generated once the limits are taken off and you have a subject like "What if Celestia were your mother?" or something.

Sometimes the headcanon is in fact more enjoyable than show canon.
For example, take Prince Blueblood. In the one episode he appears, he's depicted as a shallow shitstain that is utterly incapable of being remotely civil, always expecting everyone to do shit for him. He exists purely to put a damper on Rarity's easy-road hopes to living in high society.
A headcanon for this behavior would be that he was only acting that retarded because he thought Rarity was just trying to hook up with him for the benefits of getting in good with royalty, and, being well aware of this, decided to troll her hard enough to make her abandon the idea altogether.
The headcanon gives a semblance of depth to an otherwise done to death character, and makes his motives more sympathetic. Additionally, it doesn't screw with the moral of the episode at all.
Meaning that the headcanon to the character was preferable to the canon character that was established.
It really isn't an alien concept.
