He's getting an episode with Ember and Thorax, all of his development in the future is going to lean on one or both of those two. Though I wish they were going with something more meaningful than a stock plot. Ember would be the perfect excuse to talk about Spike's parents. She can talk about her dead mom and help Spike find his parents' skeletons or something.

Spike is the most under used, under valued, under appreciated and most shit on character in the series and has been since day one.

Last season was a weird blip where they had room in the scheduled and needed to fill it so Spike was promoted to 'worthy of empathy' status, I assume now they have plenty of Wow: Glimmer, movie shilling and parents to fill the time this season they'll go back to shitting on Spike some more because "he's a smelly boy and stuff".

There is nothing in the show that suggests that hoarding isn't how dragons grow naturally. It's possible that the only reason why dragons in the dragonlands don't explode like Spike did is that there is simply not enough stuff in their wasteland to build a proper hoard very quickly.
