This was the second round of speculation and I thought we were getting one of the most hideous things ever (at this point people had accepted the image in the OP was real but when these were released people speculated that those were just rough templates on which to build these abominations). When people accused this of competing with Monster High I thought they were taking it all the way and changing the visual style.

It was actually kind of a relief when the initial leaked designs turned out to be the style of the final product. They kept this awful promo style for every Equestria Girls following up until Legend of Everfree, though, so we never got totally free of them.

All in all the EqG world and its people aren't meant to mirror us. They're meant to mirror the ponies. And while they did use the word human in as a one line in FG it doesn't change the fact that the characters weren't designed to be us in mind but rather hybrids as the woman that designed the characters said.
On top of that the director of these films even said they don't take place on Earth.
