Also, why is everyone acting like this is a big fucking deal? Her eyes can derp and underp at will, there is no consistency about this. If anything, she's only derping more as she lowers in rank due to frustration, but she still smiles anyway because she's thinking about all the post-race muffins she'll get to eat.

Because the animators (or the writers directing them to do so have been crafting Derpy's backstory across the seasons.

She was the first choice to replace RD in the Equestria Games, and now we know why: she was doing really well in competition as a filly but had to drop out because of progressive amblyopia. As a teen she had surgery either as an attempt to fix it or to keep her from going completely blind.

You're overthinking this. Derpy was used in Rainbow Falls as a joke. She beat Rarity at cart design because it was also a joke. She's a joke character and the writers have absolutely no plans for her outside of one-off gags and the storyboarders just make stuff up as they go along.

/mlp/ is just filled with sad, miserable people who want to project their misery onto joke characters because they don't like the idea of someone having a fun life.
