Here's a thought: if we want to make a huge-ass piece of art, we could do it really far away where the cooldown is like 5 or 10 minutes.

At that range you don't need to sit in front of the canvas all the time, you can e.g. watch some videos/movies and check back every time the notification for the pixel pops up. It will take a while, but we have the autism, we can easily do it (after all, most of us have already been at this for several days, for significant amounts of time).

The advantages to this is that any would-be raiders would also need to get in for the long haul if they hope to do any kind of damage whatsoever, and the complete lack of instant gratification would drive almost all of them away. It's one thing to place a pixel every minute and watch as they get cleaned up after you, while you try new things and try subtle variations, watching the artists struggle to figure out what you changed and how you fixed it. It's a much more boring experience to place a pixel, see it get fixed relatively quickly, and then have to wait for 9 more minutes before getting a chance to try it again.

We could always place a banner near the centre with coordinates, to direct people to take a look. That would get vandalised, sure, but it's much easier to keep some black block letters and a colourful but straightforward patten clean, than a huge, complex, shaded art piece.

I'd be up for spending every evening for a couple weeks checking back every 10 minutes to draw a large-scale portrait of the royal sisters, or the /mlp/ flag, or an IWTCIRD, or a giant horse pussy (or marecock), or all of those at once.

A line could be a good idea, but if we're like 20k pixels away it might take a long time. A sign giving coords would be better I think - with 20,000 pixels (the equivalent of a super-thin line nobody will notice) we can make a pretty big and flashy sign.

It was already explained like three times: to make the timer longer, which will deter raiders. If we could somehow protect our art with a 7-minute timeout and have it be in the center, that would be fantastic. Unfortunately we have to stick it really far away, but the proposed idea (that everyone seems to like) is to make up for that by advertising our art near the center, with a simple and easy-to-repair sign.


Anyway, I did some searching, and there really is a catastrophic lack of royal sister pixel art. derpibooru.org/1158417 is basically the only thing I found, and it's really too small.

We could try searching for good pixel art of Luna and Celestia separately, but the general style and size would both have to match AND they'd both need to be easily convertible to 16 colours, which might be hard.

Alternatively I found this derpibooru.org/1425270, which looks good but isn't too detailed, and looks like it could work when converted to pixels. I'm gonna give it a try for now, but I'm not promising any stellar results. If an arty anon wants to lend a hand, that'd be great. Or if anyone finds other good sister pictures that seem like they'd work well in pixels, post them up for consideration.

Because converting things usually makes them look bad, I decided to try to do it manually. Here's a VERY rough beginning which took me about 20 minutes to get done.

I should mention a lot of areas aren't properly pixel-aligned, because that will take even more work and I wanted to get a prototype out for judgement. The bottom of the mouth, inner neck curve, and top of the peytral are exactly aligned to the pixels we would draw on the canvas; the rest is "jittery" but drawn by hand.

Not gonna lie, that's noisy as fuck and kinda shit. It really almost looks good, but there's too many random pixels everywhere.

I feel like if someone cleaned that up by hand, it would look a lot better. But then again, it would lose most of the AA and details. There's probably a balance to strike there or something.

I think the idea was that you'd spend most of your time doing whatever, and only switch back to the tab when placing a pixel. Whereas with Fluttershy, since you'd get like 40 seconds between pixels, there wasn't much time to really start doing anything - you'd be switching back and forth constantly, making Fluttershy really the main and only thing to focus on. With the longer timer, the canvas will instead be a periodic background distraction and you can focus on whatever other shit you want.

So you'd probably spend, very very conservatively, 1/5th of the time not doing other things (which allows 1.5 minutes to notice the new pixel notification, tab out to the browser, consult the templace, place the pixel, tab back out to whatever you were doing, and get back into the swing of things there - e.g. rewing a video 5 seconds to get an uninterrupted experience. 1.5 minutes is pretty generous for that I feel). Then, assuming Fluttershy actually took 250 straight man-hours to complete, this one will take something along the lines of 800 "equivalent man-hours" (taking into account the time that WON'T be spent drawing pixels). Flutters was completed in about 2.5 days, so using only the most conservative estimates everywhere, we get a timescale of 10 equivalent days of work.

Now of course the ability to do other things doesn't magically stretch the free time available for people, but what it does to is allow them to spend basically all their free time doing this without getting too burnt out or seeking distractions and taking breaks. So something along the lines of ~30 days to complete the project doesn't seem unrealistic to me.

Tl;dr - should take about a month of dedicated work. By all means a big project, but doable. However, the fact that it will take this long means that the choice of art and quality of template matter a lot - we won't be able to make big changes later on, and abandoning it will result in a LOT of time being wasted.

The problem with approaches that involve using automated tools and filters is that they usually try to match the original as closely as possible. This isn't what we want. Twilight would look better if she was all purple, but lacked some shading details, than right now where she just looks like she rubbed her face and ears in shit. Luna looks like a creature of nightmares, whereas plain dark-purple would look a lot better.

If you assume that people have shit to do in their lives, and those 10 people are only meeting the deadline 1/3 of each day, it will take nearly 50 days before being complete. It would be amazing if this fad doesn't pass by that time.

You know, I'm thinking... Luna needs quite a lot of shades of dark blue. We only have one that really fits, then we've got a much lighter teal and some very saturated purple, so most pictures of Luna will have trouble getting the main, eye, coat, and shading colours right.

Some unshaded picture with an S1-coloured lighter mane would work much better. But the mandatory lack of shading will mean that as a whole it will look a lot worse.

We might have to end up dropping Luna entirely from the art, which makes me very sad.

Here's a ffmpeg command for converting stuff to the palette, if you want to quickly try stuff and see.

IMO Celestia doesn't need any cleanup (aside from few occasional pixels in the mane), and yeah, about Luna I do agree, but as anon >>30009698 nicely put it, we've only got so many shades of blue and purple. Before I posted initial version I played around with making Luna pitch black and with making her blue-purple mix, but then her hair would have to be one shade lighter, or else it would be indistinguishable from coat.
