I was always saying that she was shit right after "When Pinkie Pie Knows" was released. Book shills kept defending her but she simply CAN"T write for the tv show. She doesn't get the pace and episode construction of a 20 minute aniamtion. All of her stories are usually 100 pages long so she never bothers with jokes or really any excited stuff, just very bland slice of life stories. She's the opposite of Confalone who tries to fill 20 minutes with as many FEELS and JOKES as possible. Berrow was a mistake. Dusedau tier.

I can appreciate an episode where something happens instead of repeating the same thing over and over and then fixing the """"""problem"""""" in a way that could've been applied right from the very start. Fluttershy's friends didn't need to bring literally whos at all, they ended building the thing without any experts at all. Fluttershy throughout the seasons has always been a character with two traits, being shy and having a love of animals. Every single fucking Fluttershy episode was about her shyness and the last time we got a real solo Fluttershy and animals episode was in season 1 with A Bird in The Hoof. The Breezies episode missed the mark by making the animals talk which the exact opposite of why a shy person is depicted to like animals. This episode is perfect from a conceptial standpoint. Fluttershy fulfills a very realistic goal of hers that relates to animals. There's tons of continuity, understanding of all the characters, and it was something that was sure to add a lot of value to the show. Quite simply this episode was exactly what the show needed. However, it's clear they had no idea how to actually make an interesting conflict. This lead to an incredibly shallow and uninteresting experience. The whole time I was saying Fluttershy is doing everything right, it's the experts who are wrong. They really should have figured out a way to make it so Fluttershy was in the wrong in this episode at some point. She never made any mistakes whatsoever and it just breezed it through with no drama.

It's clear that Berrow knows her shit and knows the characters well, but she just failed at storytelling in general. Which is strange since I thought she did a great job with The One Where Pinkie Knows since that had a great structure with the whole thing about the side characters knowing about the scavenger hunt being the ones who remind Pinkie about the secret. This episode was just a pure failure in execution of such a great premise.

The idea was good and it does fit Fluttershy. If anything, it's the perfect thing for her. But it's presented in the episode in a way that it didn't even cross her mind before. Like if she never stumbled upon the clinic being full she wouldn't have the need to build it. It was pretty much invented for this episode.
Not to mention that running a sanctuary isn't something you just do out of nowhere. It's a lot more time consuming that just keeping an eye on a few animals. If this will factor into future episode it would be nice, and so far in S7 there's good continuity so I hope it won't be dropped and never mentioned again. After this whole thing was raised just so we can have this episode I really hope it won't just go away like nothing every happened.

It's just that Larson both watched the show and wrote good episodes and this gives the impression that it's what it takes. Not everyone is like him.

Here's my take on it:

+pacing never felt rushed
+stellar ending
+callbacks
+characters don't feel flanderized and they all say something and are useful somehow
+lots of animation and moving eyecandy

-conflict ended half way
-has a tendency to explain everything
-not funny
-not truly S1 because it lacks banter, but instead has generic encouragement, which arguably fits a 'fluttershy is finally assertive rah rah team' episode but makes the m6 parts feel like there's no real character

I know General Motors Wheelbarrow can write decent comedy. She wrote "The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows" after all. Was the lack of any because it was a Fluttershy episode? Seems like the episode was more to show off the amount of different, moving puppets the animators did than to show off the writing.

It just felt very dry. Especially after yesterday. I absolutely love calm SoL episodes but somehow it didn't quite sit with me. It almost seemed like there should actually be conflict there, but it's taken away to "not overdo it" maybe?
It's nice that it she can finally be assertive without being a cunt. And it IS progressing her. But I feel like it was a bit forced. If this was a situation that was mentioned in the past as something Fluttershy can't deal with and now she can because she's different now (in a good way), this would be brilliant.
But the sanctuary idea wasn't something she couldn't do before. Actually, the experts weren't needed at all. M6 could've built this shit a long time ago if Fluttershy had such an idea. Not to mention Fluttershy's idea itself was "just forest with things".

You know, halfway through I thought that it's gonna be something like "It doesn't matter what the sanctuary looks like, what matters is that Fluttershy is there". She is ultimately what makes the sanctuary work, any place can serve this purpose as long as she is involved. Like in the clinic, she organised it all and animals all had their place without getting in each other's way. This is what she does. I dunno if that would've been better for a plot but it seemed like they were kinda going for it but steered away from it later. Instead, Fluttershy is just right about everything and there's no conflict to be resolved, she was always right and the experts were in the wrong right from the start.
