Being stuck in Aussie land makes watching this episode difficult but it was worth it.

I really got annoyed by pinkie but I feel that was the point. Making maud and glimmer friends seemed weird at first but it really made sense with the way they presented it. The further characterization of both maud and glimmer also was a lot of fun, especially glimmer and her kites. At first it seemed random but it was so cute seeing her have so much fun just flying a kite. As a whole this season has started out great, I just hope it keeps staying that way.

To be honest I've been enjoying the fuck out of the season, despite my reservations for Starlight last season.

All of the interactions that Starlight has been having feel way more natural than the main six have been doing. Like this episode with Maud, that's what people do when they're trying to be friends. Discuss likes, dislikes, things they have in common. You search for common ground and just let it grow naturally and that's what it felt like they were doing.

Also I enjoy Starlight but not more than the main cast. Starlight and her friends having 3-4 episodes in a season is okay, but I'd be against more than that, seeing how we still have main cast pairs unused or very rarely used.
They don't need a new main cast, and Hasbro will never let them get rid of Twilight and friends since they have brand recognition. Trying to wedge in another major group of ponies wouldn't go well, having them in reserve for a couple of episodes like the CMC is more than enough.

Old writers are gone, new writers are out of ideas for the manesix and prefer to work with newer, less fleshed-out characters. Without something to shake up the format, we'll get even more awkward oneshots and older characters sacrificed at the expense of new ones.

Really, the show isn't suited for a decade long chaarcter arc in is current format.
As long as they refuse to makea new generation with new main characters to explore, expanding the side characters (Maud, Big Mac, CMC, Glimmer, Trixie,...) is a much preferrable option to repeating the same episodes from years ago or, worse, flanderizing the characters to make them fit any number of cliche storylines that have absolutely no connection to them.

I would be in favor of a new generation though, as long as they plan it out well and make a clean break with the existing show. After the movie would be a good time to do this. It could be like Digimon's second series, with the old characters in the background and occasionally showing up to help out and stuff.

I just dislike this trend of magical power-creep with new foreground ponies, along with an expanding cast of oneshot characters that we only see for like one episode (RIP Little Strongheart). Plus the major transformation-y changes they've made over the years (Twilicorn and now the changedlings) go over like lead balloons to a lot of people.
