Oh most definitely. Hell I felt my interest in the show shrivel up after the S5 finale because I expected one and was let down.
The thing I've since realized: Tirek was the culmination of 4 seasons' worth of build-up. Discord, the Elements, the Princesses, that lit Cerberus shout-out, Twilight's final glorious actualization as Friendship swami, you couldn't just trot out something that satisfying every single season thereafter. So, they went back to basics and started slowly building again. The mane six have grown up, lets focus on new characters that could use some help.
Everybody's going mental in the Grogar thread, but part of me doesn't want him to show up this season. I kinda want him to be saved for Act 4 like Tirek was, to build hype even more and make whatever happens all the sweeter for the wait.

Nah, lazers are pretty boring and you can't really have high stakes like character's life in a show like this. I'd rather they not try at all. Not to mention it attracts the crowd that sees validation of their pony obsession in these episodes.
