ITT: reading, not writing, fond remembrance of /mlpol/, the relative gayness of futa, terrible premises, ideas that have gone nowhere, international politics, alternate universes, a run-down of the history of ponyfics, why are fads a thing?, Displaced fics, cancerous first stories, >tfw no new good stories, the right way of writing Pinkie Pie, the mechanics of time travel and FTL spacefaring, and a bunch of other stuff, I'unno. The thread lasted over two weeks.

Tired of bland premises that get stretched over dozens of chapters? Can't stomach another promising story go down the gutter? Well, we've compiled the best of the worst in order to bring you our absolute average!

Well played.

The crux of the matter is, this is a dying fandom.

Online friends were sending me links to assorted things at places like FIMfiction that they thought were good. At one point I had over a hundred browser tabs open.

I'm catching up now, despite longer hours at work and less free time.

So many of the fan writers and artists have latched onto Gravity Falls or Steven Universe as "the new hotness." Things come and go, I guess--some of my favorite horsewords were written by names I recognized from Evangelion fics. That's just how it is.

>>
>>29888432
Don't forget eye color, age, accessories and bearing. But you don't necessarily have to throw in all of those; certainly not in one big dump.

As a reader, I tend to get annoyed with description for the sake of description.
>>
>>29888432
>gender
That should go without saying with the dialogue. Even so, it's not as if that can be treated as a mystery for long. Unless you're writing about a qt trap.

>cutie mark
Unless the character's cutie mark plays a role in the story, you can get away with not mentioning what it is.

>coloration, size, mane style
You can go into detail if you wan, but characters should have more depth beyond their appearance.Otherwise you end up with superspecial, multicoloured, alicorn oc's with no real personality.

>species
This should be made clear by how the character acts. If they're flying, then they're obviously a pegasus, have them do magic if they're an unicorn, and they should grovel in the presence of others if they're earth ponies.
>>
I do hope that Knighty or whoever lauches a general fanfiction site. Not changing Fimfiction to a general site, but a new site entirely. I've been on all the big fanfic sites and Fimfiction is by far the best.
>>
>>29889880

Good job.

Fimfiction will still last for a while, and after then, it'll last as an archive. One that hopefully won't get set on fire.

>>29883609
>dying fandom
Dying implies it will at some point actually die. To borrow a business term, I'd say it's "maturing" (reaching the point where growth ceases and shrinks into a reliable, but smaller, market). The bandwageners have mostly left, the internet is well aware of pone and mostly gotten over it, and (most importantly) most of the remaining fans have IRL shit to do now that they aren't in high school and have to decide how much time to dump into multicolored horses.

The Lion King's section of fanfic.net had about ten fics a day posted--and this was six years after the last bit of official content was released and well over a decade after the "golden age." The fandom will never really die, even long after Gen 4 wraps up.

My weird bat pony clopfic. First chapter introduces the main character and her physical appearance. Since it's a clopfic, there's more info than I'd usually give (specific age, cutie mark, etc.) since I wanted the reader to have a decent idea of what she looks like.

I tried to blend the information into the scene as best as I could--character introductions are always challenging as they can act as expo dumps to a large degree, so trying to naturally blend them in with the scene is important.

I have been reading less and less horse fanfiction as of late. It's a combination of reading more important works and waiting for half-read ones to finish (if they ever will).
I really should just be writing my own instead of deliberating. I might end up publishing long after the heat death of this fandom at my current rate.

I'm looking for one I read a few years back, that I'd like to reread, but I think it may not have actually been on FIMfic, but on one of the defunct horsewords sites. If so, it may be gone forever.

I can't recall any specific passages or bits of dialogue to google, nor a title.
>>
>>29893634
Unfortunately, I can't find what I previously read; so take it with some skepticism.

>>29893890

>>
Was Pinkie Pie out of character in Filli Vanilli?
>>
>>29893490
I might have suggested One Terrible Writer if they were still around.

Who was the guy who wrote second-person "romance" fics that always ended with no sex and the protagonist humiliated; e.g. being arrested for accidentally exposing the CMC to a porn movie starring his dad?

I haven't read anything by Tingle.
>>
>>29894289
There used to be one called Equestria After Dark, that was--well, it should be obvious, with a name like that, shouldn't it?

The one I was looking for was a pretty well written, romantic Celestia clop story. (actually mostly about her switching to human form to visit our world--or a world much like it--to go on vacation in Hawaii and falling in love).

This would have been around 2013.
>>
>>29894309
By that point she had no character left to be taken out of.
>>
>>29894386
Ah, that one. I wasn't counting it as a horsewords site in the same sense as Fimfiction and [E]PFA. I've fantasized about going through the site via Wayback and collecting all the stories still retrievable, but I haven't even got far trying to do the same with the Clopfic Directory.

I read 'Heart of an Author' once again, hoping to get through the last third this time, but I ended up dropping it altogether once again.

It's odd, this is my third time, and I can't make myself even finish chapter 20.
>>
>>29894461
I haven't had much luck with the Wayback Machine when it comes to fic. A lot of fic sites have a robots.txt file preventing webspiders from looking at them, so when they go, they're gone.
>>
So I wrote the first chapter of a short-ish story and would like someone to look it over and tell me if it's worth continuing or if I'm just shit.
But I don't want my google account to have any trace of this shit on it, so I can't really put it into google docs. What would you suggest I use? Or should I just ask around fimfiction's IRC or sometihng

Keeping it Simple.
After all this time, I still find the somewhat downer tale of a farmer finding his place in the world one of the most endearing tales I've found in this fandom.
>>
>>29895630
Overall, I liked the intro and first couple of paragraphs, but it soon devolves into dialogue -> scene description -> more dialogue -> more scene descriptions, and there's little in terms of character thoughts, nor do you dwell in their actions. That makes the whole story feel bland.

As for the plot itself... Well, it's not outright terrible, but I don't see what the overall story is suppposed to be beyond OC meets Pinkie Pie.

>Why do you keep trying? (And apparently restarting at the beginning on top of that?)
Well, I saw it recommended here and I didn't notice the Crossover tag, so I just added it to my RL list and then downloaded the epub file to read on the go. I was thoroughly engaged for the first 18 or so chapters, and immensely thrilled to have found a somewhat decent mystery fic. Then the chapter where the reveal happens happened and it killed my investment in the story. Honestly it went from 100 to 0 in the span of a few paragraphs. I tried to keep going, but I didn't last too long.

So, that was it. I dropped the story withoug looking back.

Sometime later, I remembered just how good the first two thirds were and thought I should give it another chance. Maybe knowing what was coming would make me get mentally ready for it and I could see how it ends. But then I reached chapter 20 again and had to drop it halfway there. I couldn't even finish it.

I thought that would be it. I had seen what the story was offering me and I just wasn't interested.

Then, a few threads ago, some Anon brought it up again and I warned him not to read it. And then I remembered that the last four times I found a story that disappointed me to that degree I ended up writing an autistically detailed rant about why I got so worked up over fictional stories about fictional little horses and that helped me move on, so I decided to read it again to do that.

Once again, I made it to chapter 20 and I just couldn't go on. I wanted nothing to do with the last third of the story. I simply made up an ending in my mind and lived with that.

So, I'm probably going to do one of those long-winded argumentative whining pieces about Heart of an Author later this month.

Because seriously, fuck that story.

Glanced through If Only, If Only (https://www.fimfiction.net/story/369155/if-only-if-only). Felt really rushed, especially the ending, like he took the plot to a 40k fic and compressed into oneshot size.

I've been trying to get into Daring Do and the Lost Tome of Shadows (https://www.fimfiction.net/story/241758/daring-do-and-the-lost-tome-of-shadows) because I love the idea of Twilight being behind the grand evil plan of an adventure fic, but the whole premise is just leaving a bad taste in my mouth. AJ and Dash act really weird, almost like they're children with overactive imaginations instead of young adults, and Twilight's just spitting out holodeck shit right next to Ponyville, which is hitting my suspension of disbelief fiercely.

It doesn't help Dash and AJ are RPing the whole time. Probably going to end up dropping it if I can't get absorbed the next time I try reading it.

Jesus Christ is it hard trying to read something with all those editing notes. Left some stuff. You should ignore the other guys after paragraph formatting suggestion unless you plan on doing a PDF or straight up Gdocs, since that kind of stuff wont transition to Fimfiction or Fanfic.net.

As for the fic itself. It seemed nice. There were some oddities, like the hangover comment or some word phrasing, but it's nothing some polishing wouldn't fix. Overall, Pinkie seemed decently written.

It definitely feels kind of boring, though. I don't really have any interest or investment in the guy since it starts with plunking him down in the cave. As an intro chapter it really doesn't work well.

If the fic's focusing on the OC than developing him and making the audience care about him is incredibly important. Why care about him when they can just read about the M6 they already have investment in? So the first chapter should really all be about introducing the reader to the character, his personality, etc. (and maybe setting up the plot depending on the type of story). Then you can get into situational stuff like the cave and Pinkie interaction.

I'd recommend focusing the first chapter on that party. Then you can develop him and his friends, have some fun SoL shit, and if you're lucky maybe get the reader to care enough to keep reading.

I thought the traditional advice was that a story shouldn't revolve around an original character; which is different from his just happening to be the protagonist.
>>
>>29897837
This sounds like garbled advice. If a character is the protagonist, the story is going to revolve around them. If it doesn't, the reader is going to wonder why this character was chosen to hold the narrative focus when they aren't that pertinent to the story.

OC main characters aren't Mary Sues. OC main characters who are perfect at practically everything and show up the main cast with their skills and who are automatically beloved by the main cast for no real reason are Mary Sues.

Because the story is happening to them. That doesn't mean they have to be super special and interesting outside the scope of the story.

>OC main characters aren't Mary Sues. OC main characters who are perfect at practically everything and show up the main cast with their skills and who are automatically beloved by the main cast for no real reason are Mary Sues.
Sounds like the advice that leads to people giving their OCs meaningless "flaws", making them terrible at everything and making the main cast hate them for no reason, while not fixing the fundamental issue of the story revolving around them without justification.

I'm now rewriting everything. Even the idea is better. It includes the same pegasus as before, but this time also Princess Luna and some of her shenanigans. I'm not sure I want to explain the plot like that, I feel like that'd ruin it. Somehow. I doubt anyone cares anyways.

Writing this all out is going to take a while.

Started it like 5 years ago... yeesh
>>
>>29902532
Yeah. It's second person, and strictly first draft quality, made up on the spot and typed right into the new-post windows.

...if it helps at all, the setting is not Equestria as such; it's a little pocket universe/dreamscape thingy that Celestia uses as a private rumpus room when certain natural urges start getting the better of her and she feels the need for a certain kind of companionship, if you follow my meaning here, and I'm quite sure you do. The distinction is, if this is the crux of the matter for you, that the human viewpoint character isn't interacting with the Mane 6, or looky-looing at Ponyville. He's just banging Best Princess like a Buddy Rich drum solo.
>>
>>29902513

I liked the Iron Hearts series by SFAccountant. Just be aware that it starts off as a comic 40k/Pony crossover, tone-wise, but by the fourth and fifth books it's mostly 40k with a few pony characters thrown in.

Why's the reader going to want to read that? If it's really focusing on him, you have to get the reader invested in him. Otherwise, they'll be bored after a chapter and Alt+Left Arrow back to find another fic.

You don't "shill" him, you show him to the reader. Show his personality, his character traits, perhaps some flaws. That's why you should start with the SoL party--it gives you a chance to really flesh the guy out under regular circumstances right at the start (plus set up the opening of the plot and his friends).

Third movie's shit because it took all the seriousness and grandiosity and turned it into a bunch of shitty jokes for Timon and Pumbaa. Simba's Pride is arguably the best made for TV sequel Disney did, but suffered because of being a made for TV sequel to the GOAT Disney Renaissance film.

The writing I've seen that impresses me the most recently is--well, Elegan/tg/entlemen will know what I'm talking about.

There's a pen-and-paper horror/conspiracy RPG called "Delta Green." I personally think they've got some of the best writers in the business working for them. It's grimdark as FUCK, though.
>>
>>29908774
I've been wanting to try Delta Green, but there's no interest in it around me, so I've just been putting it off. Going to read it once I have more available time.

Wonder how many people in the thread, if any, are into /tg/ stuff.
I just returned from my weekly GURPS session.
>>
>>29908948
Admittedly, in a Lovecraftian horror RPG, where total party kills are the normal ending for the evening's play... well, that's not gonna be to everyone's taste.

Story idea: blah blah interuniversal portal, blah blah magic ponies come to visit modern-day Earth. How does Delta Green react? Being paranoid sumbitches who see the hand of Nyarlathotep everywhere, I'm pretty sure they're gonna lose their shit completely and start doing kuh-razy stuff.

Or maybe Equestria exists somewhere in the vast uncharted regions of Lovecraft's Dreamlands, and Delta Green anticipated this, and is intrigued with the idea of controllable, stable gateways into the Dreamlands, whether for operational use or as a final bolthole, a final refuge for a remnant of humanity in the End Times. Note that in both cases the Princesses aren't going to be the least bit happy with DG--either they're kidnapping and vivisecting and killing ponies because they think they're Mi-Go biopuppets, or heavily armed DG strike teams are taking shortcuts through Equestria to go on missions--and the survivors are coming back leading a horde of gugs and ghasts, who are not averse to adding human, or pony, to their diet. Celly is gonna be PISSED. And Luna is supposed to guard ponies' dreams, but here come these humans, chased by a horde of nightmare monsters that have followed them into the waking world. A stern talking-to isn't going to cover it.
>>
I read Empty Horizons straight through. I gotta say its one of the better examples on how to write Rarity. Everything else has been alright, and thankfully spreads its worldbuilding pretty evenly. Can't really say I'm fan of the stakes its trying to build up. Its mostly been "that thing left behind is now evil/corrupt," and I'm kinda bored of it. The characters are carrying it for me mostly.

If the story's about an OC, the audience needs to give a fuck about the OC. You can't do that if the character has no development--especially at the start of the fic when readers are wondering "why should I read about this guy and not the M6".

I don't think the echo thing works that well. It feels really unnecessary and doesn't really add anything. Perhaps I missed it, but I don't recall seeing an actual description of what Dawn looks like, only that he has wings. Also remember to indicate new paragraphs somehow, either through indentation or a blank line in between each new paragraph.

>not including a party scene to start it off
Suit yourself. It's going to be challenging getting readers into the story with only the implied promise that the OC will develop and his characterization solidify as things go on.

>Why
As I've said previously, an introductory chapter/scene where the audience gets to know the OC that will be driving the story helps to make the audience care more about him and whatever situations he might encounter.

Readers don't care about characters they don't know--hence why redshirts and mooks can be killed by the dozens without much more than a shrug by most people. By going right into the main plot without the reader knowing who the protag is, you risk the reader not caring about him and his story.

As it stands, you'll hopefully develop him as the story goes on and those that do end up reading it will hopefully come to care about him, but without laying the foundation first, it's unlikely many people will.

Plus, by writing an intro scene where the reader gets to know him, you do too in a way. You'd have to write how he normally acts, thinks, talks, etc. and that can prove invaluable as you think up the various situations and interactions he's going to have as the story progresses.

Something to explain why Twiggles' personality changes so much from episode to episode. Sometimes, especially in season 1, she's Twilight Snarkle, deadpan sarcastic straight-man to a crazy world, and a lot saner and more stable and mature than most of the cast. Sometimes she's Twilight Snapple, going batshit about being late writing a letter to the Princess and willing to cast a hideous, brain-raping mind-control spell on a doll and toss it into a crowd, causing a riot, just to create a problem to write about. How and why does she switch back and forth between Daria Morgendorfer in hoers form and, and--I am struggling to think of another fictional character who's barely even capable of functioning, and in such a constant state of being on the verge of a complete nervous breakdown over absolutely nothing. Twilight Snarkle is believable as the personal protege of a living queen-goddess. Twilight Snapple isn't. One of these two very different characters, who look the same and share a name, was a reasonable choice for apotheosis. The other is a menace to her entire society even with baseline unicorn magic, much less the package she got with wings. Celestia's reasoning here is inexplicable.

Are there two Purplesmarts, who from time to time swap out? And has the sane one been on vacation since season 3?

How is the reader supposed to visualize a character that's never described? It's like the "standing and talking in a white void" issue, only it's much worse since the lack of detail is over the very protagonist of the story.

That was my fuck-up. I initially had a paragraph where the MC was described, but it got deleted among some other stuff that didn't feel like it fit in. It wasn't my intention to leave him as a completely blank slate but somehow didn't think of that in the middle of all the revisions.

I have no words.

I have spent the last week thinking hard about a story my muse wants me to write, but which I've decided not to. It would have been a technicolor-horses-visit-the-real-world thing set in a bankrupt, balkanized US that's having a civil war.

I have figured out that every time I see things like that, and hear about more organized violence in American politics--well, those of you living outside the US may not care, and I apologize. I'm not trying to hijack the thread. I know this isn't /pol/. It's just that over the last several years I've seen an increasing trend of implicit and explicit threats of violence made, from people on the extremes of both ends of the political spectrum in the US. It fills me with despair. My muse feeds on that and wants me to write a story that is, among other things, a guided tour of a setting where all the crazies who want "revolution" got their wish. It's Somalia, a continent wide, and my muse wants to wallow in it and show ponies (and humans too) dying in hideous ways, to random roadside bombs and sniper attacks by a hundred groups of armed crazies, and rub the reader's nose in it. It would have come out looking like something that was screamed onto the screen and no one would have finished the first chapter.

Which is illogical, and to my way of thinking isn't a justifiable purpose for art. I want to write things that will speak to the better aspects of our nature, not take the cheap route to visceral horror that no one's going to enjoy.

That looks like CGI, made with one of those 3D art programs. It also looks the way a lot of art created with those programs does--all the characters look like nightmarish plastic dolls, just human enough for the little bit of wrongness to be horrifying. "Uncanny Valley" is the term, I think.

I suspect maybe not. Drawing 3D human or human-ish figures with CGI, or even with extremely detailed painting, is hard. Not many artists can avoid the Uncanny Valley of hideous plastic-faced robots with dead empty soulless eyes that CGI so often produces.

The faces don't even have to be especially human. Pic related. The detailed eyes in a nearly featureless, barely-3D face make Trixie here look like something that wants to come through the screen and eat your soul.

Is it 'easy' to get featured?
I mean, wtf, I got two fics in the featured box and posted them both these lasts 48h
When I see some people going full autismo on some fics, write like 40k words and are obviously better than me but never get there?
I mean, they're not fetish fuel and wish fulfillment fics, can't really compare both genres, but still.
I don't know how to take it, is this a mod liking my shit? View counts? Like/dislike ratio?
How does it work?
no bully
>>
>>29949598

Getting into the feature box isn't particularly difficult, though even if you follow these guides, it's not guaranteed. Just be aware that the feature box isn't a measure of a fic's quality, but rather how well it's able to appeal to large numbers of people just enough for them to want to consume it. It's like TV ratings; the best shows often aren't the ones that the most people watch each week.

So with that in mind, here's how you get in the feature box.

1) Write a one-shot. People are less likely to check out incomplete fics than complete ones, and are less likely to pick up 50k words on a whim than they are 5k words.

2) Spam any appropriate groups. Don't put your rarijack fic in the Twilestia group, go ahead and put it in the rarijack group(s), the shippers groups, the rarity and AJ groups, maybe a hearts and hooves group if its out there... search around and find relevant places to add it.
---a) Related: do this right away. The FB is heavily weighted towards new fics and recent views, so you want to get readers ASAP, rather than have them trickle in later.

3) Make your subject matter either highly relatable, or highly appealing to a motivated niche.
---a) For the former, that generally means SoL and/or comedy. Use at least one popular character prominently, and make sure your story has an easily identifiable hook that can be summed up in a single sentence.
---b) For the latter, we're mostly talking niche porn and/or shipping. Pick a popular ship, pick a specific fetish (either/or), and give that subset of reader exactly what they want.
>>
>>29951232

4) Actually put some thought into your short description. If you half-ass it, people will assume you half-assed your whole story.

5) Don't play coy with your description. Tell the reader what's in your story, and don't worry too much about spoilers. The better an idea you give the reader of what you've written, the more likely they are to take a glance; obtuse may sometimes make for a better reading experience, but it won't help you grow an audience.

6) Find good cover art; derpibooru is full of pictures you can steal. Make sure it's bright and eye-catching, and that it still reads well when shrunk down to thumbnail size.

7) Network a little. The easiest way to do this is to ask one or more people with a bunch of followers to pre-read for you, then see if you can get them to blog about your fic to their followers. Also, if you can get on EqD, try to time your fimfic release to coincide with your EqD release, so that those extra readers will boost your heat. Any other website you can crosspost to to get a few extra eyes won't hurt either; just remember 2a, and get those links out as quick after publishing as possible.

8) Finally: do this a bunch. Post a new story every couple of weeks, and/or start using fimfic blogs to post actual interesting content on a regular basis. The best way to get followers is to consistently produce content, so if you CONSISTENTLY put stuff out that isn't total ass (and follow the other guidelines), you'll accumulate a decent number of followers relatively quickly. And once you've gotten a bunch of followers, getting into the feature box is easy; all you have to do is publish your next SoL/Comedy oneshot (or piece of fetish porn) and your built-in audience will do all the work for you.

Good luck on your quest to get horsefamous, I hope it's every bit as fulfilling as you surely imagine it will be.

Combination of factors:
>timing
>genre
>length
>not shitty title/synopsis/cover art

In general, the easiest way to get featured is by writing a story that's easy on readers. Something short, so they can quickly read it without debating whether it's worth sinking time into; lighthearted, so they know when they reach the end they'll walk away with a smile (and upvote); and competently done (not necessarily well done, just good enough that it doesn't make them stop reading), since walls of text, terrible grammar, or a really shitty plot will sink readers no matter if the other factors are checked off.

>How does it work?
The exact algorithm remains a mystery since Knighty's paranoid about people trying to rig things, but it appear to rely on "heat" (how popular [upvotes, views, comments, etc.] a story/chapter is) and time (how long the story/chapter's been published). You have about 12 hours or so to get it "hot" enough to be featured, otherwise it'll be too old and slip into the abyss.

Downvotes don't appear to factor in much--hence why controversial fics (abortion, rape, TCB) get featured a lot. They have a ton of comments and views and that's most of what matters.

To the best of my knowledge, staff can't influence a fic's chances of being featured. Although that'd be one hell of a shitstorm if it was revealed they can.

And then there's Fall of Fallout Equestria, in which caribou rape, torture, and murder a lot of ponies, then get raped by hideous radioactive mutants, and then everybody dies, slowly and horribly. Depends on the plot and genre. A mystery for example would be a terrible story to be open ended, since the whole point is the reader trying to piece things together with the story ultimately revealing the correct answer.

>7dsj, book 4, chapter 24
Reminder: the 8M8 are at some resort near LA, nearly all the SIRENs except the Dazzlings are evil now, and Divine Right's ritual is in two days.

Drama happens. Twiggles is super rude to Sunset, so she teleports to a rock in the middle of the ocean to cry. The M5 are all huge bitches because they think Twilight bullied Sunset into becoming an hero. After 8 pages, Octavia finally asks for Twilight's side of the story. Twilight is mad that Sunset is keeping a secret, so the M5 tell her: Sunset is secretly 30 and a horse. Twilight doesn't believe them because she's dumb.

Now for the good shit. DR wants Sunset (Human Edition) for his ritual, but intel can't decide if she's in Canterlot or LA. He sends the SIRENs to kidnap about 15 different people, on the assumption that at least one will be usable as leverage.

Suddenly, SIREN doorkickers everywhere. They crash Luna's afternoon barbeque, grabbing Celestia, Luna, and Luna's boyfriend Moonshadow, and shooting Celestia's boyfriend Edgelord McWerewolf. They hit Twiggles' house for Twimom, Twidad, Spike, and then Shiny and Cadance's house. They shoot Zephyr Breeze and kidnap Human Edition and her mom. And of course, they hit the resort, grab the 7M7, and shoot about 50 random civilians as some kind of distraction. At this point, the only good guys who aren't dead or in SIREN custody are Sunset and the Dazzlings.

BUT WAIT! Edgelord did not die when he was killed! And being a black-ops badass, he has no trouble killing the last SIREN at Luna's place with Chekhov's gold-plated bastard sword. Naturally, he then spends a while chatting with SIREN HQ on the radio, letting them know he's coming.

BUT WAIT! Zephyr Breeze did not die when he was killed! And being a black-ops badass, he has no trouble killing the last SIREN at Human Edition's place with his hidden revolver. Naturally, he then spends a while chatting with SIREN HQ on the radio, letting them know he's coming.

I brought one of them up in the last thread and it was sufficiently bad to get an "oh god why?" I and my muse have been talking a little more lately and now I think I do know why, but knowing why doesn't make me comfortable with it.

One of the less objectionable things that's come to me is a sort of character piece for Princess Celestia, a little viginette where she talks about her past--her distant past. And maybe more in character for S1 Celestia, who was mysterious and regarded by some to be nigh unto a living goddess, chessmaster, manipulator, and so on. Possibly contradicted by a lot of stuff they've done in the show but to me it feels right for the character.

It's just something that solidified in my head over the past day or so, of Celestia talking about having been born a pegasus and ascending to alicornhood much later. Of being old enough to remember before the Unification of the Tribes. Talking about how she was once the Wise Mare of Witch Mountain, who knew a little magic and a lot of herbal healing lore, and helped deliver foals and gave romantic advice with the same aplomb. Of having been a mercenary in the service of the ruthless Queen Majesty, last of Princess Platinum's line of Unicorn warlords, talking sorrowfully about a stallion she killed in a meaningless battle when she was young, about how his dying eyes still haunt her. Of how this drove her half-mad for years and she for a time lived for a good fight and sought glorious death in battle, and the fearsome reputation she once had as bringer of Queen Majesty's wrath. Of all the death she's seen, and participated in, since then, to build a world where her little ponies can be safe. About how she sometimes wonders if she's worthy of the crown, about how she hopes it all balances out somehow and that on balance she's made a better world.

I know this is all contradicted by her getting one-shotted by Chrysalis, then fretting over Purplesmart like a mother hen. It feels right to me.
>>
>>29971536
She's seen two or three pieces of very strong evidence suggesting that Sunset is not a normal human. For some reason she still believes Sunset's paper-thin excuses, despite being 1000% convinced that Sunset is lying about something big.

Yes, but plausible things?

It is already a bit of a stretch, I guess, when we involve magic talking ponies.

But when human characters are Edgy McEdgelord Former Black Ops, and someone shoots them three times in the back, and other men would have just fallen down and died. But Edgy just does the mash. The Monster Mash.

For a more concrete example, the description of the story makes it sound like there's a lot of gunplay taking place. I suppose it's sorta plausible that one guy, who's really, really good, really skilled, and really cool-headed and doesn't panic when lead starts flying his way, up against a bunch of low-IQ street mooks who are only barely aware of which end of the tube the hot stuff comes out of, just might step out and draw and just John Wick all their asses, one, two, three, no problem. In the real world there are people who are just that good, and in the real world there are people who are hauling around guns they don't even know how to use beyond "yank on trigger and stuff comes flying out the skinny end." Members of group A are only guaranteed to meet members of group B in action movies. And even a member of group A is most likely gonna pause to reflect on the life choices that led him to this point if he finds himself with a few holes punched through his abdomen.

There are hackers out there who are OMG MAD L33T SK1LLZ WORLDS BEST, and there are skriptkiddies who just click on the big shiny button labeled "HACK."

So, okay, you've got this character who is really good, the best in town at what he does. He's the Pro from Dover. Why is he hanging out with talking horses? And does he have any flaws at all, or is he Gary Stu?

tl;dr yeesh
>>
>>29976393
Edgelord going John Wick on some SIRENs is actually not completely awful. It's already been established that he's a huge fuckin' badass, ex special forces, etc, etc. When the SIRENs kick down the door, he manages to block a tranq dart and bash a SIREN's face in with a chair leg before the rest have a chance to react. Maybe not especially realistic, but also not very surprising given the character's history. And he does get BTFO after taking down only the one bad guy, which seems reasonable.

His excuse for not dying, though, is pretty bad. You see, he was playing paintball right before the barbeque, and is still wearing his body armor, which is bulletproof for some reason. Also, upon getting shot, he happens to fall directly into a puddle of spilled wine, which looks enough like blood that the SIRENs (who, let me remind you, are supposed to be top-tier professionals) assume he's dead and don't bother to check for a pulse.

Zephyr's case is much worse. So far he's been consistently portrayed as a bit of a fuck-up, and he basically works as a glorified babysitter. Now suddenly he's taking down highly-trained professionals and saying he used to be on the Army's version of Seal Team Six. This is, to say the least, a little surprising.

The absolute worst part, though, is the way nearly the exact same thing went down at Luna and Solaire's houses.
>SIRENs show up to kidnap some people
>in the process, they shoot Edgelord/Zephyr in the chest/leg
>most SIRENs leave with the hostages, one stays behind to clean up
>cleanup crew is a dumbass and doesn't check that Edgelord is actually dead / Zephyr doesn't have hidden weapons
>Edgelord/Zephyr recovers enough to kill/subdue the cleanup crew with Celestia's sword/a hidden revolver
>Edgelord/Zephyr then has a chat with SIREN HQ by radio, giving up the element of surprise so he can brag about his very particular set of skills

>It's a long story.
We have time. And if anyone asks, just say you're thinking about writing a fanfic about a stalker.
>>
>>29981748
It's kind of hard to explain, and I'm not sure how much I want to tell. There's things to the story that could make him easily identifiable, and the full thing requires a lot of context to understand.

The short version is that I know a guy who knows a guy who knows the guy I'm "stalking", and there's something about this last guy that I find very amusing/interesting. And eventually it became habit.

The slightly longer version is that I have a friend, and that friend knows a guy. Let's call him Adam.
Now, I was checking out some stuff related to Adam (who also doesn't know that I exist, we've never interacted), when I chanced upon some stuff related to someone Adam knows. Let's call this guy Abel.
Abel seems normal at first, and I probably wouldn't have remembered him today if I hadn't seen him posting stuff that related to a another individual. Let's call him Cain.
Now, Cain was a real fucking oddball, into some really weird shit, which seemed like the polar opposite of Abel. I'm drawn to these kinds of individuals and environments, and decided to see if I found anything fun. And I quickly discovered with some certainty (it's totally obvious today, less so at the time), that Cain was Abel's alter ego. There's some additional stuff which made this especially hilarious, but I said I can't go into real detail.

1/2
>>
>>29982076
As I said before, I thought Cain was interesting, and now that I realise that it's Abel I start to follow the guy everywhere, on all forms of social media, and try to map out all his identities. Then, in order to find more hilarious stuff, I find out who his family members are, who his associates are, and what he spends his time doing.
The guy has a tiny internet presence, as in he's someone that someone in his very specific community might know about, so he occasionally appears in places related to that. So I end up watching videos, listening to podcasts, reading articles, just for that sentence or two he's mentioned in, or those ten minutes when he's talking.
I won't say I know everything, but I have a pretty clear idea of who his sphere of associates are, and I already know basic info like a dox.

And that's pretty much what I've been doing, on and off, for a few years. Just observing him. I've kind of grown from laughing at his strangeness (which I still do), to having some sort of fascination or respect, despite his views and interests being contrary to mine.

It sounds more creepy than it is, I never intend to do anything to him. Just observe and enjoy.
Kind of like how people obsess over Chris-Chan, except I don't dislike the guy, and I don't want to interact with him in any way. Besides, I've barely checked in on him since December at this point.

But it sounds really fucking crazy, which is why I can never tell anyone the whole story.

Take some suggestions from the art of moviemaking. There are many ways to start and end a flashback scene, all not too dissimilar from visual mediums but, in short, there should be at least one shared major element between the then and now. Either the flashback's protagonist should be retelling its events in the present, with narration jumping from their monologue to a direct description (change of tense depends on taste), or the recently acquired macguffin currently in the protagonist's possession is featured prominently in the flashback, which details its travels from hand to hand without direct narration.
Basically, there should be a direct link between the past - the flashback - and the present.

>how to transition from the current story into the flashback without being jarring
Something has to TRIGGER the flashback, it can't just happen because you want it to happen.

Say you want your character to think about her childhood and a day she spent with her dad, or whatever. Then something must happen in the present to remind her of her dad. Maybe what's currently happening has some sort of connection with her dad, or maybe the advice he gave her can be applied to her problems; therefore, thinking about that can lead into the flashback organically.

Both of these are essentially the opposite of what I was looking for. Sorry, I should have been more clear: I'm looking for "roguelike guy in Equestria", i.e. a character outfitted in DnD style gear arrives - either as an AiE, or with a named character, or maybe even it would be a ponyfinder character ending up in canon Equestria.

Whereas those two linked are more "ponies in Pathfinder" (i.e. the other way around).

>>
>>29986252
Maybe this?
https://www.fimfiction.net/story/2857/mystaras-little-ponies-friendship-is-adventuring
It places Equestria as just one more country in the Mystara D&D setting. It's not very HiE-like since ponies and humans (and various other intelligent species) have been living side-by-side since basically forever. But the MC (and his buddy) are essentially D&D PCs, and they go on adventures with the M6.

Disregard the "incomplete" tag, I don't know why it's on there. The main story is finished since 2012. I think the only reason it's not marked complete is because the author is still adding side stories as new chapters from time to time.

This thing updated again. Guess it's getting a chapter every Sunday until it's done.

I don't really have anything interesting to say about it. It's supposedly about how Ponk came to realize that she's madly in love with Sunset, but actually seems to consist of Ponk being unbearably emo because she got raped and had an abortion and refuses to talk about it with anyone, not even her loving and supportive father or her aunt and uncle, for some bullshit reason.

If you really want to know more, then I suggest you start at the top of this chapter:

Oh, actually I do have one thing to note: the 7DSJ version of Radiant Hope is in this fic. She's a carbon copy of Summer from the weird AJ side story with the Equestrian doomsday devices and the magic invisible wolf. Both are teenage girls, both want nothing more than to get the fuck out of Hicksville, and both have the same bizarre penchant for propositioning random strangers, even after said strangers make it clear that they are uninterested.

>>
>>29989375
Yeah, the whole thing with the villains influencing everyone in Canterlot really screwed with the tone of the first arc. The next arcs should be better about it. Also, due to the nature of the arc, we didn't get to seem much SunLight romance, which is kinda sad too. I'm looking forward to the rest of the story when he eventually gets back to it. Maybe I'll start reading Across the Shimmering Sea. And I'll probably read Childish Killer when it comes out too.
>>
Uncertain if this is the right place for this. I am looking for two stories I remember reading but can't remember the names of.

The first is a HIE thing. A human gets transported to Equestria with a gun. He doesn't speak the language. First contact goes poorly, with him ending a fugitive. Gilda(? a gryphon at least) is called in to advice ponies on the potential psychology of the human. The human tries to kill himself at one point but fails. Things get better, translation happens.

The second story is by far the stranger. In it twilight is abducted by some mysterious fae things and taken to the elemental plane of books(?). She eventually escapes but is changed into a changeling(Not a mlp changeling more like a changeling the lost changeling). She has fae adventures. Time is spent in the hedge. I think a kitsune may be involved. She gets into a fight with a bunch of fae frog things which glorify losing.
>>
>>29990624
is the first one misunderstandings? think he started out with escaping from a pony circus, saves some rando filly from drowning, shoots a guard and eventually hooks up with a griffon

to be fair theres so many hies that the language barrier is pretty much the only useful clue since that is pretty rare

the summary Part 1 of 2

Bible Black (バイブルブラック Baiburu Burakku?, Bible Black) is the eponymous first OVA adaptation of the video game.

An academy student, Taki Minase, finds a strange book while exploring an abandoned room in the school's basement. With the help of his cousin, he translates the Latin-French writings and finds them to be instructions for dark magic, which is actually a form of Kabbalistic satanism (the translation was not mentioned in the OVA).

Using the magic, Minase is able to make Rika Shiraki love him, as well as help his friend, Ayumi Murai, to get the boy she loves to love her back. Reika Kitami, the school nurse, hears of his magical acts and decides to sway him to her because she needs the book for herself. Twelve years prior, Kitami was used as a sacrifice for the previous Witchcraft Club and only survived after making a deal with Satan. She now needs a virgin girl to act as a vessel for her reincarnation as the life that Satan has given her is running out. Kaori Saeki, the head of the new Witchcraft Club, also notes Minase's magic acts and persuades him to come to one of her meetings with the book. After being possessed by a lesser demon, he brings Kitami with him and she takes over the Witchcraft Club.

Kitami holds private counseling sessions for girls, trying to find the virgin she needs. She reveals to Minase that the two girls she has had her eyes on were Shiraki and Minase's childhood friend, Kurumi Imari. However, since Shiraki is no longer a virgin (thanks to Minase), Kitami pursues Imari, who has been missing school recently after walking in on Minase and Shiraki during intercourse. Kitami also regularly kidnaps the art teacher, Hiroko Takashiro, and performs sexual tortures on her after finding out that Takashiro was the head of the Witchcraft Club that had sacrificed her, even though Takashiro had left the circle prior to the ritual.
>>
>>29991228
part 2 of 2

After Imari is abducted by Kitami, the lesser demon leaves Minase and he realizes that he loves Imari and must save her. With the help of Takashiro and the Bible Black, he finds a spell Takashiro believes will stop Kitami's evil scheme. By this point, it is Walpurgis Night once again, and Kitami plans to reincarnate herself in Imari. Kitami slits her wrists and has sexual intercourse with Imari as the reincarnation ritual demands, but Minase interrupts it and casts his spell on Kitami. This apparently causes the ritual to fail and Kitami to die from blood loss.

The series ends with Minase and Imari confessing their love for each other and having intercourse. Afterwards, Saeki is seen in the Witchcraft Club sanctuary, planning to steal the Bible Black, which was going to be left in there before the entrance was cemented over. Imari enters the room and destroys the Bible Black with a spell that causes it to burst into flames, then reveals herself to be a hermaphrodite, showing that Kitami's ritual was successful. Kitami then decides to test her new body out by raping Saeki.

yeah but theyre similar.

high school student flash sentry something somethings while something, becomes imbued with the spirit of the mystical mythriline moth.

using the power of self insertion, flash mothry is able to make twilight spackle fall in love with him. after which he goes about school fighting giant monsters or something and raping and deflowering literally every female in the world while his past conquests cheer him on.

see? pretty similar in how retarded t sounds
>>
>>29991248
no,thats not how it works
flash kinda is gonna rape twilight if there is anything to go by the actual series
following which the person who previously used it will rape shimmer? i guess in front of him while also forcing him to rape her too

The good old starter kit will be three years old this summer.

Would there be any interest in doing another nomination/voting process similar to the last one? Meaning, if I ran the thing again, would people care enough to nominate / discuss / vote on stories?

I'm thinking we could make a "best new stories" list, with nominations restricted to fics first published in 2014 or later. Every list of recommendations includes plenty of "classics", from 2011-2013 era, but seeing recs for newer fics is less common. Having a list of good new fics could be useful not only to new readers but also to long-time regulars of this thread.

The simplest and most effective way to indicate a flashback is to present some reference point to the reader (a dead character's still alive, NMM still on the moon, etc.).

Transitions are hard since there's no visual way of doing things. Opening a chapter with one is about the only way you can dump the reader into it with no setup. Otherwise, you have to follow >>29984719 and have some narrative element lead the reader in.

It's also important to figure out what kind of flashback is happening. Most are going to be memories, so the narration must be limited to the character remembering (and also potential not accurate to the actual events, since memories are almost always corrupt to some degree). The other option is a "historical flashback," where the omniscient narration presents events as they actually happened, with whatever POV shifts are needed. The later's going to be a lot harder to setup and usually happens in cold openings while the former has a much easier time blending into the story's body.

>>29999475
>latest chapter
If it's a multichapter, upload time's not really going to matter since anyone following the story will be notified when it updates and they'll read it whenever they get around to reading it.

For new fics, it depends on the day. For weekdays, evening's (6-10PM) probably best as everyone's back from work/school by then and gotten comfy. Afternoon (1-5 PM) for weekends.

None of that's really ever mattered for my fics. One got featured over night (5-11 AM) and another was featured late at night (11:50 PM). The lesson's that timing is only part of what get's a fic popular.

Because, on the other hand, fimfic is filled with autists and underages, so much that there's only a handful of people actually capable of telling you where you fucked up. The vast majority will simply read your shit then fuck off, leaving a thumb up or down.

I've had madman's diary in my 'read later list' for years.
Never had the courage to start.
>>
>>30008384
Wait, where do you check how many words you 'read'? I remember it was somewhere on the user page a while ago but it seems to have disappeared.
>>
>>30008553
You don't, they removed it for a bunch of bullshit reasons. Well, they were valid (such as the DB query taking too long), but they could have been solved (such as requiring a user to click a button to generate the count instead of doing it automatically on every profile page load), they just didn't bother.

I just throw like 60-70% of what I read into my favourites, using it as something of a "I read it and it was nice" folder rather than a proper, curated set of favourites. I have around 10 million in my favourites, so I extrapolate from that.
It's nowhere near accurate but it works.
>>
>>30008384
Make that 5.

There have been a few fics since that time that are good, and it'd be nice to share them with others.
>>
Anybody here read The Lunar Guardsman? I remembered I haven't caught up in a while, I should really do it.

It's literally everything autistic and cringy you could ever have - a super-edgy human OC, edgy and angsty Luna, etc. - but it's done so very surprisingly well that when reading it, it doesn't seem autistic at all, and it's really quite interesting. Or maybe I'm just autistic myself.
>>
>>30008631
Personally, I have a rigorous set of standards a fic must go through before it goes on my RIL shelf, so that >99% of what i read is good enough to go on my Favorites shelf, which is sitting at about 10.5 million.

Still got 38 million horsewords to get through on my RIL shelf this summer though.

You know, from what I've seen, quite a few stories are akin to webcomics in length. For instance https://www.fimfiction.net/story/324532/three-more-things & https://www.fimfiction.net/story/131002/the-wheel-and-the-butterfly-a-dan-x-pinkie-pie-saga are so long you can spend days getting caught up, and they are still updating.
>>
>>30009089

Have you ever heard of this thing called a "novel"? It's a piece of writing that is usually relatively long, and meant to be read over multiple days or even weeks.

>>30008631
I just have an "I read these" bookshelf set up. Favorites are only added when I finish something and think "yeah I really liked that" and then I'll go back like a week later and try to remember why I liked it. If I can't, off it goes.
>>
>>30008377
>How awful is Astraeoh? Is it actually readable?
Yeah, it's okay. The first and sixth books in particular are pretty good. The first also has a pretty decent ending (I don't think it was meant to be a series in the beginning) so you can stop there if you want.

Honeslty if I could do that I would, but by now I've spent way too much time on there for it to have any meaning. I barely read on there anymore so there's literally no reason for me to set that up now. I do, however, have a "top favourites" shelf for stuff that I actually, really like, beyond "that was an enjoyable read".

I've also got a bunch of actual crap in my favourites from back when I was an underage autist and first discovered fimfiction, and hadn't read nearly enough fanfics to pick up on the common cringy tropes. Like, a screenshot of my early favourites could easily be featured in a cringe compilation. Then as time went on my standards slowly rose (which feels retarded to say given that I'm talking about fanfiction about a girl's cartoon about ponies, but you get my point).
