That was the idea in the 80s. Nowadays it does make a difference because if the TV shows a rerun, the little kid will turn to one of the other thousand channels that have new cartoons, or more likely, a Youtube channel.

Hasbro knows it can sell its merch to adults but it wants to try and keep its target audience.
At the young ages of 5-12 the episodes don't have to be good just cute with silly sounds and pretty princesses.
They'll keep pumping out episodes as long as little girls keep tuning in.

Lore would either contradict what's already in place (which is a bit of a mess as is) or would only pop in for the sake of convenience/plot, just like most magic.
