Programming is not the bottleneck. Art is not even really the bottleneck.

The bottleneck is content and design. How many routes will there be? Where do they diverge and converge? How many branching paths within a single route are available from player decisions? How many good ends and bad ends? Are there unique mechanics like stats or inventory? Minigames? Schedule management?

All these decisions need to be made before you can write a single line of code or a single line of dialogue. And not like, we have a rough sense of this or that, but hammered out down to a T, and even those hard decisions will very likely have to change in a fast, agile process as you go along, without days of deliberation each time.

When is the last time /mlp/ agreed on anything, even the smallest detail, in relation to this show? Now imagine all of the above being decided by a committee of horsefuckers and you have a recipe for utter disaster. The only reason this VN got as far as it did was out of general respect for Smutty and his calming influence, but in the end even that wasn't enough.

Creative projects do not benefit from being run democratically and I invite you to point to a single example of the contrary. They benefit from a benevolent dictator. And since /mlp/ will never decide on one this kind of group project is a pipe dream.

The only chance is for one insane autist to come out with a strong enough vision, draft an artist, a composer, and a programmer and 4 or 5-man army the entire thing. But if that was going to happen I'd wager it would have happened already.
