Part of the issue with MLP is the execs wanted the episodes to be watchable in any order. They've loosened up recently but it seems like the requirement is still there to some extent. (Remember how some character lays out Glimmer's entire backstory at the start of every single one of her S6 episodes?)

If they dropped that restriction entirely for the hypothetical EqG show, then I bet we would see a lot more and better quality story arcs.
