if youll allow e to provide another viewpoint from a less pessimistic angle; movies made for a show series, as a rule, can not change the status quo. changing the status quo of a show using a movie that not everyone will see, or that channels cant regularly air, is bad practice. some have done it in the past, but they are the exception to the rule.
that said, having an adventure take place away from the status quo is the easiest way to let them influence areas and characters without causing any permanent changes to their regular areas.
