Now that the new season has a date and it's coming up in a little over a month on April 15th, I'm planning on making another series of episode ranking threads starting about a week from now to see where season 6 is going to settle down in the charts since hiatus is coming to a close.

It'll be the same All Our Ideas and traditional one on one episode sorter to accommodate as many Anons as possible. The All Our Ideas sorter goes on as long as you want to rank episodes, just like before, and in my testing the traditional sorter that makes a list at the end seems to take about 50 minutes minimum to do if you don't get stuck on any particular match for too long.
I'll keep the threads running till about a week after the first episode airs in an attempt to get in as many Anons currently here as possible as well as Anons coming back from hiatus.

Few questions in the meantime. Does pic related look okay as a template for the final product? Any typos or glaring design flaws that I should fix? It's about the same as the last one with the addition of the post S6 ranking.
Also, I was wondering if it would be a good idea to keep the two parters split apart on both sorters. For example Return of Harmony would be 2 items, one for part 1 and one for part two, so the two parts could be measured against each other instead of being one combined episode.
A problem I had last time is that the Anons doing the All Our Ideas sorter weren't answering the other questions in the OP like age, optimism, and rating. Have any ideas how I could get them to notice and answer those questions?
Lastly if the Anon that helped with the traditional episode sorter wit hthe pictures is around then I need to ask you some things if it's not too much trouble.

I'll take any other questions, comments, or concerns too if you all have anything to say. I want this to be something that you guys can appreciate, so I'm thankful for any input.
>>
Here's how the last one turned out if you'd like to discuss that.

At this point I'm not sure if Return of harmony will ever not be #1, but I think the others have a chance of shifting.

I feel like All Our Ideas is an awful was to gather meaningful data.

Yeah, the pictures won't load from either of the links I have saved. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/77412572/My%20Little%20Pony%20Favorite%20Episodes%20Sorter.html is the newest one, right?

I think parts one and two should be two separate items.

Have you considered making a category (like season or writer) to compare episodes with different numbers of songs in them? I tend to prefer episodes with music, and am wondering if that is a trend.
>>
>>29650760
>the pictures won't load
I take that back. It didn't work when we last spoke some weeks ago.

I find it kinda funny that that guy has enough of a reputation for that in order to be remembered.

>>29650760
>I feel like All Our Ideas is an awful was to gather meaningful data.
How so? It did give a good deal more Anons the chance to participate it seems. If I could figure out a way to make them answer the other questions before sorting then it would be perfect.

The sorter loads images for me, and it seems it eventually did for you too, but they sometimes didn't load and there's the problem of them loading multiple images if you happen to figure out which thing you like more fast enough, I'm hoping some Anon may lend their skill to finding a solution to that.

>Have you considered making a category (like season or writer) to compare episodes with different numbers of songs in them? I tend to prefer episodes with music, and am wondering if that is a trend.
I can make another separate chart to compare the musical episode like I do for the episode ranking by central character, but I'd have to think to see if it'll make it into the main graphic.

To make sure your opinion is counted. If everyone got discouraged that their result was different from what they perceived as the norm then there wouldn't be any chance for something different to come up.
I know the S1/S2 bias is really heavy here, but it's still nice to see the really good stuff from the other seasons float to the top. I don't think it's hopeless for things to change if enough Anons find that they like other episodes more anyway.

That's not too terribly bad considering how loud some of the Anons that don't watch the show can be.

In the case of these surveys it could just be that Anons like pony more and even if they like the movies that fact puts them way down their rankings.

I understand. I'm not going to try and make anyone participate, it does suck seeing an opinion buried like that, but I'd hate to see that keep Anons from participating. I'm going to try and accurately represent whatever kind of data I get like always, but know that even the outliers have an effect on the way the ranking looks in the end. At very least the favorite episodes at the top of lists usually get a nice boost.

Usually the survey before a season is to see how the previous one ended up settling down now that it's not in recent memory. I find that it can make later episodes in the recent season move around, and it also gives confidence in the positions of the last one if they stay the same.

Could I have a look at the sorter? I might try doing something faster. It uses a merge sort, so having 2 rows of 4 episodes each and then have the person click on them in order of preference could easily cut down the time by ~40-60%.

I'm thankful for any kind of help i can get, so thanks for whatever you come up with Anon.
I did notice that if you were quick enough to select multiple choices that it would load more than one image per item, and sometime images wouldn't load at all. Also, the one thing I need it to do is to generate the same kind of list at the end since I take that and copy paste it into Excel and run some macros to add the data.
Otherwise, Anons seemed to like the save feature and the auto-save cookies. I find the concept of ranking 4 at a time intriguing.

It returned <# of points> <ep. name> if I remember right, so that shouldn't be hard. The way it shows images currently is not optimal, to say the least, as it apparently downloads the wiki page each time, to find out the image link.

Also the sort would be something like
9 6 3 2
8 7 5 4
So way easier to sort than if it were completely random.

For those of you who participated in this last time, did you think the All Our Ideas part of that survey was an okay thing to add?
A little under 3/4 of the participants came from that one, but, traditional sorter aside of course, I'm not sure if it ended up giving a broader result, or a sparse result over many Anons
>>
>>29660635
I don't like the All Our Ideas because all it takes is one autist clicking for 2 hours to skew the results. The standard episode sorter is more time consuming, yes, but also more telling, and you can shitpost itt about it. The sad truth is that we won't get many answers with it, though, since the replies are already dwindling. I wish there was some way to motivate anons.

>>
>>29660837
>>29660861
Balancing the need for uniform and accurate representation of opinion through surveys with the fact that they're a barrier to entry due to being so time consuming is why I had tried the All Our Ideas method for last time. It did produce a whole ton of votes, but again there was that loss of data per Anon and the risk of stuffing it with votes by a small group of dedicated autists.
I'd love to just do the sorter if the Anons were willing to do it. I guess I could attempt it without the All Our Ideas sorter just to see what happens, but I'm worried we'll end up with a dead thread if it doesn't catch on. The Anon there >>29655178 working on stuff may pull through with something that'll make it easier and less time consuming at least.

If it goes well I'll have something working tonight. I've not done anything big in javascript, but that thing seemed pretty pajeet-tier to me, so I'm doing it from ground up and this time the code should hopefully be more readable than a perl script.

Few questions:
Can it be split into multiple files (js, css, ...)?
Can the images be self-hosted? It's little over 8MB total in png or 1.2MB in 60% jpg.
>>
>>29666873
I just have a single HTML file in my public dropbox and that's where I host the survey link from for the current version. It can be split as long as it can work from a Dropbox though. Otherwise I'm open to suggestions on how to use something else to host it if multiple files won't work there.
I'm not sure what the download limit is for files hosted in Dropbox, but when I hosted the comics there I didn't have Anons often saying that they couldn't get to them. I'd still say the smaller images are a better bet to be safe though.

Thanks again for taking the time to do this Anon. I'm looking forward to seeing what you make.

Here's a prototype thing on a shitty filehosting. There's some polishing and enhancing to do but it should mostly work.
filehosting . org/file/details/649201/srt.7z
7zip pass: MWQzNDkyYzc3
(filehosting wants email to request download link you can just use guerrillamail dot com with non-scrambled address or something)

>>29669309
Worst case scenario, people will have to download the web page and access it locally. Shouldn't be too hard. Though all our ideas won't work with it...
>>
>>29669434
Honestly, I like doing it one comparison at a time for the novelty. If you want to do more comparisons at a time, do all ~145! and just click and drag a list to sort.

But for serious if people are comparing more than two I think there should be a dragging list type of sorter and and enter button.
>>
>>29669485
In reality it's really just one comparison at a time too (the two leftmost ones), you just see what's comping up next (=> faster reaction times and less mistakes). Plus you can fix your mistakes by selecting stuff that's wrongly not on the left. There definitely should be some visual indication.
>>
>>29669434
I just got out of work now, so give me an hour or so to get home and I'll see how it works. Again, thanks for helping. I really appreciate it.
>>
>>29669434
Okay, I'm home and uploaded it if you want to try it there:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/77412572/sorter/sorter.html

Seems to work from the public link, and I know you said it needs polish and enhancing, but here's what I found testing it on Chrome and Firefox in case I found something you didn't.
Is it only supposed to do season 1 at the moment? If so, then Green Isn't Your Color's and Owl's Well's images are both broken it seems, and the rows tend to extend past the edge of the screen. I'm guessing you pick what you like most out of what you see, but some instruction at the top just in case may be nice.
List at the end and the concept seem okay though. Certainly an interesting way to do it, but I'd like to test it some more once you update it.

Yeah, that's just for testing. There's actually full list in one of the files but seasons 2-6 are commented out to make testing faster. The batch download failed to get couple images, I'm aware of that. I'm thinking maybe having it in columns might be better than rows too.

I'll probably put simple explanation about merge sort and that on top, maybe also make the two "first" episodes stand out visually.

>>29670188
You can click whatever you want and it gets sorted in that exact order. But since it's merge sort, the upper and the bottom sequences are already sorted by themselves, so usually, you'll either pick top left or bottom left.

It's not exactly newbie-friendly, it has millions of features you don't need which make it look complicated, you need to install some command line tools to set it up, and when you want to update any file you can't do it from the web, you have to use the command line again. But it was good enough for me, so when I started using it, I stopped looking for more alternatives.

If no one else has a better alternative and using the command line doesn't scare you too much, you could give it a try, and I could try to help if you have any problem setting it up.

You can do srtr.autosave() and srtr.loadAutosave() in web console to save/load the state. I'll add some buttons or something later.
>>
>>29673364
A button to undo, make a manual save, and maybe the ability to scroll through the choices when it's more than 4 rows would be nice. I don't want someone to pick one episode over another when they would've picked something else that was concealed.

>I don't want someone to pick one episode over another when they would've picked something else that was concealed.
Again, this is mergesort, so if the person has been responding somewhat truthfully, the best episode should be somewhere around the top. Even if there are some mistakes made and inaccuracies inherent to sorting something, that doesn't have strict ordering, by feeling. But I can certainly make that a user setting and raise it to ~10 by default.

Good to see you around! I was wondering if you could perhaps see about a way to make the sorter not load multiple images at once, see pic related, if you quickly go through a few options before images are able to load?
Otherwise that sorter is A-Okay from what I can tell. It's just that the server handling those images is loading a bit slowly nowadays and that's making it more likely to break in that way.
>>
>>29675482
That would be great. I know that logically it should be up top given truthful answers, but I'd rather have a fail-safe in there just in case.

actually, they end up tied at the end, which may or may not just put them alphabetically/randomly in order for the list.

As long as the rank is tied at the end the macro I run will assign equal points for the tied episodes, so alphabetical order or not doesn't matter.

Everything seems to work just fine in the sorter and macro. I felt like it took less time given the way things flowed as I sorted, but I didn't clock myself so I can't be sure.

These are the impressions I had:

Some things I'd like to have looked at:
Perhaps autosave on close, and autoload when opening.
EqG wikipedia descriptions aren't loading.
Instructions like, "Click whichever episode you like more." up top would be helpful since some Anons get stuck on whether I want what they think is better or what criteria I'm wanting them to use to compare.
If possible, a "I like both"-esque option for ties like >>29683317 that can get Anons stuck on. I'm not sure how exactly that could be coded in, but an idea I had would be to tie the two together in one of the two episodes and display that one until the sort is done. Using the linked pair as an example, you'd perhaps show Amending Fences and not CotLM in future sort sequences and then have them have the same number (the rank below minus 2) when the list is generated at the end.

On the positive side:
Pictures load fast and with no errors.
It's easy to fix a mistake in a previous sequence of sorting.
Buttons up top and descriptions on the side are a good touch.
It helps to know when you pick an episode what episodes on the other side you're putting it above.
The interface is really slick.

When I get the chance I'm going to run through the other sorter and see how the two lists compare. I don't know if it's just the way I picked, but the seasons ended up in chunks on my list as you can see in pic related.
Feel free to ree at my onions pictured there.

Apart from adding the lines with +, you also need to break up "insertEpImage" into "insertEpImage" and "getLinkFromWikiResponse" and I that should work, I think.

>>29683605
>Perhaps autosave on close, and autoload when opening.
That's shouldn't be a problem.

Because I haven't added them.
>Instructions like, "Click whichever episode you like more." up top would be helpful since some Anons get stuck on whether I want what they think is better or what criteria I'm wanting them to use to compare.
I'm not sure how that would fit in with the design. I could have a popup box for new visitors on top, I guess.
>If possible, a "I like both"-esque option for ties like >>29683317 that can get Anons stuck on. >>
>>29686009
>Only I'm not sure how to display such groups and what to do with the info box.
You don't need to display the group, just one of the two episodes from that group. Same goes for the wiki description.
If they're both tied then either should be good for comparing the group to other episodes.

I'd say above the middle of the two top episodes. Another thing I just thought up was whether there would be any confusion about what two things you'd be saying you like the same, but I think putting it up top and in the middle above the top two would strongly imply those two episodes.

What exactly do you mean by that? I'm sorry, but my experience on this part if woefully small.
>>
>>29686899
This is what it looks like on my side:

function getLinkFromWikiResponse(responseText) {
var link = responseText.substring(responseText.search('class="image image-thumbnail"'));
link = link.substring(link.search("<img src=")+10);
link = link.substring(0, link.search('"'));
return link;
}

function insertEpImage(link, elem) {
elem.innerHTML = '<img style="max-width:300px; max-height:200px;" src="'+link+'"/>' + elem.innerHTML;
}

// Download episode pics then insert them asynchronously
var epImageLinks = {};
function downloadEpImage(wikiLink, elem) {
if (wikiLink in epImageLinks) {
insertEpImage(epImageLinks[wikiLink], elem);
return;
}
var xmlHttp = new XMLHttpRequest();
xmlHttp.onreadystatechange = function() {
if (xmlHttp.readyState == 4 && xmlHttp.status == 200) {
var imgLink = getLinkFromWikiResponse(xmlHttp.responseText);
insertEpImage(imgLink, elem);
epImageLinks[wikiLink] = imgLink;
}
}
xmlHttp.open("GET", "https://crossorigin.me/"+wikiLink, true);
xmlHttp.send(null);
}

I was toying with it a bit before deciding to do my own thing, but I don't think I changed much else than this.
