Even aside from their being visually terrible, the whole premise of making them something like that is awful. It presupposes and implies that black intrinsically corresponds to evil.

The holes in the changelings and their fangs represented their constant hunger and voracity that arose from taking and hoarding love rather than giving love. The moral of their transformation was that giving love is an endless source of love, whereby they are finally happy.

The transformation should have simply filled in their holes and receded their fangs.

I'm not sure if a story like that can work in a show like this. It's too episodic and compartmentalized, a story like that would be better suited to a more serialized show, where we can have a proper snowball effect. The format the show has currently would just result in a whole bunch of episodes like The Times They Are A Changeling, where the ponies come across a pony that doesn't trust changelings, hijinks ensue, and the pony learns not to be a racist in the same episode.

Well, yes, I'd say that the show forcing itself to not extend a story longer than 48 minutes is one of the major reasons for its quality issues as of late: They've exhausted so many ideas and characters, and yet can't slow themselves down to write a better, more complex story.

And I think there are a number of other ideas we could run with than infinite rehashes of TTTAAC.

This would be nice, but MLP has never been like that. The show is episodic; the closest it gets to story arcs are slow character development and things like the keys in S4, which are compatible with its episodic nature. The point that the writers preserve is that one does not need to have watched any other episodes to watch and understand a given one; each episode is self-contained. This is why in the Thorax episode they re-explained what changelings are, for instance.
