There was actually an RGRE prompt I liked that went kind of like this.

Anon is a specially uncanny valley kind of ugly to ponies
His smell, and certain things about how he looks, he's too close to being like a pony, but not right; so instead of being able to see him as a weird animal, he's like a pony gone horrifically wrong.
Ponies are still friendly, because they're decent sorts, but they have to hold down their lunch if they look at or smell him too long.
Pinkie, however, has hit a dry spell, and hears from gossip that he's a virgin, so she goes over and says they can help each other out.
She (and therefore the Mane Six) discover the joys of human stamina and non-reversed gender roles male libido.
Several of them end up casually fucking, but Rainbow (attractive in this scenario) starts to do more intimate stuff without thinking about it. She'll stay the night, unlike the others who mostly leave. She'll be more affectionate than sexual, like nuzzling and rolling in his scent. She unconsciously offers up her wing for preening while they're watching a movie (a deeply intimate, trusting gesture). And she doesn't exactly realize what's happening until he mentions that he and Pinkie made plans to get busy after her birthday party this weekend, and she's suddenly incandescently angry.

You make a good point and I kinda-sorta did that on purpose, but I probably could have addressed it by putting a simple one-liner in there. Oh well, I'll address it soon (in the next dump or two). It does need to be addressed but it's not critical to be addressed in the first dump, so I'll just take that as a learning element.

I think you actually ordered your exposition quite well since starting a green with loads of the same, dry "here's anon meeting Rainbow and learning things about the character that the reader already knows" is a great way to lose reader interest. I only make mention of that because it'd be a shame if your story had no grounding to the character's relationship. You've done great so far, and I hope you keep going with it. That being said don't do a shitty dream sequence for the origin story; that's gay.

i know this is the whole premise of this thread, but i cannot suspend my disbelief enough to believe she is that unattractive. There is no way the town would have thrown a party for her or have her own fanclub if she were basically the elephant man of ponies.

In a weird way, knowing other ponies find Dash repulsive would be a major turn on for me. I'd go out of my way to show her affection in public just to watch other ponies squirm with discomfort. No doubt that's part of the allure of these stories. Also they play on the already established performance anxiety she has, which her attention seeking behavior is something of a crutch for. The idea that part of her drive to be admired comes from the fact she knows other ponies don't find her attractive is delicious, just adding another level of vulnerability to her. And Anon having to dance around that while awkwardly romancing her is really fun to read.

It's good to be humble, I really think that's a good virtue. However, it's not right to acknowledge that you have some talent.

Your writing speaks from the heart, man. By that I mean you obviously put a lot of your own emotions into words, maybe or most likely drawing on past experiences to help you out. I don't know if you know this or not, but that's literally the first step to becoming a good story teller. Your work is rough, sure, but it's obvious you haven't really done any intensive study on the subject, you're just doing it because you felt like it, and maybe it makes you feel good. I want to address that.

If you enjoy writing, I think you should pursue it. You're right, it takes a lot of work and energy to get better, and the deeper you go the more difficult it becomes to learn, but it's worth it. It's worth getting shit from people because they don't like it, because it helps you grow as a person and a writer. It's worth it because you'll make people happy, maybe not with the effort you put forth, but with the product you make at the end of all your toil and trouble. It's worth it because at the end of the day, it makes you happy, and that's the biggest thing of all you should realize.

You really do have potential, I could see it in the first part of this little story you're doing now. While it'd make me super happy to know that you keep on going, I don't want you to feel like you should do it just because someone else thinks you should. Don't be sorry that you take your time to make work you enjoy. Story telling is an art, and writing is the medium. You do you.

It may feel like you're not appreciated somewhere or that you're wasting your time on a project you feel will get you nowhere, and if you ever do reach that point, just remember why you do it.

Everyone has potential to write. Everyone. Every last person on this Earth has the ability to put words on paper, or to learn to do as much. From then on, it's simply a matter of taking the ideas constantly turning over in our heads and relaying them through pens and keyboards. As to whether or not he should keep going, I would say that he definitively should do it, especially because someone else wants him to. An entertainer creates his act not for himself but for the crowd, and in much the same way a writer creates his literature for the reader. If the reader is himself, that's fine. But if the reader is a crowd and the crowd likes it, that is the key tell of success and the most important sign to move forward with the story.
