I'm- I mean my friend is unfamiliar with um, whatever you're talking about, so could you maybe explain what the CGPeers thing is... for my friend.
>>29354668
Lookin good. I really like all the experimenting with perspective. Pic related since we're on the subject; it's a way I showed people how to do foreshortening on pony arms/torsos. Not a lot of people take it into account when they draw ponies/cartoon stuff. You should really try to get a perfect birds-eye-view though so we can see it better.
>>
>>29354685

CGPeers is a private torrent track website, pretty much one of the best out there for stuff related to 3D and 2D, from software to tutorials.

The domain usually runs on a ratio of seed/leech for users, so that people that download too much without giving back are penalized, but currently everyone is free to download as much as they want, so that's great for downloading really big files such as Eric Olson's 50gb seminar on Perspective, of all the Vilppu's stuff, ctrl+, CGMA...etc

It's pretty complete, I've downloaded like 40gb worth of stuff today alone and it's going to take me a long time to go through it all.

If you're a poorfag like me, you'll be very happy with the site.
>>29354685

That looks pretty cool, reminds me of the ''Coil technique'' by Sycra. I definitely gotta try to implement that when drawing figures in perspective.
>>
If any of youse guise need some /ic/ let us know!
>>29354739
>runs on a ratio of seed/leech for users, so that people that download too much without giving back are penalized
Oh, so it's basically uh, Demonoid?
>If you're a poorfag like me, you'll be very happy with the site.
I'm not a poorfag but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate a good bargain
> I definitely gotta try to implement that when drawing figures in perspective.
I can help you all you need! Judging by the name, the "coil technique is probably the same or a similar idea. I have another tutorial I've been meaning to finish for you guys. I'll try to get it done tonight
>>
>>29354772

>Oh, so it's basically uh, Demonoid?

Yes, but limited to 3D and 2D software, plugins, books, DVD..etc. It is also a bit harder to get in (Only opens registration on the first and 15th of each month).

>I have another tutorial I've been meaning to finish for you guys. I'll try to get it done tonight

That would be really cool, I am going to bed now. I'll check the thread when I wake up in hopes you finished it by then.

Good night
>>
>>29354888
Oh, I appreciate the information but I'm doing fine on my software, thanks! Maybe someone else will need it though. And alright, good night, talk to you later

I can redline it in a few minute if you'd like. I'm not great with describing problems with words but I can do fairly well drawing on top of yours
>>
>>29355307
I wonder what happened to my post.
I will be glad if you can do some thing here and there. I like what I did but I know the leg is off. The back and the front I think. I was too lazy to look for a good reference so I went just with imagination.
>>
>>29355421
Probably because it was NSFW.. What do you mean "here and there"? Like just do a light redlining?

You're a truly awesome namefag helping aspiring drawfags in these threads. I'd hate to see you get in trouble for something as petty as that.
>>
>>29355595
Working on yours now; thanks for the ref
>>29355906
Ah jeez, thanks dude. I do it because I love to see new and aspiring artists and I'd hate to see them give up because they can't figure out how to draw something. I've been doing online art "tutoring" (for lack of a better word) for 5 years or so. The amount of redlines I've done for /mlp/ is around 300 because that's how many files I have in my redlines folder. Plus helping you guys helps me. To quote a great wizard: "Help will always be given at the /ic/ drawthread to those who ask for it."

Okay so I'm really proud of you for improving! That said there are a few things that you need to study a bit more on. Your joints are reaaaaaally close to where they should be, but not quite close enough so I had to redo that. Your torso was too long so I shortened it and y our head was a little small so I blew it up a little. Your face isn't curvy enough. Your eye is actually decent but it wasn't in the right place exactly. Lastly, I changed the hair to be curvy because it looks more dynamic. I hope this all helps!

running_Applejack.png

>>29356097
Thanks! I think that the reason the skeleton didn't work for me before is I was working with references that didn't include that bit of the back leg bone that sticks out past the joint, without which that little bump seemed fairly arbitrary.

I thought that maybe the mane/tail should be wavier, but my reference image (>>29355605) had them practically straight. It also had the split in her mane where her horn was. The body was longer because the reference image (pic related) had the body circles pulled apart instead of intersecting.
>>
>>29356411
Well I wasn't using a reference so I was just going by stuff I know. Also I was trying to keep your style as best I could rather than just do a completely newly drawn picture, you know? I do see how AJ's torso is a little longer than normal so my mistake there, but I really think you should keep my hair suggestion as it makes the pose more dynamic. I actually didn't have to fix anything waaay off, just a few small things. Anyway you're doing a great job and I'm proud of you. If you want you can move on to a new pose? Like why not experiment with a flying pose next? Don't limit yourself :)
>>
>>29356453
I'll take a look for a flying reference.

By the way, could you explain what those horizontal lines by the hooves mean?
>>
>>29356467
Oh it's just showing where the hoof would be bent if the hoof were bent.

Oy, just woke up. CGPeers is not limited to software, if that's what you understood from my post.

There's a shit on of tutorials, stuff that's worth 600$ and more in there. Just the How to Draw book by Scott Robertson is easy 200$, and the 8 week video series of CGMA can run you 700$ each.

Was it a bad idea to skip drawing on paper? Are there any benefits to paper that a tablet doesn't have when it comes to learning basics?
i'm very used to drawing on a tablet already
>>
>>29356467
Alright, I'm trying this one.
>>
>>29362916
Alrighty you go get 'em
>>29362904
Both have their advantages, but like I tell everyone, you should always start off on pencil and paper. What if one day the cockpocolypse comes and our computers no longer work? How are you going to draw then? I guess if there's nothing better to do you can learn to draw on paper anyway, but you learn HOW to draw better - like how to draw with your shoulder instead of your wrist. You can do live drawings of animals, people, places, things etc and it's really hard to do a gesture drawing when it's a completely still photograph. I can't tell you what to do, but I'd recommend getting a sketchbook and taking it with you wherever you go and draw at least one thing you see each time.

I'm not sure if I see much difference. I can still draw with my shoulder on a tablet can I not? Only changes I can see are that you can't shade the same way as on paper, and you're forced to learn how to draw lightly. Am I missing anything else? It's not that i'm unwilling to draw on paper, I just feel I'm more productive on a tablet

Your muzzles are still square, necks a little too long, joints are kind of stiff, the wings should connect to the shoulder blades more than they should the thighs, hair needs more mass, but despite all that you're really improving and I'm proud of you.
>>29363052
I don't know how big your tablet is, but I still think you should try to draw on paper and pencil a bit. It's not gonna hurt to learn how much more permanent paper/canvas/traditional media can be and I think that's an important message too. If you don't want to do it, you don't have to, but I'm not going to go back and forth if it's something you really don't want to do. I do feel like it WILL help you be better on your tablet though since you'll learn new tricks 'n' treats though. Plus if you fuck up, you can take a picture or scan it in and fix it digitally after anyway.
I included a shitty traditional media (paper/pencil) thing I did which actually helped me draw better anatomy by learning I can't just keep clipping things and gluing them together on paper

I do tend to do this a lot when piecing my rough draft together. I might give paper a try. Is there a good guide somewhere on what supplies i'd need?

2. Challenge: draw a pony (pony or humanized is fine) in 30 seconds

I prefer a mechanical pencil, but you can use any you want and some paper that isn't printer paper. That's honestly all you need but if you want you can add a white eraser (pic related)

What's wrong with printer paper? I started out using printer paper and a standard mechanical pencil.

The 120 second one is fine but the 30 second one is more like about how much you can draw without "guides". They look really similar though; like you spent the same amount of time on each? It's weird how you can stare at an image for a good while, but you don't notice something like that until it's pointed out to you.
>>
>>29366554
Main problem I see is that your pone looks pretty scrawny. Try making the legs (especially the front ones) shorter and thicker, and shorten the neck by a px or two as well.

You should consider making the head bigger as well. That will give you more space for details around the eyes and muzzle.

Don't be afraid of going "off-model" when you're making these or other changes. It's just not possible to take a design meant for 200-400px (minimum) and cram it into 32x32, while still having it look the same. Even if the proportions wind up "wrong", it's fine if it's cute and looks like a pony.

Other stuff:
> Front view: ears should be more toward the side of the head, not directly on top
> The top of the muzzle (that ^ shape) looks pretty strange. This should be fixable if you make the head bigger and/or remove the interior corners of the diagonal parts of the head outline.
> Pupils on the eyes are probably too small, consider making them bigger even if you have to sacrifice some of the whites.
> Side view: muzzle is too long, try making it extend only 1px instead of 2
> Lower part of the back leg has too much curvature. Make it a bit straighter.
>>
>>29367296
Now that the floor is not see of piss and I can focus I can say something. I am just a learning guy here so I don't know much but I feel there is something very very wrong with perspective with the bottom guy.

If you want that pose to work I think the top needs to be further to the left, as in, her weight should be closer to the center of the bottom.

Right now it feels like she would simply fall backwards as the bottom really has no way to hold her, what's more, I kinda worry he might break his back.

I think you could have that pose, where the top has the legs on each side of the bottom's head but it might still be a bit weird. I dunno.

If i may say, it took me some time to actually figure her pose, but only because it's a battle pose (yeah battleposes).
I think you should change the angle of the drawing, since others could not understand that she's on guard with the shield
>>
>>29374873
>change the angle of the drawing
Definitely a little late to do a change like that, but I see your concern about the pose being confusing to figure out. Not exactly sure what you're referencing to about "others", but I get the point nonetheless. Thank you anon, I'll keep this in mind next time around.
>>
>>29374750
The perspective is really extreme. Look at how much bigger her front leg is than her back leg.
>>
>>29374910
Yeah sorry if sometime i misspell, i meant "other people".
For example to me is easy to recognize some stances or combat poses since i also draw them (and i also do LARP) and a problem i always had is if you draw the pose with from a certain angle, the drawing become hard to figure if you don't actually know the pose the artist have drawn.
For the rest, keep goin man!

Hmm. Ok, I see what you mean. Good thing to bring up. But before deciding if I should change it, I'll probably redline it to better display what's going on behind the tail. You could be correct, or the tail is just doing eye tricks. Either way, thank you for bringing that up I'll be sure to look into it and verify.

I find ponies in armor pretty hot so I really like this!

for some general notes, unless these are your prefered style

the horn and the snout are too pointy I think. I think it takes away from the fact, that Vinyl is a female as hard edges are mostly used for masculine characters

The main issue I see there is that you drew the station point and the Vanishing points too close to each other, and drew outside a 60º field of view. There's also some out of alignment ellipses in there that I tried to mark over.

My example includes your subject a bit higher over the horizon line than your original one, but I think learning about keeping your drawings inside a 60º FOV should help you regardless.

Let me know if it didn't help, my hand writing is quite terrible.
>>
>>29375759
>too pointy
I would definitely say those are things that are pretty evident (but not essential) in my style. I personally like having sharp corners, makes nice counters to the soft curves of the belly, head, etc... But you do have a point. It could lead to an otherwise feminine pony looking too masculine. That definitely is a concern I should address. I love sharp corners (even on mares), but I don't wanna lose feminine appearance for it, or at least too much. What do you think?
>>
>>29375811
Uh well I can't really do that at the moment (see: I can't find my stylus still) and all I was really going for was a gallery of different poses for you guys to try and figure out. If you attempt one and get it wrong though, I'll break it down on paper and take a picture for you though
>>

Also, there are going to be like, 40? images in this folder and there's no way I'm going to go in by hand and make little anatomy circles 'n joints for every single one of them - especially the easy ones

You say you are new to pone. So you draw already and know stuff right?
Muzzle is to stright, should be more round. Legs could be a little thicker. But it looks fine overall and if you can already draw you can just style your pony a little.

Thanks, I thought about a horn if it should be visible. But my imagination went completely broken after 4 hours of fixing her head. My lineart was completely different and when I started shading it turned out perspective on head was tottaly fucked up.

>>

>shouldn't be switching tools
While this is true, It is best to have a repertoire of skills and tools so you are able to choose the best one for the job.
I used to work with 3D a lot and I used stuff like Photoshop, inkscape and even after effects just to put together the final image... The same works in the other way, for some of my 2D works I used 3Ds Max just to get some shapes or masks done in a specific way.
I believe Sai is an amazing tool for drawing, and PS is one of the best tools for post production and finalizing!

>>
>>29380331
Here's your (you) tax.

>>29380480
This. I into zbrush and sketchup for pretty complex stuff myself to save time. Having a few tools for the right job can go a long way and it's not much harder to learn. a lot of the hotkeys and layer functions are exactly the same but photoshop has much more to offer. And it has action hotkeys and tool presets which are a godsend for lazy fucks that are always looking for a way to shorten their workflow.

I haven't really drawn in over a decade but I've wanted to get back into it for some time now. My past workflow used to be drawing a sketch on paper, scanning it, then doing outlining and coloring in Flash. After that I'd add some rough shading in Photoshop. How should I work with the tools available today? I have a tablet, but I never used it before.

I've also tried Illustrator and hated it. I can't stand the pen tool.

Any suggestions?

I would asume, that if your stylus fell on the ground, you would've noticed that unless you have a carpet under your chair. so if you do, check the parallel dime... i mean under the table. Depending on how you store your tablet and stylus, you might have just pushed it far away on the table that it fell down or deep inside the drawer, under some other object?
I doubt you would walk away from the table with your stylus still in hand, unless it's somehow capable with your phone/tablet device?

Also I just remembered pic related noir episode while thinking and I'm probably going to try to draw rara with that coat and hat next...

thanks for loosing your stylus I guess!

I also have a Cintiq 12WX but I'm missing a cord for it :T But trust me as soon as I get it I'm using it on you guys.

I just tested if my toshiba encore can handle intous and sai. It turns out it can. But it's really funny to draw on it because intous workspace is almost the same as size of tablets screen.
But still good for some doodles on the run. Now I can take my small stuff wherever I want!

Not to be "that guy," but the placement of the cutie mark is bugging me. On all fours, the question mark would be horizontal. Also, it would appear moreso on the thigh, rather than the flank.

Tl;Dr, cutie mark is fudged.
>>
>>29388258
I hope you will have nothing to redline on my next drawing. Huh... that would be a huge achievement for me.
>>
>>29370615
I have a suggestion that may be of use to you, anon. I know I'm late on the draw, but have you tried playing around with drawing the negative space of your reference pictures? I feel like it could help with your proportions. For example, rather than draw the pony, draw the space between the torso, wings and such. Instead of going for shapes, you'll be focusing on how things should be shaped and spaced.

This one, I like. I find it flows a lot more naturally, and 'dem lines, Senpai. Your legs are still a bit thin. Real horses have long, thin, powerful legs. Our lovely ponies have adorable, chubby nubs. Same with her face. It's great to see some expression (almost as though she's about to step on a bug!), but below the chin should be rounder. Also, I like the flow you have with the tail, but it could be a bit more full (particularly on the inside, between the tail and the rump). See how in the reference picture, there's a little less negative space in there? All around, you're really improving and I look forward to seeing your drawings!

I gotta say, I'm diggin' your CAN-DO attitude over there.
> hair needs a bit more mass. I know the reference doesn't have much but a bad reference isn't a good excuse (usually)
> muzzle is too square; the forehead and jaw should be rounder
> the left arm and leg (the ones reaching out, closest to us) are both too thin
> the back-leg, furthest from us, is too close to the viewer, making it look like she's trying to hold pee in
> the arm further from us is the right shape but it's not far enough away from TS's torso - if that makes sense?
> the neck's a bit long and the torso's a litle too long
> the eye looks great
> tail is great but should be slightly higher on the butt; the tail is attatched to the spine
Okay but I want you to know you're doing really well, especially coming from pic related to how you are now. Very good job

>>
>>29392314
Someone placed spine in the middle of neck. WHAT!?
>>
>>29391769
Legs are looking a lot more solid now.

>Belly is still a bit thin, making the legs look extra long
>Back leg shape is too smooth. Normally at the ankle joint the back outline should have that little "corner" shape and the front should curve forward to almost a 45 degree angle (making room for the knee). Check some references for details.
>Pupils are too big, and look kind of square due to that 3px straight diagonal edge. Experiment with more combinations of pupil/iris/eye/eyelash shape until you find one that looks better.
>Tail on the side view looks kind of flat, due to the way it hangs straight vertically.

>>29392295
By the way, is there a reason you don't do pixel art? Advice on proportions and such could still be pretty useful, even if some of it is hard to apply due to size/palette limitations.

No one else mentioned it but the head is way too far back on her neck. Like you have to "cut" her sphere off and bring it further forward on her neck... stick (which is also a little too thick)

What is her left arm doing? Also her head behind her ears is too square and her ponytail looks like someone pushed it in a bit too much and it stuck? Oh and you should draw things closer to the viewer with thicker/darker lines.

this is not final lineart. I just do very clean sketches. I am crazy guy. Lines will be fixed.
Her left arm is leaning on the wall. I am sure I did it right. I is just covered now.

Also hairs and head are fixed now so it doesn't look flat. I am trying to understand some things I do completely randomly.
>>
>>29396555
Well no wonder your pose looks odd, you're using a STALLION pose for a MARE. Stallions are thicker every which way. She looks weird because her legs ARE too thick and long, her torso IS too thick and long, and the head is way too little :( You absolutely need to reference a mare pose for a male and vice versa.
>>29397288
BG is fine but her horn is too far down her face, her muzzle is too thick, and her glasses are way too foreshortened. I don't expect you to fix any of that though

Sure you could, it'd make my life easier; the only problem is that people get upset with you. I think the only reason people don't hate me for namefagging is that I do it to help them? I don't know, haha
