I loved it because it would have made perfect sense in S1. Faust's original design drew a lot from Tolkien, with Canterlot being the most prominent example.

I remember a fanfic where Glimmer was fucking with the timeline and a new timeline was created where Sunset never went to the human world, she became the element of magic, Twilight didn't get into the school her first try and had to retake the test, and the elements were some different ponies. It had Cheese Sandwich as Laughter, Rarity and AJ were the same, Dr. Whooves was Loyalty, Derpy as Kindness and Sunset as Element if Magic.
In it, Luna was rebanished instead of reformed, Sombra was reformed and married to Celestia, Sunset was ascended to Princess status with wings and everything and Twilight worked as a mage in Canterlot.

And those stories actually do the similarities properly by making them the forerunner culture of the ponies and most other species. It wasn't like that one shitty comic arc where they were just copying the aesthetic. And there are lots of cool little things in them too, like the Apple Family and how they use Celestia and Luna.

I will ride and die with those stories. They're my favorite fan content ever.

I deeply hate the idea, and I always have.

It can work if a setting is made to accommodate it from the start and the stakes are sufficiently high, or sufficiently far detached from the greater plot. Planescape: Torment (and to a lesser extent Planescape as a whole) and Disgaea series are examples where I think it works well from the top of my head. Disgaea spinoffs especially either sets you out on a small-scale quest far beneath the notice of Overlords (who might as well be incomprehensible Eldritch Abominations from your perspective) and the final boss is some lesser demon, or it's something like Makai Kingdom where the characters you interact with quite literally eat Gods for breakfast and decimate entire worlds by accidentally stumbling into them.


Pocket dimensions like the ones MLP:FiM has been directly dealing with thus far are also fine. Breezie realm, enchanted comic books and dream realm(s) as tangible locations, etc. are fine. Small, finite extensions of the "real" world can add a layer of mystique, storytelling or be interesting additions in their own right.


Alternate Universes that stand separate and mirror the entirety or large parts of the "real" world I really dislike, though. It's probably rooted in superhero comic books I read as a kid, but extends well into MLP. I fundamentally dislike both Equestria Girls and Reflections comic book arc.
Unlike the examples I mentioned I'm okay with, these alternative universe strike me as lazy rehashes of the original one, with little more than a single gimmick or twist to their credit most of the time. Worst of all is the threat they pose to integrity of the original setting (world), and how they fundamentally undermine every meaningful struggle. With this added extended universe stuff to the canon, Celestia is no longer *the* princess of Equestria, she is *a* princess of *an* Equestria, Discord and Tirek didn't threaten *the* world, they threatened *a* world, and so on.

I like AUs cause they're fun to think about, so long as they aren't about a campy snowflake OC.
