Good molds and sculptors are expensive, high quality materials are expensive (and often quite fragile) 90% of the toys are aimed at little girls who will, firstly, not particularly care about sculpt quality and, secondly, not exactly be gentle with them in the first place. Furthermore they have to take into account how much a parent, as opposed to a fan, is willing to pay for a single figure.

Most children can make-belief sticks and cardboard boxes to be just about anything.
Perhaps Hasbro figured that out and want margins to maximized? Skimping on design and production.

I don't know...I never thought MLP toys seemed "cheap" for what they are, they have always been quite nice in my opinion....not always entirely show accurate, but that isn't the issue in question

The thing is, it doesn't take much to make a decent MLP toy....they don't require many paint apps, heavy detail since it's all smooth basic molding, etc etc....i never understood people who said even the old style brushables were "bad", they were always quite good for the kind of toy they are, the plastic is thick and fine....the fake hair is even pretty decent

I remember I had KISS action figures with fake hair, now THAT was bad toy hair....and in the world of Hasbro, just take a look at recent Transformers which are wayyyyyyy cheaper feeling than any MLP toy, because they are much more expensive to produce so costs are cut heavily these days for various reasons, and have hardly any paint compared to toys from the 90s....MLP doesn't really actually suffer from any of these things
