I'm going to play devil's advocate for a sec here.

The fan comic may have better anatomy in some places and more details, but it's faces are all really flat/boring and completely miss the point of the original comic (I. E. The last panel has Glimmer looking worried rather than determined and confident.) Even when they do, the faces just don't seem animated which, for a comic book that's trying to be as bouncy and animated as possible, means it's falling at what it''s trying to do.

On the topic of anatomy, it does look more like the original show in terms of appearence, but it all looks stiff in the fan work, and there are a few moments like Glimmer's back legs in that first panel looking really short.

Now, this isn't to say that the original is good, far from it. I just mean they both have their ups and downs.

Yeah, the cartoonish, anatomically wrong version will have more dynamic, exaggerated expressions. The anatomically correct one doesn't have such freedom because the horses don't really emote that much, but their emotions are still carried clearly.
I don't agree on the stiffness, just because they don't stretch into cartoons while in movement doesn't mean there is no movement at all. Agreed on the back legs though, they should've probably been more stretched out.

The rest is just a matter of taste and preference and it would be nice if you'd formulate them as such instead of trying to present everything you say as the final verdict and truth.

The only figures the public sees are short-term sales in comic shops, which aren't the book's target market. IDW aims this comic at kids and fans of MLP, not fans of comics in general. This isn't unusual for MLP, though. Pretty much every comic that isn't from DC, Marvel or Image relies on sources outside of comic stores these days.

Fosgitt's faces show better emotion. Pencils' artwork is nice but it's TOO detailed. This is a comic book, NOT an illustration. Too many modern comics artists put way too much detail in a panel which then looks cluttered-up, especially after any word balloons are added. In Pencils' third panel, this is no need at all for the horizontal speed lines in the background -- the panel is a bit of a mess. Fosgitt's artwork focuses more on the characters' reactions and movements and not on the background.

Look, I think Fosgitt's artwork is far from perfect and he really has a hard time keeping on-model, but neither artist "wins" in this competition. The best solution to the page layout would have elements of BOTH artists.

Ok, going to point some shit out that you may not realize that thanks to fucked hands and years of no practice can no longer be backed up by showing.

1) ponies only have one model, you aren't remembering multiple figures, at most you are remembering multiple hair styles, and the way hair is made falls into the catagory of practice many artists do on the regular, so drawing it at varios angles should not be hard. once you are on model and have drawn hundreds of the same model, it gets VERY easy to draw it again.

2) what would take forever with drawing is coming up with the idea, planning it out, but most of the leg work there is already done.

3) another aspect that takes fuckloads of time, is perspective, and while there is a fair amount in here, none of its perfect, if you just go for good enough its fairly fast work.

4) now I want you to zoom into the first panel and look at the background, and tell me how detailed you think it is., because to me, i see a bunch of procedurally made stones, the hatching that really if you ever did it doesn't take much time and a few bookshelves, note the stairs, I know this person draws at such a high resolution that if they did perfect perspective they would not be as wonky as they are

Basically, everything that takes time is already done for them, and they drew this with good enough perspective instead of perfect along with being based on models the person has been drawing hundreds if not thousands of times already and what little they don't (note the forced perspective of spikes arm being iffy,) is largely geometric shapes that any artist who gets good can pull out their ass at the drip of a dime.

I'm not saying this is proof of it only taking 4 hours, i'm just saying i wouldn't be shocked if it took less time then that. just because you are slow, you suck, and everyone you know sucks, doesn't mean everyone is. I got humbled daily due to a friend I use to draw with who could pull out amazing shit fast.

Its literally about who you know not how talented you are. Back when I was still in practice I always wondered what in the fuck these people are employed for, it took years later to find out why.

1) you are a known name and your name sells shit on its own.
2) you have friends in high places who will get you work regardless of skill.
3) they are fast and easy to work with

you can go to deviantart and find a plethora of amateurs who are better then professionals, but they never got the chance, they take to long, are hard to work with, are unknown quantities, and in the worst cases, are just unlucky.

Im most familiar with concept art, or at least the working conditions there, you are given a task and you may have at best a day to come up with 20-40 different concepts of largely the same thing, or maybe you were given an hour to get the feel of a scene done, and they didn't like it, asked for changes and want their suggestions implemented in 10 minutes.

Some places will take chances on new hires, some will grap people from schools that they know will ride your ass worse than a job, but lately they circle jerk and only pick people who are already established because they know they are able to work under those conditions.

I like Pencils's art a lot and this thread is convincing me that he's based, especially with shit like >>29204981

But I think the writing of Anon's Pie Adventure has gotten steadily worse with time. Since it's the only example of his writing I have, it doesn't give me faith.

But, I still really like his show-accurate style.

I dunno. It's like if he were animating Dr. Seuss and they took a snap shot from a fast tween frame. Like one of those single smear frames where the character is supposed to be moving really fast, except I can't tell where these animals are moving too because the smear is completely random.

Pic related. You can tell the direction of the motion during the tween here, but in Fogitt's comic I have no idea where that giraffe is going.

Here's another smear frame. Looks kind of similar to Fogitt's comics, no? It's really weird. It's like he's trying to give his characters a sense of motion, but the way I've been taught is that in a comic, you usually want to draw a motion at its completion or apex if it's going to be a still image, so you see the results of the motion. In animation, it would be a key that you draw in the comic. But Fosgitt draws his comic in fast, rubber, cartoon tweens.

Loony Toons break bones constantly during MOTION. Motion being the operating aspect of the thing. Loony Toons never held a shot on a character breaking their arm or leg to complete a movement.

Fosgitt's covers are consistently better than his godawful interiors. It's obvious he can't put the required time into his issues to reach the same quality as his covers, they probably don't pay him much either. With the sales declining he's probably the corner that they cut to keep up with the schedule.
