long ago in my head cannon before S3, I figured Alicorns where the only pony race, combined of current day all 3 races. Then Discord came, and with his crazy chaotic magic sort of changed the Alicorn race, leaving many horn and wingless and others missing only their horn or wings, before Sun butt and Moon butt stopped him.

Due to this the current Alicorn utopia collapsed and Equuis entered a long dark age. Eventually pony kind that survived this collapse would find its way to Equestria and refounded it a society there, either on the current ruins of forgotten Alicorn society, or those ruins had long been claimed by nature and are gone from sight. Likely the latter from what I remember of the early lore.
