Help

I can't understand where you're supposed to draw pony arms from. Sometimes they're stemming from the bottom of the upperbody (left 2 images)

But once they start lifting their arms all consistency is off. I don't know what to do. I'm trying to draw a pony lying on her back, but I don't know where to begin the shoulders

This is why you have to use your perceptions and knowledge. This is why you study actual horses.

SAI is the best drawing and lineart program. But it doesn't have anywhere near the flexibility and options for painting that Krita gives you. Case in point: Krita has about 80 blending modes. I especially find Geometric Mean and Greater blending modes useful (as painting blending modes, not layer blending modes) in many painting situations and I don't think other programs have them.

Transform masks also really help with painting repetitive scenes, like vegetation or the old castle in S1E2 from certain perspectives.

Don't even get me started on how much power and flexibility Krita's brush engines have. (it's a lot)

They're both pretty good I guess. But SAI is less powerful and not free.

Think of the anatomy and how it works in perspective. The scapula "wraps' around the back of the form of the body and they begin to make up the forelegs as they come down. You don't have to memorize every bone but at least note the major bone structures. Head, spine, scapula(shoulder blades), ribs, and the pelvic girdle (hips).

Can someone be nice enough to recommend a very simple image editing program, preferably free or shareware?

Coming from someone who has only used MS Paint and nothing else. I once used Helicon Filter and am familiar with Irfranview, Paint.NET and GIMP but not sure which to download. I'm only interested in editing.

Well, it's great for editing images and touching up (i.e. what it is meant to do). For digital illustration you're much better off with Krita, or Clip Studio Paint if you for some reason don't enjoy free software.
SAI is also a popular software for digital illustration, but it's very outdated at this point.

Just learn how to draw one line And make sure you're making use of your shoulder and elbow. It's a natural pivot which should make it easy.
