In Saudi Arabia, a full burka that conceals the face itself is mandatory of all women, women are not allowed to be outside without the company of a guardian male, and are not allowed to drive cars. It is a surreally misogynistic culture.

If the ponies were humans instead of ponies, the cartoon would be banned because it depicts strong independent females with uncovered faces. Some episodes are still censored due to their message but because it is ponies, it slips under the radar, and its feminist message can get through to the young girls in one of the most prohibitively misogynistic cultures in the world.

You can persuasively argue the merit of the show vis the feminist message combined with the fact that it is ponies instead of humans.
