Until season 4, I went through a few different favorites, and would post in their threads and collect pictures of them just fine, but didn't really love anyone in that way. I'd guess it was around when Somepony to Watch Over Me aired that something clicked and, despite not liking Apple Bloom very much before that season, got really into her, and it progressed to a point where I realized I was in love. I usually have some skepticism over that "you can't choose a waifu; she chooses you" idea, but I think there's at least some truth to it. You shouldn't force it at random, but there's nothing wrong with pushing it a little, if you're very interested but not absolutely crazy about them yet. Not everyone can just fall in love at first sight.

As for why that episode made me start liking her so much, it started with all the cute things she did while excited to stay home alone, really feel-good. The thought that she really was growing up and not just forever a young child, the developing voice, the unique feeling I felt when she was in danger. Then season 5 came and put focus on traits of hers that I really adore, like when she got so anxious in Bloom and Gloom over her friends and family and sense of self, and when she easily understood and helped Troubleshoes, and understood Maud, too. There's not one portrayal of hers in season 5 that I didn't love; it really captured what I like about her.

If you've never felt something very unique and strong for a pony yet, I'd say that you're better off exploring anime or vidya, but it did take me until season 4, so maybe season 7 could put focus on a character's traits that you find especially attractive.

I didn't choose her, it just happened, I didn't like her at first, then I started liking her more and more and some time later there was a moment when I realized that I was thinking of her all the time. It's really nice, just watching a pic where she's smiling makes me happy, so I wouldn't change if for anything. But I think you shouldn't "force" it, people have different tastes and maybe you're not supposed to have a waifu.

I once thought as you did, Anon. Hell, I didn't even /want/ a waifu. However, as a writer, I learned to become more infatuated with the characters I write. When I started working on a green involving Twilight, I felt strange. Real strange. I thought about her a lot, I grew jealous of my interpretation of Anon I wrote who loved her back...and I legit fell in love with this character. Twilight is one of the most refined characters--or was. She's capable of having many, many stories to be held on her own, whereas other characters, whilst also developed, remain limited to what can be done with/to them.

Twilight was special--is special--to me because I understand what she's come from. I, of course, see myself in her, but when I took the time to dissect her, I was fascinated. She's been pretty well-off her entire life, never needing friends, just her studies, her intelligence, and she'd be fine. She's Bruce Wayne, guided by a mission to gain knowledge for the better of the world, her young sidekick, Spike, serving as her Robin and Alfred. Twilight, however, then realizes that there's this entirely different world she never knew about, but is forced into when she is sent to Ponyville. She discovers friendship--something she rarely paid attention to--and realizes it's potential. Thus, like any scientist or scholar upon a new discovery, they submerge themselves into finding more about it. She always tries her hardest, not because she has to, but because her heart tells her too.

If you're a writer, OP, I recommend you try writing out certain ponies.

Since S1 E1 her bubbly joyful and outgoing personality immediately drew me to her
Her jokes have always been hysterical to me or at the least made me smile like an idiot
Not to mention her songs have been amazing and Pinkie's Present is easily my favourite song from the show because it embodies everything Pinkie Pie is as a character
Which I believe has had some of the biggest growth in the show, in Pinkie Pride when she learnt that she doesn't always have to be the one making her friends laugh but simply ensuring they enjoy themselves and accepting it was one of my favourite moments in the show

A character as depicted in fanon is still a character. I would guess they have a primary version written by their favorite author/favorite fanfic to represent their waifu's character, possibly borrowing bits from other renditions.

In the end a waifu is an idealized concept, or as close as one can come, to the individual. It makes no difference where it comes from as anyone who has one will build the character up in their imagination to waifu status. Those of us that waifu more established characters only have more groundwork already laid out.

If you're very concerned with how your waifu's character is treated, you're going to have a hard time anyway, unless you waifu a one-shot. Because writers for the show have different ideas of the characters and who they are, and some have no respect at all for them and will use them as a shallow plot piece, maybe just to antagonize the protagonist. Worshiping canon too much, when it comes to waifu stuff, is a bad idea, in my opinion. Sure you can find a way to rationalize bad, OOC behavior caused by uncaring writers, but you shouldn't have to, if the her who you adore most wouldn't do those things that need justification.

Alright OP, I've worked myself up to talking about my waifu but I'll keep it brief since I'm the sort to keep my closest personal feelings to myself.

I love Trixie's outward confidence, style, and drive really. Her whole personality feels wonderful to me, even the negative aspects of it that come with the positives. I've also loved magic shows since I was a kid, as silly as that sounds, and I feel like I can relate to her buried insecurities. At some point along the way she became incredibly hot and I can't exactly place what it is. Sorry if that's not terribly concise.

I was never very good at putting feelings into words, but I'll try.

I can be a very introverted person at times, a lot of people dont bother talking to me, or wanting anything to do with me. That's not to say I dont have friends, but not many.
Pinkie seems like the kind of pony to try and help me come out of my shell, she wants to see everyone happy, and she wants to be friends with everyone, always seeing the best in everyone. Whenever I see her bouncing across the screen, smiling and having fun, it just puts a massive grin on my face.
But looking past the happy, fun side of her, she's really good at reading emotions and knowing how to cheer people up, and she really does try to make everyone happy, even when it comes at a cost to her, and seeing her sacrifice her happiness to see others happy is very admirable in my eyes.
Pinkie has her insecurities and problems, and I just want to help her through life like she helps me, I want to be there for Pinkie when the parties over and everyone's gone home, and cuddle up to her in the shared warmth of the bed after a long day. I want to wake up next to her, and see that smile on her face each morning as I hold her in my arms.
There's also the more sentimental reasons, I don't want to go into too much detail, but I've had a lot of failed friendships, and Pinkie's ambition to be everyones friend really resonates with me, seeing her in party of one hit me right in the feels because I'd been in the exact same scenario.
