It's such a shame that these are the most disgusting looking, with their schemes clashing cutie marks anyone could have thought up. I was happy like you OP, but as time passes every time I see these abominations I just get angrier at how unbelievably shit they look.

I get the symbolism behind them (this is designed for second graders, after all) as the whole concept of "joining of individual strengths for a common goal," but I view it as betraying the main concept of "your individuality makes you special" that the show seems to drive home.

Although I was pissed about twilicorn, and she grew on me, maybe this will too.

At least theres no more big changes coming in the rest of season 5 and 6, so I can relax and just enjoy the show.

I suggest finishing the season and treating that as the end, unless the movie takes place before season 6. The crusaders, especially Apple Bloom, were still great for the remainder of season 5 after this episode. If you're content with that ending, I really think you should consider not watching season 6.

But this is a very rare and unusual occurrence that even confuses Twilight. It's some crazy romantic destiny stuff that shows how special they are. Though they really could have accomplished a similar bond and feeling by just letting them get their marks at the same time, like the mane 6 did..
