The writers need to step up there game and we need to accept it's not that good and was never that good in the first place
Being critical is not a problim if we have legit critiques but we must remember a show about coloured ponys will not kill us if they make a bad episode

The second one. The bitches.
>>28700348
Both.
I know I'm more critical of the show now than I was back in seasons 1 and 2. I also know it's given me reason to be. What with the stronger emphasis on continuity nowadays, it's no surprise that any disappointing story is remembered more strongly than it would be in a purely episodic series. If MLP is going to try to take more ambitious steps like introducing new main characters and reforming long-standing villains, then the writers should know they have to handle those decisions carefully. It's easy to ignore a bad episode like The Cart Before The Ponies or Princess Spike because the effects don't last. Mistakes like Glimmer's backstory and the transformation of the changelings are different. You can't take those back, and making up for them is a lot harder. The last thing you want is for your audience to notice a pattern where you get the same thing wrong over and over again, and I think that's what happened in season 6.

They did that on purpose, right? Like ironically?

>>28700348
Ever since the beginning of S3 when the show stared to shift, people have been getting more and more critical towards it. I don't like having my expectation too high, but fan reaction was extremely annoying and too critical back thenlike people currently are with Josh Haberit was almost as I couldn't say I like an episode such as Power Ponies without people calling me a faggot for liking it.I was a little too sensitive back then but I will admit I was being a faggot myself. reality checkcompared to how it is now, it's more tolerable.
I don't think the show is getting bad to the point I want to drop it, But there are some writers I wish never stepped foot on MLP because they always made bad episodes.
>>28701034
Is Dave Rapp one of them?
>>28701034

>>28700348
This is the same shit people said in Season 3. It was only when the show rallied in S4 & 5 that these people were able to admit that yes, actually, S3 was weaker. They just go into a defensive crouch.
I'm sure Seth can tell from his view count that the show doesn't command the interest it once did.
>>28701474
Dave Rapp is indeed one of 'em.
>>28701577
Oh, I can't wait to see that same reaction when we get new writers for S7. I don't need to add salt because you guys will provide it for me, Mr. dubs.
>>28701941
This. There's still good episodes here and there, but writing quality has dropped a bit overall. One of the same problems is still there, though. Cramming everything into a 22 minute episode that is wrapped up in the last 3 minutes and feels edited for time is still there. My guess is they're being pushed more by Hasbro to do certain things, like add the alicorn baby, which they did after three years.

>>28701941
Eh I'll admit that Season 3 and season 6 were comparably a step down from what proceeded them. The trouble is it's hard to discuss this without drawing out people that go "Oh well the series spontaneously became shit everyone is just realizing it now" or think that one less then stellar season means that it's all over. The show recovered from season 3 and I feel like that season was way worse then 6, although I really like Starlight and I feel like half the good episodes this season featured her so if you can't stand her there's not much left. A lot of the veteran writers on the staff have either moved on to other MLP projects or have left altogether so a lot of this season was dedicated to both establishing new writers and establishing the most major change to the main cast since Twilicorn. Despite everything I still had a decent chunk of episodes that I really like so I'll live.

Little of column A, a little of column B.
People in the fandom (especially the people on /mlp/) HAVE been getting very critical of recent seasons due to how much things have changed in the last couple.
HOWEVER, there has been some shaky writing in Season 6, which can be directly attributed to just how many key writers left between Season 5 and Season 6. Having Haber in charge for the season certainly hasn't helped either.
So yeah, it's a little of both. Things have been kinda shaky recently but people are over-reacting about it and getting overly critical with even good and decent episodes in the season.

>>28700348
We are critizing a show not meant to have continuity. Faust may have made a playbox for kids but that's all she did.
Why do the cows talk? What are the limits of Pinkie sense? How does plant life continue under NMM's eternal night? How can Equestria deal with villains without having the EoH for a thousand years with no military? Why does Equestria's gem economy make no sense? What makes a train move? What can Equestrian magic do and not do? How is magic classified? Will time alternating lead to stable time loops, or can it with effort lead to alternate universes?
Throw all those questions out of the door, because it's never going to make sense.
If you read the article (which I have and half of you obviously haven't) you would realize that "Go directly to Bed, Do not collect $200" Seth is right on one thing. The strength of the show is in its character interactions. And while it sucks that we don't see the m6 all together like we did before, it's better for the longevity of the show that we split them up into teams to tackle problems. It keeps the writers from having to flanderize a character due to lack of time/too much effort put in other characters.
These ponies still generally behave the same (with a few exceptions, but they tend to snap back under a new director or a rebel writer) year after year. There hasn't been an outright character assassination and I consider that due in part to Faust's show bible.
Someone should steal it so we can make our own MLP. With blackjack and whores.

>>28700348
>The writers are the problem or we are just fucking entitled bitches?
Neither.
The problem is simple. The show turned into a sitcom where most of the stuff people loved about the show as the character development, which is a big NO-NO in sitcoms.
Sitcom writers/episodes in on themselves are not bad (Larson is a guy who cherished the idea, so does Haber) but when all of the episodes come down to "What else could they do" instead of "well, we want to show this side of them" or "She wants to be X, let's show some of her adventures towards achieving it."
What does Twilight currently want?
Ummmm....
What does Rarity want?
NEET-it-up, I guess? She's famous, rich and has nothing to do but live on purposelessly.
What does Rainbow Dash want?
She achieved her dream *slow clap*. It meant nothing in the grand scheme of things because sitcom.
On a positive note, it's also why the movie is going to be awesome.
Because you cannot lack these things in a movie's story so we'll get some more of it.
Both. Neither.
I think there are a lot of ways the show and writers have improved since the early days. I think that when an episode is good, it's really good. The highs are higher, and in my opinion the lows are not lower. The lows stayed about the same. The problem is we've seen what the show can be at its best, so why isn't at its best all the time?
At the end of the day I think the writers are afraid to take the mane 6 in any new directions, and they really should switch to some sort of longer narrative arc structures to keep the show interesting while still focusing on the same cast. Basically, if I had a choice, I would do away with the sitcom nature of show that >>28710966 mentioned.
Just to continue to piggy-back off that other anon, most of the mane 6 don't really want anything anymore. They've all accomplished their dreams. Twilight has succeeded as a teacher. This has always been the problem with Applejack. From pretty much the start of the series she has had everything she ever wanted. Now, it wouldn't be that hard to give Applejack some new motivation, but the writers won't do it.
Imagine if, in the middle of this idyllic time where all the characters have everything they want, the fire nation attacked. It'd change the whole dynamic of the show. Maybe Rainbow Dash would be desperate to prove herself again. Maybe Applejack would be eager to enlist to fight for her family. Maybe Twilight would want to fight for her nation. Maybe Rarity would want to...um...upbruptly switch careers and become a detective in the corrupt, mob-controlled manehattan. Maybe these are all terrible fanfic ideas. But the writers need to do something to change the current dynamic of the show. The characters are quickly going from being dynamic to being static, whereas at least in the earlier stuff they'd change at least a little bit.
>>28711120
I don't know about the shake-up of characters.
After all, Fluttershy finally got to a good point this season with her development.
Yet still, Starlight is a perfect example of how you do this without touching the mane 6.
She's a new charcater that is being developed and actually has goals and a story arc of her own.
Coincidentally, her episodes are always the best (except the S5 finale but that wasn't even about her).
Ditto for the story arc with Luna and CMC's dreams, all great episodes because of expanding the respective characters.
I think it would be for the best to replace the main cast entirely but that would make the whole house go crazy.
We'll see what they've come up with for the movie.
Though I think it is pretty much your "Fire Nation attack" with some villain conquering Ponyville/Equestria and them fleeing to some other kingdom to find help.

>when all of the episodes come down to "What else could they do"
This is why I didn't like Power Ponies and similar episodes. They're recycles of the same generic plots every other cartoon does. The show has a great setting and characters with at least a smidge of depth, but the writers would rather go down the same cartoon plot checklist and move on to the next.
>>28711397
How would you communicate something like that to the writing staff? Especially since a lot of these episodes tend to be very popular (A Hearth's Warming Tail).
>>28700348
Seeing Seth damage control for the show's plummeting popularity and quality and his userbase make excuses is one of the last good things to come out of this fandom.
>>28711397
>Power Ponies
>>28711520
>A Hearth's Warming Tail
Maybe these episodes aren't popular because they recycle generic plots, maybe they're popular despite it. I mean, these episodes are episodes where all the ponies had a role. Maybe that's what people like. I know that's what I like. And I think it can be used easily, even without moving to different scenarios like in Power Ponies or AHWT.
The Saddle Row Review and Newbie Dash were about Rarity and Rainbow Dash's goals. I think it was much more enjoyable an episode like TSSR, where all the ponies had a prominent role supporting Rarity, than ND, where the episode was just about Dash, and her friends were merely background characters barely relevant to the plot.
