5/10 for the first part, points for an interesting cast of characters and some good humor but the plot feels like yet another retread for the threat level.

After she made friends she tries to change.

Is Starlight a Mary Sue?

Everyone loves her and constantly praises her. She is friends the main character and all of her recurring background pony friends. She is all powerful and her magic skills are on par with Twilight.

The one thing I truly didn't like was how everyone was treating Glimmer like she changed. She had very little screen time for anyone to believe that, and unless you ignore the first half of No Second Prances, Glimmer as failed every friendship lesson that she was being taught.

Will the writers EVER stop making Starlight obsess with her past? Every single episode she's in, she brings it up. Every episode, someone gives her a pep talk and tells her everything's fine now. It's so tired and overdone at this point.

Starlight is a lot like Fluttershy. She keeps overcoming her problem only to have it present itself the next fucking episode she's in. Maybe by Season 8 she'll actually make some kind of progress.

When did Starlight ever overcome her problem? Saying she is overused is fine but she has not come anywhere close to resolving all of her problems.

Starlight isn't like Twilight who just ignored friendship. Starlight outright despised it and lived her life according to a view that is pretty much the exact opposite of everything she is being taught now. Her entire life collapsed on itself and everything she is told is a reminder that she did something wrong in the past.

Twilight should start by realizing that Starlight has no foundation to take in Twilight's lessons and apply them properly. What is standard behavior to one person is only what was normalized in their environment.

Starlight lived in a different world. That is her character and it is clear in the episodes where Twilight is teaching her that Twiggles has not picked up on how off base Starlight is in approaching friendship. It make sense for both of them yet people are acting like Starlight should immediately know right from wrong.

You can't compare being a good friend to not being shy, the latter is far more cut and dry than the former.

Fluttershy is shown struggling with not being shy because she is not good at being shy. Starlight is shown struggling with being friendly because she does not know what being a good friend is.

That distinction is what I'm trying to make clear. Starlight does not understand what friendship is which is what makes most of her episode lessons futile. Her most recent episode didn't end with the impression that Starlight now understands friendship, she still came off as very naive and still of a warped view on friendship. That's different from Fluttershy being shy only because that's her natural disposition.

Personally I really like where they've taken the show in recent years, I'm really enjoying watching it. I seen it just now, heres good things and bad things about the Part 1.

Good things

+ No songs
+ Twiligtht and friends are actually princesses in distress this time
+ Discord
+ Trixie

bad things

- pacing
- 80% of episodes invested into Starlight's angst over her misdeeds even though she should be fine with her frineds from the TOWN already
- Celestia and Luna once again useless and defeated (and second time by Chrysalis!)

- boring dialogues and unfunny jokes


Two parter as a whole is 6/10 so far but lets see if it improve tomorrow.
