S6 E16: Other Than Me
Ponyville residents are beset by a changeling named Anon who cannot figure out who he is. Confusion really starts when on being told Changelings are bad he begins adopting the traits of those telling him he's evil in order to improve himself until his impersonations begin to resemble mockery. Starlight Glimmer teaches him that one doesn't have to be like everyone else to be good and he decides just to be himself, whoever that might be.

Sunset returns to make amends with Celestia but runs into Starlight. They talk about all that they have in common and leads to Shimmer giving a speech to Glimmer on what she's learned about friendship, redemption and making up for your past.

Anyway, I'd love to have another Rarity/RD episode like Rarity Investigates. It's really a duo that almost never interacts with each other, and yet they were adorable and played off each other so well in that ep. Certainly beats the hell out of the shitty AJ/Rarara combo.

You're right. There's nothing objectively very wrong with it, really, and it's mostly my neurotic way of thinking and fear of shipping that hurts my enjoyment. I try to get over that when I re-watch it, so I can enjoy it as much as I know I should, but it would have been nice if I didn't have to do that at all and could just fully enjoy the cute filly episode as soon as it first came out as I normally would, without any such dwelling and anxiety.
If he was a girl, I'm sure it would easily be in my top 5 favorite episodes.

On the subject of re-doing the episode, while I understand the meaningfulness of her having reassurance of the value of her role in life through helping a stranger, I think it could have been accomplished just as well through Diamond Tiara noticing her being down and alone in the cooking class, approaching her, and cheering her up by telling her about how much her life has improved because of the CMC, and letting it be known that they really are friends now. Adding in another conflict wasn't bad, but it wasn't necessary, either.
